Stavanger, Norway

What an incredible time it has been in Stavanger. I don't really know what I expected when I left Calgary last September but the time in Norway, the travelling we have done and most of all the friends we have made makes it really hard to say goodbye.It has been such a great opportunity to live in another city and experience another culture and language. We will have lots of stories to smile and laugh about for many years to come.On Friday evening we had a farewell party with most of our friends here. It was lots of fun and we received wonderful gifts...Norwegain cookbook, Stavanger Oilers sweater, and a scrapbook detailing our year here.Kevin and I have so many memories from this past year and hope that you have enjoyed reading about them on the travelblog.See you soon!Kathy

Today was my last work day in Stavanger. The time has gone by so quickly and I can't believe that I will soon be leaving this place. It seems unreal.This morning on the drive to work I was thinking that it would be the last time I drove to the office...all day I have been thinking things like that at lunch, at the coffee station, etc. Work was definitely busy this year but I did get some great work experience and got to work on some interesting projects. However, the best part of work was definitely the people that I worked with.I never thought that I would feel so sad to leave work. I don't remember feeling this way when I left Calgary but I guess it was because I knew that I would be coming back. It was really hard to say goodbye to everyone at work.

Since it is my final week in Stavanger before moving home, I am starting to think about what will change and what I will miss. One of the things that I will miss is the gym that I belong to. The SportsClub...now Elixia in the centre of town is great. They offer numerous classes in the evenings - some nights I have up to nine classes to choose from. My faves are Step Kronsj, Pump Kronsj and Spinning 3. In fact I enjoy the classes so much that I haven't even been upstairs to the cardio machines in probably three months. The selection just won't be the same when I am back in Calgary!At first it was strange having all the instructions and cues in Norwegian, but now I am so used to them that I could probably teach some of the classes (fire, tre, to, en...kom igjen!) Once I do find a gym in Calgary it will be strange to be able to understand every word that the instructor says.

Aberdeen, United Kingdom

Considering that both Kevin and I work in the oil industry, it is surprising that neither of us had ever visited Aberdeen before this past week. I had a course in Aberdeen, so Kevin and I decided to make a trip out of it and visit our friend Alex on the weekend. We were warned that Aberdeen is a very grey town. grey skies and grey granite buildings, but we were pleasantly surprised with a clear blue sky on Saturday. We had a great time on the weekend visiting with friends and spending time wondering around the shops on Union Street. On Sunday we visited the Maritime Museum which was surprisingly good, especially considering that the entrance was free. Two things that made the trip even better was Starbucks coffee and Aveda salons.During the week I was busy with my course and Kevin spent the days wondering around town and also made an overnight trip to Edinburgh to visit his cousin Maeve. In the evenings we met up with friends for dinner.After not being in an English speaking country since April, I found it strange to walk down the street and understand the conversations around me!

Vatlandsvag, Norway

We spent the past weekend in a hytte (cabin) in Vatlandsvag with friends from work. After a stormy drive on Friday afternoon and some trouble finding the cabin, we arrived at a gorgeous cabin on the fjord. The cabin was new and bright and was big enough to sleep 12 people. It was a very relaxing weekend - dinner and drinks on Friday night, trip around the fjord by boat on Saturday, movies and dinner in the evening, and then a trip home on Sunday. The cabin was great. I wish that I would have discovered this one sooner!

Milan, Italy

Another year and another trip to Italy to travel with my parents...we spent a few days in Cortona and then travelled by train to Milan for a few more days.  I met up with my parents in Cortona which is in the Tuscan region of Italy. They were just finishing up with their tour group, so I joined them for dinner and a cheese making seminar. It was so interesting to see how quickly the cheese could be made and I got to taste lots of delicious cheese over lunch. For the remainder of the time we had a relaxing few days in the apartment that they had rented, lots of good food and wine, and shopping trips up and down Via Nazionale. On Sunday we took the train from Cortona to Milan. In Milan we continued to have good food and wine...we even managed to find a restaurant that was recommended to my parents by the owner of an Italian restaurant in Edmonton. On Monday we had planned to shop, but lots of the stores were closed Monday morning. We walked around Corso Buenos Aires and then went to see the Duomo and the original Galleria with all of the designer shops.  The time went by quickly and before I knew it, it was time to travel back to Norway.

Kevin and I made a trip to Ikea this weekend. Since it was a Saturday it was very busy at Ikea and it was difficult to find a parking place...similar to Edmonton or Calgary! It is kind of strange to visit an Ikea in a foreign country because the layout, products, and product names are similar from one country to the next. Once you are inside, you could be anywhere in the world! We had a quick lunch of meatballs and potatoes, I discovered that Champagne Brus tastes exactly like Cream Soda, and we did some shopping. After all this time in Norway, I can now pronounce the furniture names correctly.Maybe when I am back in Canada I will have to go to Ikea to reminisce about Norway...

Another year, another Canadian Thanksgiving in Norway. This year it was much easier to prepare the dinner as I knew which stores to go to for ingredients.It was my first time cooking a turkey and I was surprised at how much bigger a turkey is than the chickens I usually cook. There wasn't much choice for turkey in Stavanger...so I ended up cooking a 15 lb bird for 5 people!The turkey was too large for any of the pans I have in the apartment, so I had to use a broilder pan and a special Oven Roasting bag (thanks Becki!) It was fun preparing the meal of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, peas & carrots, and gravy. However, it did get a little hectic at the end when I had to take the turkey out of the oven, mash the potatoes, and make gravy and then I forgot to heat the rest of the stuffing in the oven. Everything did turn out and we had a delicious meal.
