Guanajuato, Mexico

Today was a great day in Guanajuato. It was a fascinating, picturesque, crooked, cobblestoned city. The streets are irregular in shape, creating a jumble of walls, balconies and rooftops meeting at anything but right angles- the churches are the exception. Founded in 1559 the town became fabulously rich and world famous with silver mining. From the 16th to 18th century the mines in this area produced 1/3 of the silver in the world. Great day!
San Antonio, Texas, United States

We left Guanajuato, and headed North- San Luis Potosi, for 1 night, and then back to
Ciudad Victoria for 1 night. Yesterday we headed for the US border-we crossed over, and drove 300 miles more to San Antonio, TX. Yesterday was a very long driving day- we started driving and saw lots of Mexican Army. We had a Mexican military checkpoint, and then we arrived at the border. We got pulled over at US customs and inspected. They opened all our cupboards, and checked us out. Everything was ok, and then we decided to drive to San Antonio to regroup. Today we were cleaning, and sorting things out. Our Mexican adventure has come to an end. We loved it! We met alot of nice people, and had - THE best trip we have ever had!! We really liked Oaxaca, Merida, San Miguel de Allende, and Guanajuato. We loved the vibrant and active communities where handicrafts were made- we enjoyed shopping, museums, churchs, ruins, and we learned a lot of Mexican history.
We would like to learn more of the language someday.
Robert & Kristi
Mexico City, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico

We are in exciting Mexico city. Actually outside in a pictureque town called Tepotzotlan. We did a city tour today & went to the wonderful Museum of Anthropology. It was a great museum . We didn't do the whole tour of the city,as there were protests in the country about fuel prices and Mexico's state owned PEMEX fuel. Yesterday we went to the pyramids of Teotihuuacan. The pyramids were built in the 1500's. It is the 3rd largest pyramid in the world. The 2nd is the Great pyramid @ Giza. We climbed the 243 stairs to the top of the pyramid of the sun( so did the 83 year old couple with us on the trip). February 21 we went to Taxco- the silver capital of Mexico. It was a cute town nestled in the mountains ( elevation 5000 ft) with lots of silver. It looked like a village in Italy. Tomorrow another busy day in Mexico City . We are at elevation about 6000 feet here and the nights have been down in the 40's.
Oaxaca, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico

Hi everyone
Sorry for no posting recently. We have not Had very good Internet- so I am posting on my phone. When we last posted we were in Cancun. Next we traveled to Chichen Itza one of the 7 wonders of the world. It was fabulous- it was large and very interesting. Next we traveled to Merida which is a very beautiful, clean city. After Merida we traveled back to the Gulf of Mexico to Campeche. We had a lovely camp site with lots of amenities. We laid around by the water and explored Campeche. Next we traveled inland to Villahermosa, home of the Olmec heads of Mesosmerica circa 2000 BC. We then traveled to Tehuantepec. It is the narrow patch of land between the Gulf & Pacific Ocean. It used to be the way things traveled from one body of water to the other before the Panama Canal. The road from one side to the other was very rough! We have been in Oaxaca for 2 days. We went to the city center today- it was very busy, bright, and vibrant. Yesterday we celebrated Robert's birthday here and had a great day. Oaxaca is the home of chocolate and mole sauce. We travel tomorrow morning- all for now. R & k
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Hi everyone-
It's been a while since we wrote anything. We broke away from the caravan, and
had a vacation within a vacation. We drove from Xpujil direct to Cancun. We skipped
Chetumal and Tulum. We drove to Cancun and parked our RV in the park everyone else would be coming to in a few days. We had exciting traffic/traffic circles in Cancun in the driving rain...it was interesting. After getting settled we drove around and went to dinner down in the hotel zone. I am glad we are not staying there. The next morning we drove to Playa del Carmen (42 miles) and got on the ferry to Cozumel. We went diving in Cozumel with a small dive operator- only Sandy, Johney, and one other guy from Germany with Robert & I diving. The diving was really good. Great visibility, and nice easy drift dives. We stayed in a small boutique hotel close to town. After diving on Monday we went to MARGARITAVILLE and had really "the best" margarita and huge nachos. We then walked all over town. The next morning we dove with the same people, plus an extra couple. We did 2 dives, then a 3rd after lunch- we were really hungry then so walked into town for a great Mexican/Seafood dinner. The next morning we left on the 8am ferry and Robert & Johney went to dive in the Cenotes. Cenotes are freshwater caves/caverns to dive in on the Yucatan. They said they were incredibly beautiful. Sandy and I had a leisurely day and had breakfast, and walked all over Playa del Carmen. It is called the city of "beautiful people". We shopped, and then sat in a beach bar for a couple of hours, and watched people, and had a couple of drinks. That night we met up with the "Trackers" -our group. They missed us, and we were glad to be back. Today 2/4 we took an different boat over to Isla de Mujures with the Trackers. We drove golf carts around the small island. We then laid on the wonderful beaches and got some sun. Tomorrow we leave for Chichen Itza-one of the 7 wonders of the world.
We are in the middle of the jungle-close to Guatamala. Yesterday we went to the ruins at Palenque. Ruins discovered in the 1800's it was excavated in the 1920's & 1930's. The sarcofagus of King Pakal (ruling period 700 AD) was dug up and a replica was on display. The original sarcofagus was replaced 4 stories below ground in the a pyramid structure. It was a large ruin- 50 templesbuildings uncovered- they have 3d mapped over 150 more.
Today we went on a drive to Agua Azul- blue water falls. It was very beautiful! We swam and sunbathed, and then had lunch and shopped. We are eating dinner "in" tonight. Tomorrow we leave for Xpuhil- a small ruin in the middle of the the country. We are having a great time- meeting people from all over the US & Canada. All size rigs- 3 fifth wheels, 2 small rigs and 10 motorhomes (34-45 feet). That's all for now- more later.
We went to breakfast in the city, and then walked around the town square and church. We bought cream for all of Robert's bugbites (chiggers) at the Farmacia downtown. We then went to San Juan de Ulua. A fort built by the Spaniards in the 1600's out of "coral". It was most recently used as a prison. It was used as the "fort" in the filming of "Romancing the Stone". We went out for a nice seafood/steak dinner down by the beach, and now to bed.
