Our next Pit Stop was Historic San Antonio, Texas.  To get there, we need to travel 400km south-west down Interstate 35.  Halfway to San Antonio, we detour to "Live Music Capital of the World", also the state capital of Texas, Austin.  We drove through the renown, 6th street to purchase some souvenirs.  Then we stop at the Capitol Building for photo ops.  Taller than the US Capitol, the Texas State Capitol and Capitol Grounds are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the capital of Texas and a favorite spot for the locals as well. We made another scheduled detour about 60km before reaching San Antonio.  As if our budget wasn't stretched far enough, this time we stopped at Tanger and Prime Factory Outlet Store (2 outlets in 1 place) at San Marco, Texas.  And as usual, Ling the magnificent bargain hunter, managed to get a couple of Coach handbags at dirt-cheap price.  What will I do without a shopping whizz like Ling. We had lunch at Cracker Barrel in Tanger; and yes!, you guess it, catfish again! Yum! Finally, with all distractions and temptations out of the way, we set our sight on making it to San Antonio without further ado.

Flight MH91 arrived in KLIA on the morning of the 11th July, 2007.  Remember right from the begining, on the word GO!, I told you about payback's being a BITCH!   It finally came to bite us on our behind.  We departed on the 9th but we arrived on the 11th.  That meant that we had lost 2 days of our life in the air, vanished, evaporated, dematerialized, gone, poof!  See what I meant!  Well, we couldn't be bothered if we had lost a month, we just wanted to get home to our beloved pups.  The longest journey for us seemed to be the 45minutes taxi ride back home from KLIA, so near yet so far.  The moment our taxi pulled up in front of our home, a continuous barrage of yelpping and barking could be heard even by the deaf.  We were so glad to be finally Home Sweet Home!..........................  For Nikki  ...........................

The flight from Dallas to Newark took about 3 hours.  We arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport with a couple of hours to spare before the next flight back to Malaysia via Arlanda Stockholm, Sweden.  We grabbed that opportunity to have a decent meal.  We ordered General Tso Chicken with white rice from a Chinese Fast Food stall at Terminal B in Newark Airport and was delighted that the meal was quite palatable.  We strolled around a little more until the boarding call for passenger travelling on MH91 came blaring out from loud speaker.  We dutifully proceeded to our gate for boarding.

We reached Dallas in the late afternoon,  sent the car for a proper car wash, and headed back to May's home.  Naturally, the first person we like to meet the most was baby Emma.  She was 12days old and we would like to see if she had grown over the past few days of her life, silly us.  To our surprise, Emma indeed had sort of solidified from her earlier fragile self.  She appeared to have grown in length; could it be that or was it just an illusion?  Hmmm!....must have been those salty air that I had been breathing in for the past eight days.  Ling finally have enough nerves to cradle Emma in her arms. Wade whipped up a mean Steak Dinner for us and it was superb.  After dinner, it's Show-and-Tell Time with mum and May.  We captured a little over 2000 snapshots throughout our escapade and it took quite awhile to plow through all of them. Nikki was not threatened at all with the arrival of a new baby, in fact she appeared to be protective over baby Emma.  I supposed, Nikki saw Emma as her fraternity sister.  The two would established a strong bond in time to come but the story had a bereft ending.(09-07-07)  DEPARTURE DAYAfter all the fun and joy that we had, it's was finally time for us to leave "The Land of the Free"; and go back to "The Home of the Depraved".  We thanked Wade for the fantastic time we had and I bid Nikki adieu.  She gave me  repetitious licks on my face as I picked her up for the last time.  It was a herculean effort on my part to finally put her down.  That was the last time I saw Nikki alive.  A few months later, I received the tragic news from May about Nikki's untimely passing.  We were all heartbroken to hear that news.  We wish Nikki a happy life in doggy's heaven. We had breakfast at a nearby shop with Emma making her debut to the public for the first time.  After a typical American breakfast, May sent us to Dallas Fort Worth Airport to catch an American Airline flight to Newark.  We bid mum, May and especially Emma farewell at the airport and got on the way.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Jamaica is an island nation of the Greater Antilles, 234 kilometres (145 mi) in length and as much as 80 kilometres (50 mi) in width situated in the Caribbean Sea.  Its indigenous Arawakan-speaking Taíno inhabitants named the island <i>Xaymaca, meaning the "Land of Wood and Water", or the "Land of Springs".The song, "Island in the Sun" kept playing in my mind as our ship approach Jamaica.  This place after all, was one of the very special place that I had always wanted to visit my whole life, but it's also a place that I thought would be impossible for me to see in this lifetime.  I'm finally going to set foot on a Caribbean Island, Yeow! Our cruise ship stopped over for 10hours.  So much to see but so little time.  The best known and most popular tourist attraction in Ocho Rios and all of Jamaica is the amazing "Dunn's River Falls".  Visitors can make the 600 feet climb from the base of the falls, hand-in-hand like a human daisy chain.  Our tour guide Trevor (Indian looking chap), was waiting for us with a hand held plaque with  "Island Marketing" (the company we booked our tour from online) stenciled on it.  He greeted us in perfect english, after all, Jamaica is still a Commonwealth Country.  He led us to a 20seater van parked a short distant away. There were about 12 people in it waiting already.  We make haste as soon as Trevor got behind the wheels.  The first thing Trevor lecture us about Jamaica is that, the people of Jamaica never have any Problems.........(followed by his attempt at deadpan humour).......only Situations.  He told us that their most famous export was Bob Marley and Harry Belafonte.  He even did a Bob Marley number for us in his Jamaican husky voice; "nooo... woman no cry..." he proclaimed. To get to Dunn's River Falls from Montego Bay, we have to travel 90km east on gravel roads to Ocho Rios.  Along the way, Trevor pointed out to us some resorts that famous movie stars like Eddie Murphy used to stay.  The landscape scenery seemed so familiar, just like back home.  There were goats roaming by the road side like those in rural town back home.  The houses were of similar design, mostly single storey.  The journey took 1½ hour. We immediately changed to our wet gear for the upcoming challenge, which was to climb up the cascading waterfalls.  We started from where the water meets the ocean, and slowly inch our way up, one step at a time, hands interlocking with the rest of the crowd like a string of beads.  It was a monumental task that required ultra care in where you plant your next step.  One wrong step and you will cause a domino effect on the people behind you.  Imagine a house of cards tumbling down a 600ft waterfall.  It was exciting and fun.  The water was cold but welcoming to the touch after a hot day's sun.  We rewarded ourselves with the best coffee in the world at the end of our climb, The Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, also known as JABLUM.  Blue Mountain coffee are noted for their mild flavor and lack of bitterness.  The beans are also used as the flavor base of Tia Maria coffee liqueur. On the way back to the port, Trevor stopped us at "The Ultimate Jerk Centre".  I was expecting to meet a bunch of idiotic Jamaican come swamping us with harebrained remarks but I was in for a pleasant surprise.  The Ultimate Jerk Centre was a luncheonette instead; and Jerk Pork and Jerk Chicken was their specialty.  We ordered a portion each of this noteworthy dish to go.  It taste very much like our nasi lemak (Rice soak and steam in coconut milk), and delicious to the last drop. Remember the movie "Cool Running". The one that told the story of the first Jamaican Olympic Bobsled team back in 1988?  Well, the actual bobsled that almost won them a medal,  had their sled not broken during their final run, was hung up high for all to see at the popular Jamaican Bobsled Cafe.  We manage to get a glimpse of the Fame Bobsled as we were making our way through the tourist filled street. Back at the port, we tipped Trevor and his aid in appreciation of their splendid service.  They bid us farewell with a rendition of  "Jamaican Farewell".  We sang along with them with sadness in our voice as we knew that we 'won't be back, for many a days'.  We did some souvenir shopping at the ship's terminal and board the ship again in the evening.  The Jamaica goverment had in place a grand send-off for us with a Uniform Band playing to us as our ship left the shores of Montego Bay.  "My heart is down, my head is turning around, I had to leave a little bit of me in Montego Bay...".

(01-07-07)  GALVESTON ISLAND - CARNIVAL CONQUEST TERMINALWet and warm, is how I would remember the morning of the 1st day of July.  Our spirits were dampened by the early morning precipitation.  The Island of Galveston is located 77km south of Houston and it is the homeport of two major cruise ship terminal, Carnival Conquest and The Royal Caribbean Cruise.  In order to get there from the mainland,  one have to drive across a 4km causeway that connects the mainland to Galveston.  Facing the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston is often exposed to the elements of destructive hurricanes and vicious storms.  Fortunately, Poseidon was not throwing his tantrum at that time of the year.  As we arrived at Galveston 2hrs ahead of our schedule boarding time,  we took that opportunity to drive around the island of Galveston.  The drive through Galveston Island enable us to unearth some of the island's best kept secret, their beautiful Victorian designed houses.  After a brief scenic tour of the island, we stop to have breakfast at Popeye. Finally, it was time for us to board the ship that's going to take us to the Caribbean, The Carnival Conquest.  I stood in awe, the 1st time I lay my eyes on the mammoth-sized ship.  It's 952ft from bow to stern and 114ft wide.The ship also features 13 passenger decks, housing four swimming pools - one with a 214ft long water slide - a 15,000ft² health and fitness facility, an internet cafe, four restaurants and a boulevard of shops and boutiques.Expanded family-friendly facilities will include action alley; a recreation centre housing a video arcade, teen coffee bar and dance club, along with a 3,300ft² children's play area.Other features aboard the Carnival Conquest include a conference centre, an expansive sports deck with basketball and volleyball courts, a jogging track and a full casino. Dining choices include twin two deck-high formal restaurants and an expansive two-level poolside eatery (offering casual alternatives for breakfast, lunch and dinner), a 24hr pizzeria and a variety of specialty areas. A reservations-only supper club, a patisserie, a sushi bar and complimentary 24hr room service are also available.I can go on and on but I rather let the following pictures tell you the rest. The moment we set foot on board, a live band welcomed us with an array of Calypso music.  Our cabin was the lowest of all at deck 1, which was just about the sea level.  To my surprised, the cabin was much more spacious than I had anticipated, with full amenities and a port hole.  So glad that we did not opt for the cheapest cabin available.  Next, we hit the buffet table while the ship was still in it's boarding process with zealous gluttony.  Curious to know more about the place that we were to call home for the next 7days, we went on a discovery trail and check out every nooks and cranny of the ship.  When the call came for everyone to gather on deck 4 for the safety briefing, we ran like headless chickens back to our cabin to grab our life vest as instructed by the PA system and then return to deck 4 for the mandatory procedure.  After all said and done, we finally set sail towards the blue yonder. Liquor Tasting was one of the many interesting things that was constantly happening on board the cruise. At the end of each day, fine dining at the Grand Dining Hall was a must.  Spectacular Gala Show to welcome all the guest was install for us, featuring Freddy, our cruise mascot. (02-07-07)  2nd DAY AT SEA2nd day was a picture perfect day at sea.  I remember the warm sun stroking my skin...the sound of the waves, and the gentle salty breeze in my nostrils.  The sea is of perfect tranquility and the water,...oh the water,... was so clear and the color of deep royal blue.  I could just lie on the deck chairs and let that perfect day takes me to another dimension of time and space.  We just assumed the lifestyle of the rich but not so famous for the rest of that afternoon. Night Falls and it was time to get dressed up and attend the Captain's Formal Night function. All the guest were supposed to look their best.  We were ushered into a lounge that was quickly filling up with other guests.  A Philippino Live Band was playing jazz as we sat comfortably at the lounge.  Waiters were offering hors d'oeuvres from silver trays, which we graciously helped ourselves to it numerous times.  Captain Roco (of Italian descent) emerged on stage and greeted us with a commanding voice; well, he's the Big Dick after all.  He then proceed to introduce the rest of the crew members to all of us.  There's this First Officer (also of Italian decent) that has an eerie resemblance of Al Pacino and a Maître d' from India. After the Captain's speech, we adjourned to the Grand Dining Hall for another scrumptious dinner.  We were assigned a fixed table for the duration of the cruise and have 2 regular waiters to wait on us.  One of them's from the Philippines (Litto) and the other, from St.Lucia (Glen). They were gregarious and affable in nature.  We have fond memories of them long after we left. The theatre is were we headed next for another evening of entertainment from a multitudinous of talent from Stand-up Comedians,Circus Performer to Magicians.(03-07-07)  3rd DAY AT SEALife at sea on a cruise liner was marvelous.  They say ignorance is bliss, well, there no bigger bliss than Hanging Ten on a luxurious cruise liner like the Carnival Conquest.  By the third day, we were ready to sign up as permanent resident.  We could just sat for hours on the open decks with the constant sun high above the clear blue sky.  Any real world problems seemed so far away beyond reach.  YES! life at sea was blissful and therapeutic.  There's seemed to be an invisible force at work out there luring us into the oblivion, like the siren of Lorelei casting a hypnotic spell over us, rendering us helpless over it's charm. Fortunately, before we started to turn into Thanksgiving turkeys,  our stomach needed pacifying.  We got ourselves another round of ice-creams and coffee.  That had became our staple diet for the duration of the cruise.  Wonders never ceased - party animals were prowling restlessly looking for the next available Jamboree.  We were more interested in some intellectual challenges that was install for those who were interested to participate.  Styled after the Game Show "Win Lose or Draw", the event drew-in a number of game show enthusiast participant including Ling and I.  If there's anything that the Americans is extremely good at; it's their trivial knowledge.  It's just so amazing that they can cramped so much of insignificant triviality in their brain. We were invited to visit the Galley (in layman's term, the ship's kitchen) where they churned out all those delicious meals 24-7.  That visit took us through the ship's wet and dry galley, the pastry kitchen, the fine dining section and the crew quarters.  We got to do some food tasting along the way.  It was the first introduction for me, to the work environment on board of a cruise liner.  Their workplace is comfortably huge compare to the galleys of a commercial jetliner.  I'm very envious of their spacious workplace.  If only.......nevermind! Sunset at a beach is beautiful.  Sunset in the middle of the ocean was even more remarkable.  There's an eerie calm as the sun slowly disappear below the horizon, turning the sky from indigo to deep blood-red, awesome! That night, at the Grand Dining Hall, I was crowned "The King of all humankind with an IQ below 35" by Litto, headgear and all.  Actually, he was just fooling around with us.  We were treated to a group performances by all the waiter and waitress, dancing to the tune of  "Mambo #5".  Never have I witness anywhere else that employees work and play with such fervour. And we reflected on every thing that we had experienced, and, behold, it was very good.  And the evening and the morning were the third day.

(23-06-07)  DALLAS - TEXASFinally after more that 24hrs of travel, we arrived at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.  Hard to believe but it was still the 23rd of June when we arrived in Dallas.  That's the soul zapping and mind boggling trick the International Date Line will play on you if you so much as cross over it heading East.  Yeah! we have gain an extra day!!! That's a cause to celebrate rite?  Well, payback's a BITCH! as we later found out at the end of our saga.My mum, May and her hubby Wade were there waiting for us with fervour, followed by a sharp enthusiastic soprano yapping from May's 9yrs old female Pomeranian, Nikki, an adorable sight.  Lots of licks followed as I picked her up for the first time, oh! how my face needed that exfoliation after that 24hrs marathon flight.  Wade drove us to my favourite haunt, Denny's, for supper.  Ahhh! Real Meal at last! after all those sorry-excuse-of-a-meal call airline-cuisine.  After supper, we headed for May's Home, err..., I meant Castle for the first time.  We settle in for the night and boy!, did we sleep like a log that night. (24-06-07)  TRADERS VILLAGE and DINNER at MANNY'SWe woke to a sunny afternoon the following day, refreshed and ready to take on the world.  May suggested to make a trip to Traders Village(a flea market of some sort) to scour for good bargains.  Traders Village was a Treasure Trove.  I bought some T-shirts and a pair of Crocs equivalent for only US10! and it served me well throughout the trip.  I'm still using them today after 1 ½year.  Not forgetting our beloved pups back home, we custom-made two dog tags with their name engraved in the shape of a bone for them. After a difficult effort to wean ourselves off from the lure of the Flea, Wade took us to Manny's (A Mexican Restaurant) for a sumptuous dinner and beers, which we ate to our heart's content.  We called it a day after that. (25-06-07)  GRAPEVINE MILLS and CRACKER BARRELThe following morning, Chef May and Chef Mom prepared us a hearty breakfast.  Then off we went in search of day care centre and nursery for Emma. The trip to the US will never be complete without setting foot on a Factory Outlet Store.  There I came face to face with a Bison, a grazing beast that roam the Great Plains of the Americas.  The highlight of the day was lunch at Cracker Barrel, an old country restaurant.  This rustic country style restaurant is a must to try.  Their specialty is deep fried catfish served with homemade buttermilk biscuit. (26-06-07)  6th FLOOR MUSEUM, AW SHUCKS DINNER and HELLO EMMAThat was the day that we virtually saw the assassination of President JFK through the eyes of Lee Harvey Oswald.  The historical event took place on Friday the 22nd of November 1963.  The shot was fired from the 6th floor of the Texas School Book Depository which has been made into a museum today to showcase that tragic event.  We walked to the spot on Elm Street where JFK was shot and looked up to the 6th floor of the Depository.  I immediately got goose bumps and expecting to hear 3 gunshots from the ghost of the past; I gotta stop reading those Stephen King's novel. Evening came and it's time to fetch mum for dinner.  May was in labour and Wade's at the hospital waiting for the stork to come flying by.  Dinner at Aw Shucks was a delightful experience.  The Crawfish and Catfish platter was surprisingly flavoursome.  Crawfish also reminded me of the lyrics from the song Jambalaya. Back at Baylor Hospital after dinner, we all waited in great anticipation for the good news from Wade.  Approximately 11pm CST, Emma greeted the world with a Mike Myer's Dr.Evil impersonation, so cute!  Check out her 1hr old pics taken by yours truly.  May was totally out cold due to heavy sedation but Wade was a jubilant dad.  I dutifully informed all family members back home about the good news and everyone seemed to share this joyous occasion vehemently.  Within the next hour, everyone back home got to lay their eyes on baby Emma's gorgeous face, thanks to the marvel of modern technology, the Internet. (27-06-07)  EMMA 1 DAY OLD, ALLEN PREMIUM OUTLET, and JAKE'SThe next day, we took turns to hold Emma in our arms.  The night before, she seemed so fragile and delicate.  It's an amazing feeling to cradle a new life in your arms and let the fact that, the next generation is here, sink-in.  Ling only muster up enough courage to gently touch Emma with 1 finger.  No persuasion was sufficed to get her to carry Emma in her arms; baby might just melt away in her tight embrace...ha ha! Then it's off to another Factory Outlet looking for more financial dent in out wallet.  Finally, we rewarded ourselves with Dinner at Jake's.  The burger there was colossal and worthy to be called, America's finest. (28-06-07)  FORT WORTH and GUN RANGEEmma finally open up her eyes on the 2nd day to check out her surrounding or maybe she's just annoyed by our constant baby-talk to her.  I bet she just wanna wring our necks and shut our babble to get some peace. Fort Worth is well known for it's Old Western Influence.  We took mum there to experience the Cowboy Lifestyle and the herding of the Fame Texas Long Horn.  An eye opening experience for us.  Don't miss out the opportunity to eat all the ribs you can eat for only US$10, ...a steal!, by any measure.  Not great but excellently priced. We had late lun at IHOP (International House of Pancake).  They serve the best value-for-money pancakes.  There's a wide range of choice to choose from.  Yummy! One of Wade's hobby is Guns.  He owns a couple of rifle and a revolver.  If you ask me, the best way to let off some steam is to go to the Shooting Range and fire off a few rounds imagining the target is your favourite nemesis.  Of all the exciting things in life, nothing beats firing a sniper rifle and blasting away with the hand gun like Dirty Harry.  Do you feel lucky?  Or do I,... PUNK!?  We had a good time at the Gun Range that Wade frequently patronized.

Taipei, Taiwan

We transit in Taipei for 1hr 45mins before making our way to Los Angeles.  During transit, all passengers have to bring down all their hand carried items to be screened by security before being allowed back on board.  This regulation was enforced by The United States of America to counter would-be-terrorist bringing weapons and home made bombs on board for the purpose of delivering carnage to America's soil.  Works pretty well so far, I suppose.

Our flight flew pass the Greenwich Meridian to reach Arlanda Stockholm, Sweden.  The plane stopped for 1½ hour to refuel and to pickup some fresh catering supplies before continuing it's 12 hours flight back to Malaysia.

BACK TO GALVESTON - LONG DRIVE BACK TO DALLASOur voyage finally came to an end since we set sail eight days ago.  It was a Great Adventure and an Extraodinary Experience for me and Ling.  We never regretted the effort, the time and money we invested in this trip.After clearing Immigrations and Customs, we took a shuttle to the carpark to retrive my sister's car.  The drive back to Dallas took us through Houston again.  From Houston, we hunkered down for a 430km drive home on Interstate 45 N.  We waved Sam Houston good bye as we were leaving the city limit.
