Dijon, France

Oh Dijon. What a funny little town it is. My experience here in France has certainly been unforgettable and my heart frowns when I am reminded of how little time I have left here. There are certainly things I miss (warm cars, rain boots, ice tea, yummy cereal, and pizza) but my time here has been so incredible I'm not really sure where to begin.

France is such a funny place to me sometimes. Some of the stereotypes are true: they never freaking work! Everything closes at 7pm - everything. On Mondays, the city is dead. But on Saturdays, the city center is jam-packed you can barely even walk the streets. For the past few weekends I've stayed in Dijon. One weekend there was a sports tournament between my school and four others. It was so completely French, which I found hilarious. If a team was too tired to play a game, they'd just postpone it until the next day or just cancel it all together - no forfeits or anything. It was completely unorganized. The sports played were football (soccer), rugby, basketball, volleyball, and handball. Handball is a French sport, but I had actually played it before in OSU intramurals so it was fun to watch. And they had a cheerleading contest between schools and the cheerleaders were very serious about their performance but I thought it was an absolute riot because it was terrible! Haha. It was painful - but hilarious.

This past weekend was the opening of the Christmas Market (which we found out we had when we unexpectedly ran into it on a Saturday stroll) and the skating rink. (Well, its hardly a rink... it's actually tiny and quite pitiful but fun nonetheless) AND the best part is the city center has Christmas lights everywhere! They have been putting up Christmas lights since the beginning of November so we've been anticipating them actually turning them on! And they finally did! It is so nice!

I have some added some more photos in the album so check it out!

As for school, my semester is coming to a close. I have two finals this week and then I only have one more test before I leave! This coming weekend I'm going to Brussels to meet Lindsey and I cant wait!
Stockholm, Sweden

Hi everyone! So I have some wild news... back in October I was talking to Lindsey and she told me that her and our friend Weber were going to a Mika concert! I was so jealous but then Weber and I decided (behind Lindsey's back tehehe) that it would be fun if I came to Stockholm to surprise Lindsey and go to the Mika concert! The concert was on November 9th but Weber and I had been planning this since the beginning of October and let me tell you, it was so so difficult to not tell Lindz! I saw her twice (once in Dijon and once in Amsterdam) and even when she tried to rub it in my face that she was going to a Mika concert, I still played it cool.

But I flew to Stockholm Thursday afternoon and Weber and I devised a plan to surprise Lindz. And let me tell you, she was completely shocked and had no idea! She totally screamed like a girl and it was so awesome! Then on Friday night we went to the Mika concert! It was incredible! We had an absolute blast... almost as good as Hanson... almost. Afterwards the three of us went to a tiny gay vodka bar that played cheesy Swedish music. The Swedes dance horribly and now we know why... its because the music is so terrible! Actually, its just fun and cheesy. Imagine ABBA times four. Haha. We had such a great time!

The entire weekend was so great and I'm so glad I got to spend one more weekend in Stockholm. I'm afraid it might be quite a while before I make it back.

Thanks to Weber for everything - we were flawless in keeping a secret from Lindsey! But Lindz, I dont like keeping secrets from you - its so hard!
Koln, Germany

So after Berlin the plan was to go to Prague but after we learned that it was a seventeen hour train ride from Prague to Paris, we nixed that idea and decided to spend the remainder of our week in Germany. So off to Cologne it was. We didnt know anything about it but it was on the way to France and we had a place to stay so that decided that. It ended up being a really great town and we had a great time! (Except that we had absolute shit weather, which is why most of our pictures arent very good. It was freezing and misty. Misty doesnt sound as bad as rain but its actually worse because it clouds everything and doesnt fall hard so it just goes right in your face even with an umbrella...)

When you first walk out of the train station, the first thing you see is the Dom and it is absolutely breath-taking! The Dom is a cathedral that was finished in 1880 after six centuries and is Germany's most beautiful cathedral. It survived 14 bombings during WWII. It is by far the most beautiful church I have ever seen, I highly recommend it if anyone is within a few thousand miles of Germany, and I'm quite sure I'll be back to see it again someday. Its a shame how no pictures do it justice. The pictures I took just simply dont do it justice! Fortunately, I have my memory. If you get a chance, you should totally google it.

Our first night we walked around on the cobblestone streets and the town was quite busy with pubs and cafes. We found an Irish pub; we were the youngest people in there by a good twenty years but we made some friends with some French guys who were on a business trip for the week and made friends with the bar tender and talked some American football and basketball. On our walk back to the hostel, we went by the Dom and were mesmerized for a good twenty minutes. We finally got tired of straining our necks so we just laid down in front of it and stared at it for another thirty. It was just so beautiful! And ok, so we had a few beers...

The Dom was pretty much the only tourist thing we did. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Hi again! So we had a week break from school. Kinda like a fall break I guess. It was from October 29 - Nov 2nd, but with the weekends it was Oct 26 - Nov 4 so we decided to hit up a few cities. We left Thursday and traveled to first to Amsterdam, then went to Berlin and Cologne, Germany. This entry only includes Amsterdam but be sure to check out Berlin and Cologne!

So....Amsterdam... beautiful city! My second favorite city thus far (Istanbul being my most favorite, of course). Oh Amsterdam... I'm trying to figure out how to describe it. The architecture and the buildings are all so beautiful and this makes the city so easy to fall in love with. It is a unique layout of a city because there are canals everywhere. It is difficult to explain so I have included this link so that you can get an idea of the city.
http://images.worldres.com/search/lang1/map_amsterdam.png

Everyone - and I mean everyone - rides bikes. Its madness. You really have to look where you're going or they'll 'ding' you. (Ding = ring their bike-bell at you) And the Red Light District is like no other. Its a must-see of Amsterdam, especially at night when the streets are glowing with red lights (coincidence?). And all the prosititutes dance around in their tiny glass windows trying to get men's attention. And there are donut and fast food stands everywhere. Pictures are strictly forbidden.

Lindsey joined Paige and I for the weekend beacuse it was my birthday and this made me so happy! We had a great time together! And then our Argentinen friend (who is an absolute doll!), Francisco, joined us. And our Turkish friends, Asli, Muge, and Sado joined us as well. We love them. Lindsey, Paige and I rented bikes for our time there, which was a blast. And ya know...its just like riding a bike.

We also went to the Van Gogh Museum, which was really cool. I really enjoyed that alot. I'm really glad that I got to learn his history and see his less famous works, some of which became my favorite over his famous ones. Cool guy.

The city is gorgeous, the people very nice, and all the tourist stuff is great, but one of my most favorite memories of Amsterdam was toting Lindsey around on the back of my bike. It was an absolute riot and I ran into a few walls (and fell off on my ass once) at the beginning but eventually got the hang of it. We laughed so hard! Haha good times, good times!

Check out Berlin and Cologne! Berlin, Germany

After Amsterdam, Paige and I heaed off to Berlin. This was my first time in Germany so this was pretty exciting to me since I've always wanted to visit Deutschland! We arrived at night into the Berlin Hauptbahnhof (which is a fun word to say, especially if you throw a little extra spit in there like the Germans haha. But Hauptbahnhof is German for Central Station.) and were a bit overwhelmed with how huge the train station was! It was difficult to even find the exit. But we finally found our way to the Hostel, which was pretty decent. Our friend Sado was in Berlin for two nights so that was nice to have him join us on our journey. Sado is our friend from school who is from Turkey.

Berlin is a pretty cool city. Complete opposite of Amsterdam. But a cool city none-the-less. Its huge, but unlike a lot of European cities, it is very modern and not very pretty. But I really like Berlin, especially because I saw my first on-the-street-corner prostitutes! In Amsterdam's Red Light District they just prance around behind glass doors, but in Berlin, they actually stand on the street corners with their Pretty Woman-like boots. You know what I'm talking about. And they wear corsetts on top of their jackets. Wiggity wack. Unfortunately I didnt get a picture of the lovely hookers - I thought that might be a bit rude.

I did all the tourists things - National Museum (which took me an entire two hours to find haha), Berlin Tower (see pictures) - aka The Jetsons Tower, Checkpoint Charlie, Jewish Memorial, Berlin Wall, and my fav - Tiergarden. All very different and very cool experiences. Tiergarden is like a Central Park for Berlin - its beautiful, calm, and huge. Berlin was so huge that it was easier for us to get around by riding bikes. And we had such a blast with the bikes in Amsterdam so we rented bikes for a few days. One of my most favorite was 'off-roadin' (hardly off-roading) in Tiergarden with the beautiful yellow and orange leaves falling all around us.

<img title="Riding Bikes! We usually just chilled around, relaxed, and prepared for the next day.

What else? One major bonus of the city was that when we returned our bikes, the guy accidently charged us for one day instead of two. I enjoyed some great German beer. Not my favorite beer of Europe, but still better than our Coors Light so cant complain there. Haha. Oh! And we found this American Diner called 'The Sixties' and it was Route 66 themed! It was so cool and the owner kept coming up to us asking if we felt at home. They had Oklahoma-themed foods (they were all completely random and had nothing to do with Oklahoma haha) AND all over the ceiling was Route 66 stuff with most of it being about Oklahoma! So random. It had Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Will Rogers stuff , and a bunch of random Oklahoma stuff. I got a huge kick out of it. Then Hakim (the owner) asked me to marry him (I said yes!! Psych!). Turns out he is Egyptian, living in Berlin, owner of an American restaurant. Funny guy. But we had a great time.

So I think those were the highlights of Berlin. Jetsons Tower - prostitutes - getting lost - and diners... yup, sums that up.

Next stop - Cologne, Germany

ps. if you ever get the chance to eat the German pastry called a Strusseltaler (or something like that....), eat it! It is quite delectable! Mmm...
Dijon, France

Lindz was able to take a quick weekend break from work to visit me in Dijon! And luck would have it that the one day the stupid french decide to have a train strike is the one day Lindsey was traveling by train from Paris to Dijon. So unfortunately, she arrived about 7 hours late. But we had some nice dinners, relaxed, I showed her a bit of Dijon, we visited a church that I hadnt been to yet which was a lovely little find.

Saturday night was Homecoming back in the homeland of Stillwater. Of course I was having serious Homecoming-withdrawls so having her around was awesome. Lindsey, Paige, and I got in our orange (actually I think I'd had my OSU shirt on all week), gathered in the kitchen, and listened to OSU play an incredible game against Kansas State! We had an absolute blast with our unique tailgate.

I'm so glad she was able to visit and see my cute little flat I call home. We have fun no matter where we are. And Dad, I made some awesome salsa egg sandwiches - you would have been thoroughly impressed.

So... check out the pics. Batter on deck: Amsterdam. Batter in the hole: Berlin. Until then, be well and happy and healthy. Miss you Love you!

--Kelly
Budapest, Hungary

Oh Budapest! What an interesting experience we had! Paige and I went from Istanbul to Budapest and the two cities could not be more different. We had enjoyed a perfect week in Istanbul, which is a beautiful and colorful city that is fast-paced and fun. We had beautiful hot, sunny weather and our days were filled with activity. We arrive into Budapest and it is rainy and cold and everything was going wrong. We were riding the bus to our hostel and at one point Paige and I just looked at each other - we both knew what the other was thinking: why the hell didn't we stay in Istanbul?! We didn't even feel like we were in a capitol city - we felt like we were in a random nowhere town in Russia!
(pic: cold and sad and hungry in budapest)

We ended up having a blast in Budapest - not because of what the city had to offer but because of our hostel. We stayed at Backpack Budapest, which was a complete hippie hostel. Everyone who came with plans to stay only a few nights ended up staying way longer than expected because the hostel was a home to everyone. We ended up making friends with three boys our age from Florida: Joe, John, and Kyle.
(pic: left to right, Joe, Paige, Me, Kyle, John, Waiterfriend)

The five of us had so much fun together and instantly became a little family. We didn't leave the hostel very often because it was so cosy. But we did tour a bit of Budapest...

-- the baths: There were these natural hot baths that could pay to get into and they rocked. The air was a bit cold, but the water was great. And there were spas and cold tubs and all sorts. I particularly liked the baths because I was skipping showering in Hungary all together. We liked/hated to go from the sweltering hot spa to the ice cold pools. It hurt so bad it almost felt good. Almost. (I forgot to take pics, sorry)

-- House of Terror: This was once the headquarters of Nazi and Soviet regimes. The museum was full of information (unfortunately most was in Hungarian) but was one of the best museums I've ever been to because of its artist display. Every room was incredibly unique and moving. Unfortunately, the basement of the offices was a prison and torture chamber. I'd prefer not to go into detail - its grueling.

So thats pretty all we toured. We walked around alot and looked at stuff, but didn't do much touristy stuff. By the end, I must say, that Budapest had grown on me. It has so much history and the best part: free transportation throughout the city (only because we cheated) and pretty good beer. Haha.

But when I think back of my time in Budapest, I think more of our hostel and the people we met: (A holla out to my homies!)

-- Chris Bobby: Who's real name was Bobby but I accidentally kept calling him Chris so he eventually became Chris Bobby to everyone. He was a semi-obnoxious Californian who was half-enjoyable to hear his take on things, half-miserably annoying.

-- Tyler: The guy at the front desk who liked to talk about religion and bite people. Me and Paige in particular.

-- Georgie-Peorgie: May he forever live in my heart! The 40ish year old Englishman who was completely inappropriate and smoked over 2 packs a day. He was a riot because you could never tell when he was serious and when he wasnt and whether he was a genius or just that simple. I decided in my head that he probably has around 4 illegitimate children, two wives, and at least one mistress.

-- Steve and No-name: Georgie's friends who also smoke somewhere around 2 packs a day. Also hilarious.

--Fabiana: 38 year old woman from Argentina who lived each day to the fullest. She was intelligent, made friends everywhere she went, was full of energy, and was traveling the world by herself. I hope one day I can be as loving, effervescent, and independent as she is!

And so many more unique characters that will always randomly make me smile.

So thats Budapest. Once again, I hope everyone is in good spirits and good health. I hope everyone is also laughing enough; on average, children laugh 400 times a day - adults laugh on 15 times a day. So laugh it up - we've gotta up our number!
Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul! Where do I even begin?! Once again, I suppose I'll just have to start at the beginning...

So we didnt start orientation until September 11, so Paige and I decided to arrive in France at the end of August so that we could travel around before school began. She had a close friend (Alp) who lived in Istanbul and invited us to visit. (Alp attended ESC Dijon (thats my school) last semester with Paige). So we decided to go there for 6 days, and it was not near enough time to spend in Turkey! Here were our adventures...

--real quick, before you read all this, i suggest checking out my photo album first. this blog will make so much more sense!

We had to take the train back to Paris to fly out to Istanbul, which was a bit of an adventure getting to Orly Airport in Paris. For some reason we encountered the strangest things, but we made some friends along the way (shout out to Bert and Lloyd. Holla!). We arrive in Istanbul (by the way, Turkish Airlines ROCKs. you know how you always wish you could see out the front window of the airplane? well, i always do. i always think it would be so cool to be a pilot just for the view. well, TA truly cares about their customers (American Airlines, take note please) because they put a camera at the front of the plane and then show the view on the little tv in the seat in front of you. Brilliant!) and I get to meet Alp (aka Alpalicious) and he immediately takes us to this outside bar that overlooks the Bosphorus and the city. It was incredible. I couldnt beleive how lucky I was: watching Istanbul softly sparkle into the night while in the company of good friends... and it was only the beginning! I knew then that I'd have a perfect trip that I'd never forget.

So over the course of the next few days we ate the most amazing foods. We tried everything and Alp was the best host we could ask for. He took us everywhere and knew the ins and outs of the whole city. I wish I could go into full detail about every hour of every day in Istanbul, but it would just be to much for my audience. So... I'll just outline things that stuck out in my mind most...

-- hooka bars! hooka bars with rose and lemon tea. mmm...
(pic: Alp and Seren at the hooka bar!)

-- dancing the night away at club Riena. it is the huge outdoor club that is right next to the Bosphorus and is a perfect view of one of the bridges leading to the Asian side of Istanbul. we got home just in time to hear the prayer call at 5am. haha. i wasnt kidding when i said "danced the night away"

-- galata tower. such a beautiful view of the city!
(pic: me on top of Galata tower!)
(pic: Paige and I infront of Galata Tower)

-- eating a fried fish whole... bones and head and all.

-- Aya Sofya (see photo album)

-- the beautiful city of Bursa and meeting Alp's mom!

-- Turkish bath: Lord have mercy on my soul! haha. this is quite a story: So Alp was set on taking Paige and I to a Turkish Bath, which I was totally down for because I'm always ready to experience new things and baths always sound nice, right? Had I known what I was getting into, I may not have been so adament about going. So Alp tell us, "ok, you go in, you change into a towel, and then they give you a massage". We ask if we should take anything (ei, a swimsuit) or need anything. He says no and shrugs it off like a swimsuit is just unheard of. So Paige and I walk in and are being lead around by this woman speaking Turkish so we have no idea what she is telling us to do. We figure out that we are given rooms to change into towels and clogs. yes, clogs... no idea why. we change and she takes us into this big marble room full of natural hot tubs and the first thing you see is body parts of a woman that arent displayed even on those girls-gone-wild commercials. and she's being scrubbed down by some scrubber-lady. no kidding. this turkish woman is speaking turkish to us telling us what to do. paige and i pretty much just stared blankly at each for an entire half-minute. here we are in skimpy towels and clogs listening to a turkish woman in a marble room with a naked woman in arm's reach but everyone else has swimsuits on. everyone is staring at us and we're trying to figure out do we take off our towels or not? i just look at paige and say "paige, i have a feeling we about to become alot closer". so we just head into the natural hot tubs with our towels on and the scrubber-lady calls for the next to be scrubbed down. paige points at me for me to go first. so i decided to be bold and just do it. i said to myself "self, dont be embarrassed, just enjoy this once in a lifetime experience". she strips off my towel and tells me to lay down for the massage. i was stark naked being scrubbed down by a woman displayed to all on a marble slab. and i must say, it was awesome!! a complete (i mean complete) body massage and body scrub! and after all that, i'd certainly do it again.

-- The Cistern, Blue Mosque, and the Palaces! Three beautiful beautiful places!

-- kebabs in bursa - its the most delicious thing i've ever eaten. it was so good that i couldnt stop. i was 3/4ths done with my plate and i thought to myself "if i stop now, i'll throw up before i finish...so i better keep eating". disgusting i know. but it was THAT good.

-- drinking tea (and having french fries!) in Asia! i just love saying that.

-- Grand Bazaar

-- brownie and pistache ice cream at the islands. it was so good that paige and i swore that the next time we were in istanbul that we'd go to the islands just for the ice cream.

-- sadly, most of our best memories were of getting food! we keep saying things like "oh! remember that waffle that we had for breakfast?!" or "i would kill for a kebab right about now" or "oh that ice cream was sooo good!" or "Those meatballs wer incredible!". we ate everything. really.

So due to popular demand, this blog is finally going out. I have a feeling I'll have to do another Istanbul blog...after all, it is the city of dreams!

Coming soon: Budapest
