Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Today is my last full day in Calgary, so I made a day-trip to West Edmonton Mall for some last minute souvenirs. The Mall is apparently the world's largest shopping and entertainment centre. And as well as shopping, it has a waterpark and a theme park and a whole host of other things. It was an uninspiring 3 hour drive there. And I only stayed for a few hours, but I managed to make a quick dash around the whole mall before driving back to Calgary for a reasonable hour. http://www.westedmall.com/home/default.asp

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

The weather was still a bit dreary in Vancouver, but I decided to head to Granville Island for afternoon and have a look around. The Island is within an easy walk of downtown Vancouver. The walk takes you over a bridge with an aerial view of the island. The island is small but has plenty of charm. The heart seems to be a busy market, with lots of places to get food and coffee. I then headed back to Tricia's place. Today was her birthday, so we went to an Ethiopian restaurant for dinner. The food was actually pretty good. We basically had a big platter to share, with a few different dips on it, some of which are quite spicy. Accompanying are some pancakes, which have quite a heavy spongy texture. Eating with your hands is the order of the day! We also shared some honey wine which was delicious. We then headed out to the bar in the Samesun Backpackers, where Tricia works for a few beers.

Today, i drove from Courtenay to Victoria. I then took the 25-min flight over to Vancouver. My friend Tricia is kindly putting me for a few nights, and then I fly back to Calgary on Saturday.

Well, i'm back in Swindon for the moment but next week I'm off to Luxor, Egypt with my family for two weeks. After that I'll have a few days back at home, before flying out to spend Xmas in New York with my aunt and cousin. I will post some pictures from both trips on onto the end of this blog.

Port Hardy, British Columbia, Canada

It was a horrible rainy day, and I after the not-so-fun first-time experience of needing to put air in one of my tyres I was off to Port Hardy. The drive took about three hours overall, but because of the weather I didn't make any real stops on the way. I spent most of the afternoon in the hotel. However, I did spot a bald eagle flying around in the bay. When the rain let off I ventured outside for a look, but couldn't see it. So I 'm hoping that there is good weather and some better viewing opportunities to get some photos tomorrow.

Port Hardy, British Columbia, Canada

This morning I drove the half an hour or so south to the small town of Telegraph Cove. The town was built as a sawmilling village in the 1920's and 1930's. The town is picturesque as the houses are built on stilts over the water. In the summer hundreds of killer whales can be seen in the shallow areas of water near the cove. However, at this time of year the services of the town were closed for the season. When I first got there I was the only person wandering around the boardwalk, and only a handful of people visited during the time I was there. I then drove back to Port Hardy, stopping in at Storey Beach on the way. It's reputed as a great place for bird watching. Today it was just way too cold for a walk on the beach. I tried  throwing on a few more layers of clothes, but I couldn't overcome the temptation to hop back in the car and get back to Port Hardy. I had planned on cosying up in the hotel for a bit when I got back. However,  from the balcony of my room, I could see that the Bald Eagles were out in the bay. So I forced myself back out into the cold, and spent about an hour and a half trying to get a decent photo. They just weren't having any of it. I couldn't even get within 50 feet of them, without them flying off to seek refuge in the very tall trees lining the road. And even then they were just too high up to get a decent photo. So i retired back to the hotel room to defrost, and keep an eye out across the balcony, but unfortunately there were no more sightings and soon it was dark.

Tofino, British Columbia, Canada

Today was a beautiful clear sunny day, perfect for exploring the beaches in the Pacific Rim National Park. The park streches between Tofino and the town of Ucluelet, about 40km's away. After a quick trip into Ucluelet to determine there wasn't much going on I drove back towards Tofino stopping at Wickannish beach, South Beach, Florencia Bay, Long Beach and the Radar Hill Lookout. I finished the day with some sunset pictures at Mackenzie Beach in Tofino.
