Well, once again very sorry for the delay in posting, but we flew into London early Friday morning and have been essentially non-stop since that time. Here is an update with pertinent photos. We will enjoy the last day of this huge excursion tomorrow and then fly back on Wednesday, arriving late that night in the comforts of StarkVegas. I don't know if I will post again before then, so enjoy...June 27 - Day 11 - Jet Lag Times TwoWe were already tired and tired some more when we arrived in Edinburgh early last week, but when we coupled that with a 6:15 a.m. flight from there to London on Friday, it hit us, and it hit hard. We were able to take a quick bus ride around London (with it raining on us again) before the brick wall nailed all of us around mid-afternoon. From there, it was to the hotel to check-in (we had to leave our bags with the hotel since check-in wasn't until 2) and absolutely crash. We all got 2-3 solid hours of rest-eye before taking in a nice supper in a pub in central London. That pretty much wrapped up our first day on the River Thames.June 28 - Day 12 - London Hot SpotsVivian and I took off Saturday and made a huge run around central London, hitting virtually all of the cliche tourist spots. Granted, most of these cliches have history dating back 500 years or more.We pretty much took a west-to-east approach from our headquarters, which are situated directly behind the London Eye on the river. From there we cross the Thames, walked past Big Ben and Parliament (we looked for the Griswalds in the roundabout but didn't see them) for at least the third time already and started with Westminster Abbey. One of many destinations that has not allowed photography inside during our trip, it was truly&nbsp;a site to behold. Seeing the coronation chair that has been used for crownings since the 1300s. Many great names are also buried at the Abbey, including Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, Charles Darwin and Sir Isaac Newton.From there, we marched northward to Buckingham Palace to catch the Changing of the Guard. We arrived for the 11:30 ceremony at around 10:50 and the place was packed, but we found a good spot to get the just of the show. The actual guard house is located just south-southeast of the Palace and we had seen that coming in, so calculated where a solid place might be. Got some great pics here (see full gallery below this entry).After escaping the Saturday morning crowd, we walked south and hitched our first ride on The Tube, London's subway system, which is most certainly the way to get around here. We rode that over to St. Paul's Cathedral for our second sanctuary stop of the day. We wanted to visit both Westminster and St. Paul's on Saturday because they do actual hold Sunday services and are closed to the public as a result. St. Paul's is, like Westminster,&nbsp;a grand structure with&nbsp;amazing architecture. No photos allowed again, but they were at the top of the facility - from the landmark dome that sits atop. To get there, you only have to climb 530 stairs. We did. It was fun. Coming down. But the trek up afforded some great views of the city from above as well as an interesting look at the structure and building schema of St. Paul's from within.Continuing our blazing tour of the north side of the river, we hopped on the Tube again, exiting at Tower Hill station, which left us just a stone's throw from The Tower of London. There, we again saw all the history surrounding it, including the Crown Jewels (just can't keep Viv away from those diamonds!), the Ravens and other items of interest. It was also cool to see the moat surrounding it, part of which still looked workable.Following that whirlwind of a day, we took the remain few hours of daylight we had and walked back along the north edge of the river, taking in the city from that angle at a slightly slower pace. At dusk, I wanted to work on my night photography skills a bit, so I concentrated on (you guessed it) Big Ben and&nbsp;Parliament across the river from our hotel. A little tidbit for you, btw, and I did not know this coming over here&nbsp;- Big Ben refers to the largest of the five bells inside the clock tower, not the tower or the clock.That night, we slept VERY well.June 29 - Day 13 - Standing on Both Sides of the World; Are We Camping Out?On Sunday, we walked about the city a bit more in the morning, one of the stops coming at 85 Vauxhall Cross, better known as MI6, even better known as the British Secret Intelligence Service. Needless to say, I had to visit this facility building&nbsp;and, if you don't know why, you don't know me very well.That came before taking our first excursion outside of our central London cocoon that afternoon to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, just a few miles east. That trip was a great treat, getting to see the famous Prime Meridian which, <i>as you should all know,&nbsp;divides the eastern and western hemispheres of the earth and is situated at zero degrees longitude. It is also the line which, since the late 19th century, has served as the reference line for Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).One thing that was interesting about the Prime Meridian was that GPS units (yes, I had mine with me) don't actually zero out right on the line. Instead I found mine doing that about 330 feet east. The reason for that, I was told by the experts at the observatory, is twofold:1) The Earth is a geoid (has an irregular surface) and the universal GPS datum (WGS84) is a different measurement2) Continental drift has caused slight variations over timeSo there's your science lesson for today.Our trip to and from Greenwich, which also included a&nbsp;visit to the nearby National Maritime Museum,&nbsp;was not a pleasant one as half of the Tube line we expected to take was down for weekend repairs. But they were kind enough to offer us a free bus trip for the second leg of our journey in both directions.During the past few days I had been trying to reach my good friend, coach Andy Jackson, who, as you recall from an early post in this blog, was working on Wimbledon ducats for us many moons ago. Well, CJ finally gave me a call on Sunday evening and had tough news to deliver - no luck on finding any Centre Court passes for us. As luck would have it, he did not travel to London for the 2008 Championships for the only like the second time in the past 15-20 years (or something like that - you get the idea). That, combined with the fact that the influential folks he had contacted about helping us out just couldn't help on this occasion. We appreciated everything he did in trying, though, and moved on to our final options (CJ, if you read this, please don't feel bad anymore - it's ok, really).I had worked the web some Sunday afternoon just to see if I could find anything on uk.ebay.com or anywhere else, just for the 30th (we had decided on Friday that Monday was the day to target since Roger Federer was playing Lleyton Hewitt followed by the upstart Brit Andy Murray later in the day (Nadal was playing too, but I'm no more of a fan of his than that guy who plays golf well). Anyhow, couldn't find much luck on the web. I texted one guy about a message board post for two CC tix for Monday for 220 pounds. Turns out he wanted 500 pounds for both of 'em and that's one grand in U.S. funding, folks&nbsp;- too rich for this man's blood for one day of tennis.The absolute last option was camping out at Wimbledon overnight Sunday night and be among the first 500 in the queue (that's the&nbsp;nice, proper British way of saying standing in line) when the gates opened Monday morning. That would guarantee us Centre Court access for the day. To our credit, we did go out there that evening around 9 o'clock&nbsp;(with nothing but a&nbsp;small suitcase of necessities just in case we decided to do it)&nbsp;and checked the queue. Our numbers would have been 946&nbsp;and 947. Those would have guaranteed us Court 1 tickets, but the match&nbsp;we really wanted to see (Federer) was on the grandaddy - Centre - and I knew our chances were not good at getting two of the 500 tickets to that court, with the local hero Murray on the schedule of play as well. So, after meeting a guy from Canada who was a first-time queuer&nbsp;as well,&nbsp;we decided to bag that plan for a good night's sleep in our hotel and arose early Monday to again join the queue, but for grounds passes only, which allow you only onto courts 2-19, still some great tennis.But let me just say this - had I known 48 hours&nbsp;ago what I know about that process now, we would have bought a tent, arrived Sunday around Noon with everything we could possibly need for the next 18 hours, spent the day in the queue,&nbsp;and&nbsp;slept on the grounds of Wimbledon Park Sunday night. I couldn't think of a greater story. But to be honest, what we really got us in this situation was Andy Murray. Had he not made the round of 16, or not been playing as part of the Centre Court ticket on Monday, we probably would have had a chance to see Federer play in person. What we heard on Monday was that the folks who got the 500th ticket for that court were in the queue Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. As a comparison, when we left Monday night around 7 p.m.&nbsp;and walked past that same queue of tents (there for Tuesday), there appeared to only be about 100 in line. Regardless of all that jibberish, we would still walk the hallowed grounds on Monday and it would be memorable...June 30 - Day 14 - The Championships, WimbledonWe arose Monday morning at a still pretty early time, just not on the damp ground at Wimbledon. We left the hotel around 7 a.m. and jumped on the Tube again at Waterloo station, changed at Westminster and travel the 10 stops out to Wimbledon. We joined the queue (same numbering from the night before) and were #s 3838 and 3839. That was a relief because we knew that pretty much guaranteed we were getting in for the day (they typically allow 6,000 grounds passes).That was at about 8:30. A cat-nap or two and a lot of standing up and sitting down on the ground later and we finally walked through the turnstiles around 10:45. That all may seem tedious, but the queueing system at Wimbledon is really quite remarkable. I can't describe it other than to say (1) yes, there is waiting, (2) they make you feel good about it and do a good job of&nbsp;administering&nbsp;it&nbsp;and (3) the experience is unforgettable because your doing it with about 8-10,000 other people who want the same thing. In fact, while in line, we talked briefly with folks behind us who turned out to be from Kansas City and Milwaukee.OK...we enter are now inside the gates of the AELTC! Awesome.The first thing we did was walk over to the practice courts to see what players we might catch practicing (matches didn't start until around Noon). Didn't really see anybody notable that we recognized other than Marco Baghdatis, who we would see fall in a crazy five-set match on court 18 later in the day with Felipe Lopez.Then we found some grub and positioned ourselves on Henman Hill, named so because of all the Brits who've&nbsp;parked it there over the years watching the big screen for crowd favourite Tim Henman to try and break the British title jinx. From there, we watched Federer struggle with Hewitt for a set before rolling past him into the quarterfinals. I did manage to sneak a shot of Centre Court while they were playing and was actually able to get pretty close to the court before the match started.The remainder of the day, in a nutshell, we pretty much just took in the ambiance of being there, catching pieces of different matches here there, including some junior players, walking around the grounds and, of course, having some strawberries and cream! We left about the time Murray was down two sets to Richard Gasquet. When we arrived at the hotel, we were amazed to see he was serving for the match in the fifth set. We saw all the crazies packed into Henman Hill on TV and we both thought, "we were just there!"The experience will be, of course, unforgettable and hopefully not the last of my lifetime at the AELTC.<i>Once again, I'm tired. Our last two days have been spent, for the most part, touring the great city of Edinburgh, Scotland, so pretty much all of this entry will be about our experiences there. We have not had many sunny days during our time in Ireland and Scotland, but the big red ball of fire did sneak out a few times for us these last two days. Here is some of what we've seen. Given all this, we still probably only saw about 15-20 percent of the area...June 25 - Day 9 - More Castles and More RainWe took in two of Scotland's most historic castles Wednesday - Stirling and Edinburgh - while also exploring a bit of Edinburgh's "Old Town" in the process. I'm including links to these here so you can explore the full history of each as you wish...Stirling Castle is located in, well, Stirling, about 45 minutes northwest of Edinburgh. Unfortunately, it rained on us pretty much the whole time we were there. I know you're probably thinking we're about castled out, but each one of them seems to bring something new to the table. At Stirling, it was the Great Hall, the largest medieval banqueting hall ever built in Scotland. It was a nice-sized playroom to say the least.Following that visit, we high-tailed it back to our hotel in Dunfermline to catch the train for our first visit to downtown Edinburgh (parking and driving there is quite a mess). The train ride was enjoyable, lasting about 30 minutes each way. We pulled into Edinburgh-Waverley station downtown early in the afternoon.Once downtown, our group parted ways a bit and Vivian and I decided to go ahead and visit Edinburgh Castle, which sits high atop the city at the end of The Royal Mile. Among the many things housed there were the Scottish Crown Jewels (they did not allow photos in that room, sorry). After seeing those, of course, Vivian wanted her own set. I said "uh huh, yeah, sure" and we moved on. The castle was very impressive and offered some incredible panoramas of the city on all sides. It sits on top of an extinct volcano, high above the very center of the city.After departing there, we made our way all the way back down to the east end of the Royal Mile, where sits the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Scotland home of the Queen of England. Incidentally, Lizzy II is expected to arrive in Edinburgh some time in the next 3-4 days (exact time is not divulged for security reasons). Because of that, no tours of the facility were allowed this week.The weather continued to play around with us all afternoon, switching between rain showers and sunny skies seemingly every 10 minutes. Viv and I decided to call the walking quits around 7:00 and found a small Italian restaurant on the Mile to dine at. It was excellent (Italian, I have found to my liking, has a big presence in Scotland). Then it was back to the HI Express in Dunfermline via train to recharge for another fun-packed day.June 26 - Day 10 - Edinburgh, Part DeuxOur plan on day two in Edinburgh, at least a few of us (me, Viv and J.T. Earnest [her nephew]), was to hike to the top of the mountain (another volcanic site)&nbsp;in Holyrood Park (situated on the south side of the Palace). This was no hike for the weary, mind you. Tough? Not terribly. But it did have our hearts pumping and us taking breaks occassionally. It was a 231-meter (823 feet) ascent in about a half-mile distance. At the top is Arthur's Seat, the highest point in the park. As a reference for you, it is situated about a mile east of Edinburgh Castle. The climb was enjoyable and the views were just unreal. We were fortunate to get some sunlight to illuminate the city while at the top (the forecast was for 70% rain most of the day, which would turn out to be gorgeous). The whole trek took us around 2 1/2 hours.After having lunch with J.T. on the Royal Mile mid-afternoon, Vivian and I hiked back towards and past Edinburgh Castle, as there was a particular spot I wanted to see. On Fountainbridge Road, there exists a brewery that is about to be demolished for another building. Before the brewery was there, it was a housing estalishment. Why does anyone care? Because that housing estalishment was the childhood abode of one Sir Sean Connery. It was interesting to see where the Mr. Bond grew up as a wee Scottish lad. There is a plaque that is normally there, but has been removed for the current construction and is supposed to be replaced once the new building is complete.After that quick stop, we looped around the west side of the Castle and into the Prince Street Gardens that sit in the middle of Edinburgh and got some great photos during that 20-30 minute walk, which led us back to to the train station.The evening was capped by dinner with the whole 16-member crew, which is officially parting ways tomorrow. Seven of us are headed to London, while the other nine are targeting France, specifically to visit Normandy.We have another 3 a.m. morning coming up, as our flight to London leaves @ 6:15 from here in Edinburgh. Right now, I'm pondering whether I'm just gonna stay up all night or not instead of trying to get&nbsp; three hours of sleep. The positive on this early flight is that we get to London around 7:30 and will have at least half a day to enjoy it. The bad part is we will be dead tired again. Hope you enjoy the pics on this one since I finally got a little sun to play with and turn out a little better eye-pleasing product for you. Sorry I didn't label some of the locales more specifically in some cases, but I just didn't know what everything was that I was shooting.

Well, I'm finally back...sorry for the delay, but we've been running pretty hard again and internet access has once again been a tad limited for us. But here is a big update for you...&nbsp;June 22 - Day 6 - Into The Scottish Highlands; Lookin' for NessieSunday morning we awoke in Dumbarton, Scotland, to find dismal, rainy skies and, unfortunately, that was not to change for the remainder of the day. Solid rain showers pelted us for pretty much the entire day as we drove north through some of the higher points in Scotland and then through the Loch Ness area.Simply gorgeous Scottish countryside past by our windows as we marched on. We passed through picturesque towns like Fort William and Fort Augustus. Fort Augustus borders Loch Ness to the south and it would be there we would begin our search for the area's most famous resident, Nessie. After striking out there, we continued to move north.We veered off the path a bit at one point, driving about 10 miles out of the way to see Glen Garry, a great spot for a photo. Then, it was on to a tour of Urquhart Castle, the ruins of which sit atop the western side of Loch Ness, providing a great view of that body of water. One thing I never realized about Loch Ness was that it is 23 miles long and about a mile wide. It's huge. I can see why finding Nessie is tough!Continuing to weather the rain, we wound our way even further north, finally coming to a halt at our headquarters in Inverness, which sits on the north side of Loch Ness. We went downtown to find a bite to eat and then retired for the night, hoping clearer skies would greet us on Monday morning.&nbsp;June 23 - Day 7 - Finding Ben Nevis; Then Cross CountryUpon arising Monday, we did, in fact, have much more promising skies outside and took that opportunity to backtrack on our route from Sunday on the west side of Loch Ness. We continued our search for Nessie, though I'm pretty sure I got a video of her at the castle on Monday (I wanted to&nbsp;post it here so you could watch for yourself, but it's taking WAY too long to upload).The real purpose for the backtrack was to go back to Ben Nevis, which is the tallest mountain in Scotland, standing at 4,406 feet. When we came through Sunday, the entire peak was covered in clouds, so we decided then to try to return if things looked better Monday.We took a ski tram up a sister peak and got a fantastic view from there of Fort William and surrounding areas. Ben Nevis was still hiding it's top from us, however, so we never really got a good look at the peak.From there we headed west pretty much non-stop for about three hours, finally landing in Dunfermline, Scotland, Monday night around 5 p.m. After checking in and rounding up some grub, we had a huge trip highlight - a visit to ASDA. For those of you who don't know what an ASDA is, try that store with the blue front and white letters. ASDA is Scotland's Wal-Mart.&nbsp;June 24 - Day 8 - St. Andrews &amp; The Old CourseAs most of you know, one of the biggest things on my agenda for this trip was to play The Old Course at St. Andrews. The oldest golf course in the world. Where the sport was invented. Need I say more? The following is an accounting of my day. Yes, I made it happen. It took work, but I did make it happen...3:00 a.m. - I awake from about a three-hour sleep to shower and leave for St. Andrews, Scotland, a simple drive from our current headquarters of Dunfermline.3:45 a.m. - I leave. The drive, as you would expect, was unadventerous. Though the sun does rise around 4:15 over here, Scots are no more up that early that we are. I see maybe five vehicle during my peaceful drive to St. Andrews via the M90 and A91 highways in eastern Scotland. The sun is rising and there is fog rolling over the Scottish countryside and farmland. I can smell success already.4:45 a.m. - I arrive at St. Andrews Links and am the first to park in the clubhouse parking lot. I feel like Clark Griswold at Wally World, but hopefully I won't have to hold up the security guard to ride the ride.4:50 a.m. - I walk up to the starter's hut, as instructed by the Royal &amp; Ancient GC, to get in line (excuse me, in the "queue") with other single golfers (from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee, no less). I am #4. Now, I feel very confident this round will happen. The weather looks solid. We're gonna play today, no doubt.6:10 a.m. - The starter, who is late (remember, Rolex is the official clock here), finally arrives to set the first tee time of the day, a 6:30 slot. He takes our names (our being about 30-40 people at this point) and starts working us into the daily tee sheet. For those of us renting clubs (I wasn't gonna lug them around over here for two weeks for one round), he gives us some lip about not having clubs and that that is key to playing the game they call golf here at the Old Course. I explain to him that I had called the R&amp;AGC Monday and they said I should see him first, then go rent the clubs once I have a tee time. Me and 3-4 other guys dart back over to the clubhouse (about a quarter mile away) and "hire" our clubs.6:55 a.m. - The starter, who is my best friend right now, calls two names over the loudspeaker - "Mr. Mitchell and Mr. Cade, please report to the starter" (remember, that's in authentic Scottish tongue). Mr. Mitchell, a former golfer at the University of Missouri, and I are inserted into the 7:30 a.m. tee time. That's right, I just walked on to The Old Course at St. Andrews. But there's still 35 minutes for them to change their minds, so let's hit the putting green and keep a low profile.7:20 a.m. - We are called to the #1 tee box (The Burn Hole). The gentleman on the tee box in R&amp;AGC garb, let's call him the assistant starter, goes over the guidelines for our group. He emphasizes speed of play (four hours is the goal) and that we will be watched like hawks all the way around the course. He then says the words that our music to our ears - "Gentlemen, the tee is yours."7:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (and we did finish pretty darn close to on the button) - I played one of the most enjoyable rounds of golf in my lifetime with three guys I just met, and a caddy guiding me all the way. I felt like I was playing the British Open, and it wasn't on a PS2.Tuesday's experience was everything I had expected and more. Playing the course that has more history than any other and then playing links golf were both enough to keep my adrenalin well above the levels needed to offset my lack of sleep. The weather was overcast, windy and about 55 degrees, exactly what you would expect at the Royal &amp; Ancient. I did pretty much everything you would need to to call the day complete, including a stellar sand shot on my very first attempt to escape one of those nasty pot bunkers. On hole #4 (Ginger Beer), I chased a 7-iron up to about 4 1/2 feet from about 50 yards away. The putter, which was kind to me all day, was used quite a bit from off the green. I had all kinds of trouble on the famous Road Hole (17), not only finding the road, but losing my provisional ball as well.My caddy? I was blessed there as well. With a caddyshack stocked full of young guns, I drew a true vet named Steve Jones. He has caddied for men's and women's tour players - most notably Eduardo Molinaro, a lesser-known but still a tour player. Here is an article (see bottom of page) from a couple years ago on Steve working with Eduardo. Oh, yeah, I also asked Steve who his favorite tour players were. I'll remain silent on who he said he didn't care for, but I think you all know.What did I shoot? Who cares? I'll say this - I did not play my best golf. I broke 100 and I recorded par on five holes, including two of the last three. On 18 (Tom Morris), the golfing gods reached down and touched me when, after my drive went left into the #1 fairway, I roped a 3-Wood 190 yards into a strong wind that plagued us on the back nine all day. The ball dropped gently about 20 feet pin high, left of the cup. Because of that, of course, I will play golf again.It was incredible. The entire experience layed out perfectly and I couldn't have asked for a better one. Some of the other members of our group came to St. Andrews a bit later in the morning and played the Jubilee Course (St. Andrews now has seven tracks). In the afternoon, we all enjoyed walking around the community of St. Andrews which is, in itself, something to behold from a historical standpoint.I'm tired now.
