Alghero, Italy

Our group spent the day travelling from Fertilia/Alghero to Castelsardo, stopping by Capocaccia to visit Grotto di Neptune.Neptune's grotto was this amazing area of limestone caves - 2km in total, of which only 800m were accessible to the public. These caves have been around as long as humans had inhabited the island, and have only been accessible by foot in the last 40-50 years.

Bosa, Italy

We spent two nights in Bosa...lovely little town, but absolutely DEAD over winter. Oh and it rained almost non-stop for the two days while we were there :(After our two days of mostly doing nothing in Bosa we drove back to Olbia via the mountains (by accident, rather than plan). Along the way we came across sheep being herded along the road, which reminded me of home (NZ). Unfortunately I don't have pictures of the sheep - I was driving, and that in itself was a challenge on its own!

Olbia, Italy

Welcome to Olbia, where the temperature during the winter is around 12-15 degrees celsius. It looks promising after the single-digit temperatures we'd been experiencing in London over the past few weeks (it even managed to snow!). We picked up our rental car and headed into Olbia town. Unfortunately, we arrived after 1pm, which meant that nothing was open (it took us 4 days to adjust to the 9-1, 4-8 hours). The funniest tale of the trip happened on the first day...we went into a small cafe and ordered some drinks. Larissa ordered a "latte", assuming that it was going to be coffee. The waiter was slightly bemused by this request and became even more so after Larissa insisted on having her latte "with milk", to which the waiter asked if she wanted her latter hot or cold. Little did we know that "latte" is just "milk", so the waiter later emerged with a glass of hot, frothy milk! What made it even funnier was that the small Lonely Planet guide to Italian phrasebook we had specifically warned about ordering just a "latte"!After our escapades in Olbia we headed to our accommodation in Fertilia, on the other side of the island. This was going to be our base for NYE in Alghero.

Ceuta, Morocco

Ceuta. Spanish Morocco, and the start of my 36 hour nightmare.I originally planned on going from Ceuta to Malaga via ferry but apparently no ferries went during winter (thanks for not telling me that, Lonely Planet!). In fact, the weather was bad enough to cancel all ferries scheduled for travel to and from Algeciras. I had booked a night's accommodation in Malaga and not Ceuta, so I spent the night on the floor of the ferry terminal (note: I don't sleep well, if at all, on hard floors).Friday morning comes around and so too do hundreds of stranded travellers. We're told that there's a ferry leaving at 11am, and there's a huge rush to get tickets. A friend and I start queueing to board at 9am, and it isn't until 2pm that we actually get onto the ferry! My flight leaves Malaga at 8:50pm, so I need to be there at around 7pm. I know it takes 2.5-3 hours on the bus from Algeciras to Malaga, so that means I need to leave Algeciras at about 4pm. Thankfully I'm on the fast ferry and it takes only an hour to cross the 14km to mainland Spain. By the time I get off the ferry and through customs it's about 3:30pm, so I leg it over to the bus station, only to find that there's a queue of about 100 people in front of me all wanting tickets to the 3:45pm bus to Malaga! Eventually I manage to get a bus ticket, but the earliest I can get is 6:45pm, arriving in Malaga around 9:30pm!! This obviously isn't going to do, so I manage to find 3 others who need to go to Malaga, and we take a taxi to Marabella (about 2/3 the way), and then an airport shuttle to Malaga airport. I arrive at the airport at 7pm, well chuffed that I had made it on time and check in, only to find out 30 minutes later that the flight has been delayed until 10:15pm! Eventually the plane leaves and I land at Gatwick airport. Unfortunately, there are no more trains going to Balham (my local station), so I have to take two trains to Clapham junction and then a taxi from there to my place. All in all, not a pleasant experience coming back from Morocco. For those planning on going, make sure you leave plenty of time between when you're thinking of taking the ferry and when you actually fly out!

Tetouan, Morocco

Tetouan is a small town 1 hour away by bus. A few people on the bus said it was quite a dangerous city to be alone in, and after a little while I could see why! And to think I was going to spend a night there too! However, in the 2 hours I spent in the city I bought a Moroccan rug and saw how they made their robes (by hand).

Tangier, Morocco

Welcome to Morocco, where the local currency is Dirhams, they speak Moroccan Arabic, French, some Spanish, a little Dutch and even less English.When I first headed out of Tangier's port I noticed how run down everything was. Upon closer inspection I saw that it was mostly the construction of new buildings, pavements, gardens etc. Tangier is a city that's growing fast. It's an important part of Morocco's economy as its handily situated at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, from the Atlantic Ocean, and so is the first port of call for ships bound for the rest of Africa and southern Europe.

Algeciras, Spain

Ahh, Algeciras (pronounced "Al-je-thee-ras"), the southern most tip of Spain. Did you know that there absolutely nothing to do in the main part of Algeciras? I found that out first hand! The main business for town/city is for ferries to and from Morocco.If I had known that earlier I would have skipped the overnight accommodation in Algeciras and gone straight to Tangier! Actually, come to think of it I would have skipped the accommodation in Malaga as well and saved myself some money.

Malaga, Spain

I flew from London Stansted to Malaga and was surprised to hear the pilot announce that the outside temperature was 15 degrees celsius! I guess the warmer climate is why lots of old people like to head to the Costa Del Sol (there were about 4 people in wheelchairs boarding the plane).I spent only one night in Malaga, as it was only a stopover to Algeciras and then to Tangier, Morocco.
