Lost Hills, California, United States

Our first day took us thru the San Joaquin Valley, lots of grape vines, almond trees, cherry trees, sod and lots of other vegetations we couldn't name. The almond trees are in bloom. We didn't drive much since we got a late start from home.
Taos, New Mexico, United States

There are two different roads leading off to Taos according to the
hotel clerk. One is scenery with curves and the other is freeway. We
head out to the curvy road thinking it was like the one to the
Gila's Caves. I was wrong. This road had generous curves and not u
turns. And the scene was beautiful with lots of ranchos with herds of
cows and/or horses and even sheep rancho. Patches of snow, tall
pine and cottonwood trees covered the ground. This is the read
where Catholic pilgrims walk during Good Friday to visit Santuario
de Chimayo, known for its healing dirt. We pass historic churches
weaving shops and artists studios. One important thing missing are
rest stops.

Our first stop at Taos is the visitors center. Here we are told the
pueblo is closed for six weeks, apparently this is the yearly time
it's closed to the public. I'm very disappointed
since it's the main reason for making this drive. Oh, well,
at least there is the ranchos and the plaza to see. The visitors
clerk gives us other suggestions. So off we go to the Rio
Grande Gorge and Bridge. The bridge is the 2nd highest of its kind in
the u.s.. Jack wants to visit Kt Karsons' house and off we go, a little
bit of frontier history.

Return to Santa Fe

On our way out we visit the ranchos, lots of adobe old houses and San
Francisco de Asis Church. The main and side altar is made of wood. The
crucifix on the main alter is carved and painted. The crucifix is surrounded by
painted Indian designs. The side alter has saints carved with Indian
designs.

Our return trip was not supposed to be scenic remember? Wrong.
The highway meandered along the Rio Grande with beautiful snow covered
top mountains as backdrop.

Back in Santa Fe, we visit The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, oh how I wish I
could paint. Then off to the Santa Fe Outlets and yes there is a
Coach store. I told Jack not to leave me alone and to NOT let me buy.
Yes we made it safely out of the mall without spending a dime.

So today is Wed the 26th and
we are on our way to Albuquerque. On our way up here we cruised the city and
with the exception of museums I don't think we are interested in
the rest of the attractions. We are both afraid of heights for a
balloon ride! So I hope it's a kick back type of day.
Our flight leaves at 10:50 am. We are leaving the laptop at home so it's back to the library for this one or I might have to wait till we return home to type in our adventures. I'm glad we are going to miss all this cold wind and hope we are not heading into worse weather. Toby is once again spending time with his grandparents in San Francisco. He loves his tortillas.
Twin Falls, Idaho, United States

Boy did we get lost today, 20 miles worth of lost and according to Jack $5.00 worth of gas. I wanted to stop off to see the Shoshone Falls and from there we were headed to our motel which was just across the freeway but we both thought it was further down the road and entered the freeway looking for the exit. We were already on it!

Anyway let me start at the beginning. It snowed overnight at west Yellowstone and the road looked like a xmas postcard. About 10 miles into Idaho the snow soon disappeared as well as the mountains and pine trees. The scenery alternated between dry lands and green agricultural lands. We stopped at a geological rest stop to see the volcanic rocks that surrounds it.

We finally arrived at the falls mid afternoon after driving along the Snake River and crossed a bridge which overlooked the river and the gorge. As we started the drive down the road we saw a series of falls very similar to the horse shoe fall in Canada, just a little smaller. After parking we walked for a closer view and to my surprise saw a beautiful rainbow vertical to the falls, not only one but two rainbows!
West Yellowstone, Montana, United States

We finally made it to the Museum of the Rockies at Montana State University (MSU). It was originally stared by a woman Dr. in the '50s. It houses a Planetarium, Dinosaur, Native Americans, Early Montana history and on the 2nd level it has exhibits that change. Now it's exhibiting a graphic designer who was well known from the 30's to 50's, sorry forgot his name. Prior to the the museum we had to take another look at the lot and Jack's grandparents original house. He had to make the old crab apple was still standing!

Bozeman to West Yellowstone is about 90 miles and we had plenty of time to stop and smell the flower. Most of the drive was next to the Gallatin River where the movie A River Runs Through It was filmed. We could see patches of snow on the ground and more snow progressing as we went higher in elevation. We detoured into Big Sky ski resort. It was built by news anchor Chet Huntley of the Huntley Brinkley evening television news when we were kids. The resort is surrounded by high end houses I'm sure it's very pricey to live there. 20 miles from west Yellowstone we saw temporary road signs cautioning us for buffalo crossings and sure enough we ran into a couple of them just leisurely strolling up the road we thought we were in el Salvador. Jack didn't want to stop to take a picture, he thought them might charge us, so he slowed down. A couple of pictures came out okay but on one I have only the rear end :). Further down the road we saw a family of four, two adults and two babies. They were out by the side of the road and not under the pines. We think maybe they wanted to warm up in the sun. And closer to town two more just "chilling" (laying down) on the snow.

Once in town we walked to the shops and it felt very strange without all the tourist that are normally here in the summer, the only time we have come. It felt so strange I couldn't shop...spend money...well I got over it and did manage to spend a little. Once in our room it started to lightly snow and within 15 minutes the flakes grew larger and larger....during our travels we had managed to miss winter but it finally caught up to us. I only hope we don't have to shovel out the truck tomorrow!
