Athens, Attica, Greece

After a brief but fun stay in Athens, we leave for the United States tomorrow.  .   Naxos was fantastic.  The town of Naxos where we stayed is dominated by an old castle surrounded by narrow alleyways and ruins, as well as trendy shops.  On our last night we visited the Olive Tree, a Greek-style cafe for some live music.  Katherine started to clap when the music began, her first clapping session.  It was truly an amazing night.The beaches were beautiful and the food fresh and good.  Greek port towns are truly amazing places.  We will definitely return, perhaps for a longer time.Here are some pictures of our last days on this mediterranean odyssey.

Naxos, Cyclades, Greece

We arrived here in Naxos---a beautiful island, not as touristy as Santorini but just as beautiful. We are celebrating our second wedding anniversary tonight with a wonderful seafood dinner. Our hotel is close to the beach, which we plan to go to tomorrow.

Santorini, Greece

We went on a tour of the island today, starting off with the prehistoric museum, full of perfectly preserved artifacts from the village of Akrotiri, which was destroyed in the volcano eruption in 1650. Unfortunately, we could not see the actual site, as it is closed to the public. We went to the highest point of the island, and saw a quiant village. We also went to a black sand beach for a couple of hours. James and Katherine were put off by the hot sand and cold water, but Jenny jumped right in and swam in Homer's wine dark sea. We ended the tour at a winery. Santorini is blessed with rich soil from the volcano (which is still active and last erupted in 1950) and produces excellent wine. We ended the evening with a nice dinner on a rooftop terrace overlooking the main city. This is truly paradise.

Santorini, Greece

We have finally arrived in Santorini.  We are staying at a hotel that has a magnificant view of the caldera which is the watery center of the island.  Santorini was once almost circular but a massive volcanic explosion around 1500 B.C.  blasted the center of the island and destroyed a thriving civilization as well, and also the Minoan Culture in Crete.  It may have also provided the basis for the legend of Atlantis since Plato may have been inspired by the events on Santorini. Atlantis or not, the island is spectacular and the sunsets unbelievable.  Thira is beautiful and a happening place full of pita shops and tavernas.  Jenny and Katherine are enjoying the island and tomorrow we are going on a tour of several towns and visiitng the island's famous black sand beaches.

Santorini, Greece

We are almost at Santorini, one of the most beautiful islands in Greece. To get there, you go by ferry. It's an 8 hour trip, but very comfortable. These ferries are amazing machines. Will write more later.

We made it to Athens in one piece, and so did our luggage. We are staying in a nice hotel moments away from the Acropolis. We went out to eat around Monastiraki area and had some decliscious souvlaki and enjoyed looking at the ruins in the moonlight. We are going to see the main attractions tomorrow, and then Saturday bright and early, we leave for Santorini.

Rome, Italy

We are leaving Italy today after 10 glorious days. We spent 5 full days in Rome. We went to the Pantheon, the best preserved Roman temple in Italy, the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Vatican City (which was beautiful, but exhausting) and the Spanish steps and Trevi Fountain(where were threw coins in to ensure that we come back to Rome). We also went to the Capuchin cryps, where the monks created macabre but beautiful art from the bones of their deceased. We had many wonderful meals there, and will miss it, but we are looking forward to Greece.

Rome, Lazio, Italy

We had a great last day in Florence yesterday, seeing the inside of the Duomo cathedral, the Uffizzi Gallery, where we saw such masterpieces as Botticelli's Birth of Venus, and then to the church of Santa Croce. The church is a who's who of Renaissance tombs. Michaelangelo is buried there, along with Machiavelli and Rossinni. We arrived in Rome this afternoon and are ready to go out and explore the city.

Florence, Tuscany, Italy

We saw Leonardo's Last Supper painting in Milan yesterday morning and made it to Florence in the afternoon, and are entranced with this lovely medieval city. We are in a great location, across from the San Lorenzo church and a block away from the famous Duomo cathedral. Today we went to see Michaelangelo's famous David sculpture at the Galleria della Academia, and we also saw the famous Baptistry. We are going to see the Uffizzi gallery tomorrow and the interior of the Duomo. There is so much to see in this city it is almost overwhelming. We might just have to make another trip back! The food is delicious, especially the gelato.
