Great Ocean Road, Australia

We headed further south on the Princes highway until we hit Warrnambool where we stayed at the local campsite. Ben and I also visited the local council offices after both managing to get parking tickets costing us fifty dollars each and another days budget. The next day were off for a date with The Great Ocean Road probably the most Iconic stretch of road in Australia and something I had really been looking forward to. At first the road actually deviated inland before returning at the Bay of Islands which was our first taster into the stunning scenery to come. The Bay of Islands was a series of rock stacks left stranded inside a huge bay due to erosion. Not to far away there was a series of stops to take in different, spectacular rock formations such as the Grotto, Arch and the semi collapsed London Bridge. A little further on was another nice stop at the Loch Ard Gorge, named after a ship of the same name was shipwrecked here that had a stunning little beach covered in yellow / orange hued sand in which the only two survivors of the wreck had washed ashore.Another set of iconic rock formations was the 12 Apostles. The stacks which now only number six due to erosion stood abandoned by the mainland with the raging sea relentlessly trying to further dwindle the number of Apostles still standing. The Apostles are viewed on a series of walkways that take you to different vantage points, very very touristy but another must see Aussie icon nonetheless. <img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1205298360.london-bridge.jpg" width="270" height="180"><img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1205298360.loch-ard-gorge.jpg" width="270" height="180">After having a slight rock overindulgence the road again took an inland route up and over the hills around the Great Otway National Park. The rugged drive here amongst the tall forests was very eye-pleasing and the drive itself with all its twists and turns was pretty fun as well. The drive rejoined the coast and this was the stretch that you see on all the brochures, the two lane road winding against cliffs next to the Southern Ocean. We were going to spend the night in Lorne but we passed a campsite about 20km before hand that was situated in a spectacular valley right on the beach. After chasing down Ben who was ignoring all our tooting in the other van we made a U-turn and were quickly pitched up in the campground. Next to the campsite was a huge sheer cliff with a river running below out towards the ocean. We decided to partake in an early morning hike the next day and so were up at dawn and heading into the wilderness. The hike itself was a three hour trek taking us along the river to a set a falls and then taking us up the cliffs. The pinnacle was an awesome view overlooking the valley and our campsite below. <img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1205298360.ocean-road-camp.jpg" width="180" height="270"><img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1205298360.2-12-apostles-.jpg" width="180" height="270"><img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1205298360.2-great-ocean-road.jpg" width="180" height="270">After the hike we snuck back into the campsite and showered up before heading to Lorne. Lorne is quite a funky little town about 40km south of Geelong and would have deserved a stay in itself. We stayed here for lunch before heading out to finish the rest of the trip towards Melbourne. On route we managed to spot a wild Koala, which was to be the only Koala we would spot in the wild on this trip. Lazy, lazy animals. The last real stop of importance was the legendary Bells Beach. A true surfing Mecca. They were gearing up for the Billabong Pro in little under a week. The surf was pumping in two specific spots, with huge clean swells, whilst a number of the pros warmed up for the coming comp. There were some awesome surfers there. I could have sat and watched the waves and surfers attacking them for hours.<img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1205298360.2-bells-beach.jpg" width="270" height="180"><img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1205298360.1-bells-beach.jpg" width="270" height="180">The heat at Bells was pretty sweltering with a huge warm gusty wind bearing down on us so we headed into nearby Torquay to do some shopping at the surf factory outlets. Then we passed through Geelong and into Melbourne following Ben with his Sat Nav.

Port Augusta, Australia

After navigating the Lincoln Highway we reached Port Augusta at the tip of the Spencer Gulf. Port Augusta is a major crossroads destination with roads leading to Western Australian, North to Alice Springs, South to Adelaide and East into NSW. We spent a couple of hours wandering around town picking up some more supplies and trying a spot of fishing on the local wharf. From town we had heard of a free camping area a few kilometers to the south in a national park by the water. From the highway we diverted onto a gravel road winding its was closer to the gulf before we reached our destination. The site was quite barren except for a few trees and the most basic of toilet blocks. It did however have a small jetty lining the banks of a tidal water way, which was a relaxing place to read a book. With the tide well and truly out we decided to search for open seas traversing the muddy flats, stumbling across wild mangrove plants and finding hundreds of giant crab shells. Just before the sun set we had an impromptu game of "beach cricket" with new gear we had brought in Port Augusta, and then retired back into our tents for the night. The next day we awoke for breakfast and were joined by a group of kangaroos who were at a nearby house, being fed breakfast by the owner.

Streaky Bay, Australia

Streaky Bay was the chance to put the feet up after the taxing trip across the Nullabor. Ben's family had recommended Streaky Bay, as they had visited here in the past and loved it. We pitched our tents in the local grounds that were well situated right on the bay itself. The first port of call was the nice local pub - the mainstay and focal point of the town, and rightfully so. We treated ourselves to a pub meal and a couple of pints and then headed round to the bottle store to pick up a box of cheap cask wine. That night Mark and I sat by the water, looking up a the stars until we had again ran dry in the drinks department. The next day after being rudely awoken by a sunny day (hangover, tents and sun don't mix) we spent the day chilling out, venturing down to the jetty, the boys purchased some fishing equipment from the local store, and armed with some local knowledge proceeded to spend the entire day catching one eatable fish between them, whilst I spent the day lazy about the wharf and campsite reading my book. That night Canada and I were back down on the waterfront repeating the last nights efforts.

Great Australian Bight, Australia

We had planned to drive from Esperance to Norseman at the start of the infamous Nullarbour Plain and the start of the 2700km Eyre Highway, camp up for the night and then start the long drive the next day. But once underway we were in Norseman at a relatively early time and decided to make some inroads across the plain. The plain is one of those mind numbing epic journeys and we were told to expect a whole lot of nothing, but truth be told it wasn't as barren as I had previously thought. The extra shrubbery tried to compensate in vain for the distinct lack of wild life, We had also been told we would see loads of kangaroos but the only Roos we came across hadn't stopped, looked and listened and had seen better days. We passed through many interestingly named towns before hitting the first "landmark" of sorts, which was the signpost marking the start of 90 mile straight. The straight is one of the worlds longest stretches of straight road and lasts for a mind numbing 145kms. At first its a novelty until about 20kms in and its just becomes tedious to say the least. No bends and nothing to take your interest outside and then our one saviour - the radio blew a fuse and we were left tuneless. Eventually after an hour or so we had a brain wave and hooked up Marks mini speakers to his Ipod, but it was only going to be a matter of time before the batteries died. <img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203993540.longest-straight.jpg" width="270" height="180"><img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203993540.nullarbor-camp.jpg" width="270" height="180">We made it a fair distance considering we were originally only going to stop in Norseman and with the light about to fade and the threat of hitting one of the nocturnal Roos at 100km with no bumper bar, we wisely decided to camp just outside of Madura at a lonely, facility-less truck stop. We quickly set up camp on the barren landscape with the smell of decaying carcasses wafting in the air and grabbed a quick improvised meal. Just as the sunset I went off to the road to take a couple of photos. It was a pretty surreal feeling, with the road vanishing into the horizon and not another car in sight. Once back in the tent it was a fairly airy feeling as it felt like some B-grade horror movie where a deluded nut case would appear from the darkness and rip us to threads in our sleep. <img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203993540.nullarbor-dusk.jpg" width="270" height="180"><img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203993540.nullarbor-highway.jpg" width="270" height="180">Considering there wasn't really much to do at our designated campsite we decided pretty much woke up, put the tents in the car and hit the road. Our next stop was a welcome petrol stop at Eucla and also a chance to replace the blown fuse on the radio and get our offical certificates for crossing the plain - yahoo. Just After Eucla we passed over our first state border and we were now in South Australia. A little further on was the the chance to stretch the legs again and take in the sheer orange hued cliffs of the Great Australian Bight that disappeared into the vast blue expanse of the Southern Ocean. A swift 480km later and after slightly losing our minds we had reached Ceduna which marked the end of our Nullarbor trek. An Icy cold beer was a must at a local pub before we drove the extra 100km down to Streaky Bay where we intended to stay out of the cars as much a possible.

Esperance, Australia

We managed to find a pretty good campsite in Esperance right on the ocean front. Most of out time in Esperance was fairly overcast and blustery, so we didn't really get a chance to make use of the awesome beaches down here. Neither did we take enough time to explore to explore Cape Le Grand, which I regret now as it is meant to have some pretty spectacular scenery. One of Esperances main features is the massive jetty that arches into the Esperance bay of Isles and a couple of the local sea lions like to make an appearance there most days. Just on the outskirts of town is the Pink Lake, which isn't that pink - I've seen far pinker lakes than that in Bolivia.On our first night in town we decided to hit the local pub and got to talking to a few of the locals before heading off into another section of the bar that was more of a nightclub managing to leave very late in the morning.On the last day before heading out of Esperance we drove the 36km round circuit of the Great Ocean Drive not to be mistaken with the Great Ocean Road we would be tackling later on in the trip. The drive produced some wonderful ocean vistas from atop the many lookou point scattered along the drive.

Denmark, Australia

With a short but sweet stay in Margaret River and a more organized departure we set off on a two day drive towards Esperance. It was to be yet another gorgeous drive winding us through a huge section of giant Karri Trees. The journey took us down into quaint Pemberton, deep within Karri territory. After lunch here we headed to the Gloucester Tree, which you can climb via a spiraling ladder that ascends 60 meters into the canopy. The tree is one of a collection that were used in the past to spot forrest fires. We were far too lazy to climb the tree as we had planned to climb another section later. We were charged $10 per car to enter the national park and we had two. So in hindsight we could have saved us $10 for more beer by ditching one of the cars. <img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203734880.2-southern-forests-.jpg" width="270" height="180"><img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203734880.4-southern-forests-.jpg" width="270" height="180">From Pemberton we headed down towards Walpole with the with the weather taking a turn for the worse. We had all thought that our trek across Australia was going to be a sweltering affair but the nights were very cold down south as we soon found out with our lack of warm clothing options. We started camping out in some free camping spots which would become a mainstay of our trip and I even saw my first alive, wild kangaroo (all previous encounters with the elusive Roos had been with road kill specimens). Just outside of Walpole we headed to the famous tree top walk among the giant tingle trees. Here we took a series of platforms climbing into the canopy of the trees and taking us for a 40 meter elevated trek. The platforms are designed to gently sway in the breeze to mimick life in the tree tops. Back down on the ground we took a trek through the bases of the trees some as large as 16 meters round. We also managed to spot a little Woylie a local marsupial.<img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203734880.tree-top-walk.jpg" width="270" height="180"><img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203734880.tingle-tree.jpg" height="180" width="270">After this we headed into Denmark and then onto West Cape Howe National Park. Our destination was an off the beaten track spot called Shelley Beach. The drive was over a series of step gravel roads but the effort was well worth it as we advanced over the ridge to a stunning location set below the cliffs, surrounded by greenery and a ragging aqua blue ocean. The only downfall of the place was there was a huge gail blowing. That night we partook in a few games of cards whilst finishing off a few odd bottle of spirits that I had brought with me form my once grand collection back in Perth. <img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203734880.shelleyxs-beach.jpg" width="270" height="180"><img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203734880.southern-coast.jpg" width="270" height="180">The next day we headed back up the hillside, almost hitting a stray kangaroo and headed towards Albany, where we stopped for lunch. After this we made a final push towards Esperance.

Margaret River, Australia

Well this is I suppose where the great coast to coast journey really begins. Traveling with my good friend and estemmed drinking buddy for the last 8 months Mark a.k.a. Canada the days very quickly counted down until our final night in Perth. A quiet night was planned as we had our farewell drinks at The Saint on sunday (thanks to all those that showed up for a final few beers), but a few friends turned into a few more and a few bottles of vodka turned into a few more. The next day we awoke with huge hangovers and a fear that we were in no way ready to leave, I had to head out to the Swan Valley to visit my family to say farewell and thanks. With said farewells completed I jumped into the car that refused to fire and the day seemed to be rolling incontrolably downwards at pace. As fate would have it I had brought the car from my uncle and at the time I was parked outside his mechanical shop. After an hour the fault was found and fixed with a healthy dose of electrical tape. So actually I think I was quite lucky it had broken down here rather than two weeks or so when we were on the Nallarbour Plain. That would have sucked for sure.I eventually got home after mid day and then started to pack, as true to form hadn't taken the time to do so in the previous week. In the end we both lost patience and threw everything into the car, vowing to sort it out once we were down south. Our good mate Ceri gave us a call to say he had some going away presents for us so we had to make the trek into Perth CDB with car fully laden, eating up another hour. And then we were on the road. But only a far as Freo, a mere 20km down the road. Here we meet up with Emma, another partner in crime over the last 6 months for a beer, despite our hangovers at the Little Creature Brewery. As we sipped back on our final pints it was nearing 4pm and there was serious talk about staying put in a hostel and having another final night out. To my credit I finally put my foot down, we leaving and so further south we headed. We passed all the usual suspects, Mundurah, Bunbury and Capel until we passed into untrodden territory trying to beat the fading sun. After 3 hours we finally pulled up to the local pub in Margaret River where we would end up until closing time. Setting up tents both drunk and in the dark is awesome fun and I would reccomend it to all serious campers. The sorting out of the car would have to wait.The next day we picked up a few vital supplies and then headed on a tour of the region starting at the beach at the famous Margaret River break. The waves even for off season were pretty big and the sets were nice and clean - Impressive. There were about twenty or so surfers out at the time taking on the waves. After this we headed further south through the mix of wooded forests and rolling green land to Augusta and then onto Cape Leeuwin to visit the most south-westerly point of Australia and also the spot where the Indian and Southern Oceans join forces. Here the giant lighthouse stood strong against the roaring winds.<img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203560400.margaret-river.jpg" width="270 HEIGHT=180"><img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1203560400.1-margaret-river.jpg" width="270 HEIGHT=180">The next day we spent the morning exploring the local area and also visiting the Lake Cave, one of many massive caves in Margaret River. We took the tour deep down into the cave which was first discovered in 1867 and soon enough we were surround by a stunning crystal like cave system. The lake in the middle served to dramatically mirror the surrounds and highlight the feature point of the cave the suspended table, which is a massive column of calcite weighing in excess of five tonnes that seems to hang precariously from the ceiling, defying gravity and hovering just a few centimetres above the lake. The caves were very well presented by the tour guide and a series of flattering lights. Well worth the $17 spent.That evening we went and visited Ben's (who was traveling with us) Mother and Cousin at their rented villa in a secluded location, enjoying plenty of the local wine and a good BBQ.

Terrigal, Newcastle and Port Macquarie, Australia

Managing to weave our way out of Sydney, we were soon back making steady progress up the Pacific Highway leaving behind some pretty good times as well as a few unpaid highway toll fines. The weather was teasing us with another dance of off again on again sunshine but it was nice to be back in the drivers seat. We had left leaving Sydney to a little later in the day and didn't intend on making a lot of progress, instead electing to ease ourselves back into the lifestyle. We found a nice little campsite in a small town called Terrigal right by the water and spent the remainder of the day relaxing. Well that was the plan until I decided that I'd well and truly overindulged on the good life back in Sydney and that I must be punished with a grueling fifteen minute run - Gotta start somewhere right. That was to be my first and last run of this road trip. The sun setting over the water and hills on the horizon was very camera friendly and after snapping a few shots returned back to the campsite to feed the machine.The next day after only about 80 kms we were heading into Newcastle. We parked up on Wharf Road on the eastern tip near to the local beaches. There was a car show of shorts on the wharf featuring a range of about 30 different Corvettes, all sparkling in the sun with their colorful candy paint jobs and guarded by their their lovesick post forty year old owners. During my mid life crisis I think I'll have a Corvette too.From the Wharf we we headed up to Nobbys beach right on the point and had a wander around before returning to the car and heading to the more sheltered Newcastle Beach. We checked out the Ocean Baths on Shortland Esplenade and clambered along the rocks to check out the surfers riding the clean swells. We spent an hour or so on the beach before the weather decided to pack up and we followed suit. Our next port of call was another 130 kms up the coast to a place called Seal Rocks on the northern end of the Myall Lakes National Park. I was quite surprised when we got there that there were so many holidayers about. It was quite crowded and pricey to stay in the campsites right on the beach in the village so we headed back to another Holiday Park about five minutes down the road. The threatening weather had now engulfed us so we made pretty good use of the campsites gaming room, especially the Ping Pong table that would lead to a series of epic games over the next couple of days. During breaks in the weather we would head down to the cove, with its laid back holiday vibe, which I really liked. It had a more family oriented beach with small swells before a gentle rocky outcrop lead you round to a more open beach where the local surfers were making the most of the swells. We also took the drive about 15 minutes away to the local lighthouse situated atop of a steep point at smokey cape. Back at the campsite we had a couple more really boozy nights playing cards in the BBQ area and also fielded a few questions from our campsite neighbours about the traveling disco ball, thinking that we might be a little camp ourselves. We had intended on really taking out time on this last stretch of the trip but the weather was really conspiring against us. After saying farewell to Seal Rocks we quickly found ourselves in Port Macquarie. Our first impressions were "Boring" I think due mainly to the frustration with the weather. We almost just move straight on to our next stop but decided to hang about and find a campsite for the night. The campsite was a really green earthy sort of place, with a great common area in the middle for cooking and hanging out. Canada and I had been getting on each others nerves a bit over the last couple of days and ended up doing our own things for the day. I took the car for a drive around the beaches overlooking the South Pacific. Each beach had its own unique character and I was now glad that we had give the "Port" some more time. I ended up at the lighthouse about 10km down pacific drive. The wind here was pretty immense and most of the onlookers didn't bother to leave the comfort of their cars. I ventured out for a few moments for some really rugged views of the rocky coastline and wind swept ocean. From the lighthouse I headed back to the point overlooking Town Beach and watched the surfers riding the incoming waves as dusk set in. Canada and I run into each other again at the local bottle shop! having both purchased a box of wine - so it was business as usual that night with a few more card games and a few wines. The next day before we left the Port we headed down to the Breakwall at the Harbor entrance, which has been transformed into a people galley. The rocks along the Breakwall have been colorfully painted with pictures, poems and odes from various people, creating and open air gallery of works ranging from crass to moving pieces of art.

We headed down the coast to Mt Gambier where there were a couple of good focal points for us to take in. The first was the stunning Blue Lake. The name itself doesn't really do it justice. The lake sits inside a 3.6km round crater with step slopes down the crater to the water. It looks very refreshing. Mt Gambier is also home to a number a giant sink holes and caves. We visited the Umpherston Sinkhole which is pretty central. The huge crater like hole has a narrow stairwell leading downwards and a plush terraced garden or eden has been created below. At night you can come down and feed the possums which nest in the craggy limestone walls.<img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1205125740.1-mt-gambier-sink-hole.jpg" width="270" height="180"><img src="http://images.travelpod.com/users/jag/australia.1205125740.blue-lake.jpg" width="270" height="180">After Mt Gabier we headed down to a pretty little town called Nelson a little further south, the boys jumped out and got some directions for good camping, which is abundant in this area and some bait for the newly aquired fishing lines. I had grown really close to the comfort of the shot gun seat by this stage and refused to get out of the car as the guys questioned the local information kiosk. Then we headed into the Lower Glenelg National Park to a secluded spot on the river I suddenly sprung to life. Wow this place a sight. It was the typical boy scout scenerio, with tall pines shading the dirt banks which flowed down to the jetty standing firm as the river cut its course from left to right. We spent a couple of days here just relaxing and fishing off the small jetty.
