Merida, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

We arrived in Merida with big plans of touring the city and seeing some live music, it is a key spot to see the mariachi bands. On the 28th we travelled to Dzibilchaltun. This site, in stark contrast to chichen Itza which was grand and seemed centered around intellectualism and warfare, seemed more peaceful and agricultural. On the 29th we travelled to Uxmal
Chichén Itzá, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

We arrived late in Piste and could only find nasty looking rooms so we went to the more touristy hotels near the entrance to Chichen Itza to find a decent room and be near the Mayan site so we could get there as soon as the park opened in the morning. We stayed atr the pyramide hotel and opted to sling a hammock and sleep outside rather than take a room. This seemed like a brilliant and money-saving idea untill we realised the mosquitoes were rampant and we had to construct a bizzare structure using mosquito nets to protect us. As normal mosquito nets arent designed to be used with hammocks, the strings stop them draping to the floor, it involved about an hour of scheming and construction. We got up and were waiting at the entry gate to the site before they opened at 8 and we entered with only 6 other people. This was such a good move as we got to see some of the park without the crowds and take some great photos. By 10 the park was heaving with thousands of people and felt more like a zoo than a historical site. Chichen Itza was established around 300 AD by the Mayans and was the key city in the terminal classic period. We latched onto a guided tour and learned some amazing facts about the site and the mayan culture. There were a few specific points in the city where you could clap your hands and due to the arrangement of the surrounding buildings the reverberating echo would sound like anh eagle cry. As well as acoustic architecture there were
Valladolid, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

We took a colectivo from Valladolid to the cenotes. Cenote Dzitnup is a pool of crystal clear water in an underground cave where the roof is covered with amazing stalacmite formations and light streams in from a hole in the centre of the roof in a spectacular beam. You enter the cave through a cramped tunnel and it is truly spectacular. You can swim in the cool water and look up at the crazy vaulted cave roof. We arrived when the sun was going down so unfortunately I could not capture the beauty on photo due to the lighting. Cenote Samula is a similar underground pool of crystal clear water but the roof of the cave is relatively smooth without the amazing formations of Dzitnup. What makes this cave special, however, is that a large tree is growing at ground level beside the hole at the centre of the roof of the cave and its roots fall through the opening and stretch down about 20 metres to draw water from the pool beneath.
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

We flew into Cancun on christmas eve and after arriving with big plans of what to do that night went to our hotel and promptly fell asleep. On Christmas day morning we went to the beach for sunrise and then took the ferry to Isla Mujeres where we spent the day enjoying the beaches and snorkelling. We returned to Cancun on the sunset ferry and wandered round the city and the parque de las palapas market. We expected to find some sort of social or religious event happening in the streets or in a church or square, being christmas and all, but nothing was to be found as all the locals were at home with their famillies.
