New Delhi, India

Urgh, tired!Getting into Delhi and finding somewhere to sleep is not difficult at all. Next person that wants to organise it before hand... don't bother. I suppose it's a good idea in the high season, but not from a security point of view.As you pass through immigration there's a pre-paid taxi booth on the left. I used that, got a taxi to Paharganj with a friendly driver called Ramish (passing the 'Yes Please Cottage') and walked to Hotel Vivek. The only rooms they had were 1000 rps or more, I'm not budgeting for that, so I headed for Hotel Star Palace. They were full (though I suspect his reluctance to help was also cos it was 2am, cold and he was tucked up in bed) but I was offered a room at their sister hotel, Star View. Whatever. I trundled back up the road the way I'd just come, passing the dude I'd just bought toilet paper off, and soon I was in bed. Under 2 blankets. Who would've thought I'd ever be cold in Delhi. Last time I was here it was 40C. Now it's 10C in the morning, up to about 15 during the day.So, slept quite well until about 7am when some started drilling in the wall next to my head. I kept sleeping, but it must have disturbed me quite a bit since I then had a strange dream about Rygel from Farscape, Chewbacca, Princess Peaches from Mario, and a nice friendly lady who I think was Georgina Chase's mum. We were in a castle, either trying to break out or break in. Very bizarre.Got up at 10 in the hopes of a hot shower, but the tap only dripped. Had a brief cold one instead. Brrr.Then out to change money and get food. Nice aloo parantha with a lump of lime pickle. Yey. Changing money involved waiting around for a while while the TV blared behind me. I never thought I'd hear a news report done to backing music from the Gladiator soundtrack...Then I wandered down to try and find stripy trouser man - and he remembered me. Bless him. Since some of my other ones have shrunk, maybe I'll get some more. Walking around, I'm getting back into the swing of things. "Where you go?" "This way!" Ahh, yes.Now the plan is to get a train ticket to Kolkata and buy some shalwar kameez for Bangladesh. Meh, shopping.~~~~That wasn't too bad. Ticket has been obtained, more money changed (I upgraded to 2nd class AC since I don't have my own bedding), and 2 shalwar kameez-worthy shirt tops have been bought. I also got supplies for tomorrow - Marie biscuits, fruit and some soap. I'm not planning to eat that... The sun even made an appearance. To balance out the good, I also trapped the skin of my hand painfully and have a blood blister.I've been taught by stripy trouser man (who kindly took me shalwar kameez shopping) how to say thank you in Hindi. I, er, promptly forgot, but apparently a version of '<i>shukran' is also understood and ok to use even with Hindus. I recognise the Arabic origins so I ought to remember that.The hot water worked this afternoon so I was able to wash my hair. Feel better now. I'm falling asleep, but I guess I'd better hang on and try to sleep at the right time. Gah.Ate at the Malhotra restaurant - very nice - and sat with a Canadian woman eating alone. She and her husband travel to India to buy things to sell back in Canada. This year they have brought their 1-year old daughter, so they take it in turns to eat out and watch her back at the hotel. As most 1 year olds, she wants to put everything in her mouth. Not such a great idea, but I guess they have to bring her.Highlight: When the sun came out and warmed my back. Also, remembering last time I was here and having the pain of my wisdom tooth - I'm so glad it's gone.

Kolkata (Calcutta), India

Ok, so yesterday was spent knocking around waiting for the train at 5pm. The sun came out in the afternoon but until then I was absolutely freezing. They don't have any heating inside at all here.I sat in the Everest Cafe drinking hot chai masala and reading a borrowed book until a French girl sat next to me and we got talking. She was also on the overnight train to Kolkata. Her name is Alexandra and though we weren't in the same carriage we arranged to meet by the pre-paid taxi booth at Howrah and share a ride to Sudder St.Then we trotted around Paharganj for a while - confusing the hell out of a guy who insisted on talking to me every time I passed him on Friday. He was harmless enough, but kept saying, "I'm not trying to hassle you!" over and over until I nearly said something about the lady protesting too much. I repeatedly told him I'd be leaving Delhi the next day, which wasn't a lie, so of course when he saw me I could see the confusion cross his face from a distance. Anyway, back to yesterday (Saturday) with Alex: she needed to pick up her repaired clothes and drop an extra bag off in storage for 10 days, and we both needed to use the internet. The rest of the day was spent snoozing and basking in the sun on a roof-top bar with a piece of chocolate cake and a lemon soda.The train was on time, so we only needed to wait for 40 mins or so on the platform. We'd put our bags down in an area of available dry floorspace, but we soon noticed it was near to a locked door with a gap at the bottom from where a rat would sporadically scurry. They mostly ran left, toward another passenger's mountain of baggage, but I had to stand on "rat watch" to discourage the odd one heading our way. At one point there was a great deal of squeaking behind the door - maybe a domestic or something.Then we headed our separate ways to our carriages, where I promptly put my bags on the wrong berth. Correctly re-located, I made the bed (I'd requested an upper berth) and chained my bags up top. My fellow-bunkee was a nice man from Bangalore who told me that the north was dirty and dangerous and the south was nice and educated. He must have felt it was Very Important that I remember this, for he told me another 5 times in the following 18 hours. Considering I was only conscious for 7 of those hours...We set off - it was so good to be moving on - and I was a little disappointed by the relative lack of defecating people by the tracks. Maybe it's a morning ablutions thing and not done at 5pm so much?The warmth and the rocking of the train made me sleepy, so by 8 I was in bed, like the crazy westerner I am. I was woken for dinner (finished off with ice cream, yey!) but then I didn't get up until 7am. I'm not sure why I'm so tired but it definitely beats the insomnia I had last time I was in India. I did wake at about 2am, and then every half hour after that, but it wasn't unpleasant waking so I feel well rested now. I had another wacky dream - I was in a tent at one of those Ashton posse beach parties that I <i>have never been to (wtf?) and when someone snored suddenly and loudly (in real life, on the train) and I woke up and said, "Hannah?" to the sleeping carriage. Heh. Does Hannah snore?7am saw us passing through Jharkhand (apparently in the grips of bird flu, which was why there was no non-veg option on the train) a state created in 2000 out of the southern part of Bihar state. Bihar is still the poorest region of India but Jharkhand has improved since its creation.The problem with the overnight train was that I only had a few hours of daylight to see the country. On the other hand, once you've seen flat plains of paddy fields and the occasional village, you've seen basically the whole route. It's no surprise this whole place floods so badly during the monsoon - the villages are built on patches of earth only a foot or so higher than the flooded paddy fields around them.The Man from Bangalore and I sat quietly as we rolled towards Kolkata. He attempted to start up again (this time about how dirty Kolkata is and how I shouldn't eat anything if I could possibly help it) but I made a noise of mild disinterest and he stopped. We both giggled when we witnessed a couple fighting on the raised path beside the tracks. They were walking along when suddenly the woman turned on the man and started whapping him.At Howrah I got tutted at by a lady I nearly decapitated when I pulled my bag down from above. In fairness, if she'd just given me a bit of space - it was obvious what I was doing...Then into the mayhem of the station. Plenty of porters with trolleys and the calls of, "Chalo, chalo, chalo!" - 'lets go, lets go, lets go' (or just 'move' I suspect).Turns out there are two pre-paid taxi booths, so for a while Alex and I were each stood at one, looking for the other. Then we stood in line waiting to be served while every moronic taxi driver in the area stood around us and wasted their breath. An official had already told us that a taxi to Sudder St is 65 rupees, and a big notice board has all the common destinations and their fares up too, so why they thought we'd be stupid enough to believe them when they claimed 65 rps was per-person, not the whole cab, I don't know.We found a hotel after perusing a few with stained beds. It's a little more than Alex is willing to pay, but I'm not sure we're going to find one cheaper that is also clean enough. We'll see. She is staying for 5 days or so, checking out the Mother Theresa thing, since she was working with a sister organisation in Delhi.Then we showered (mmm clean) and ate (I confess, it was pizza) before going our separate ways. She wanted to find a cheaper place for the days to come and then at 3 she was meeting some volunteers. I got on the metro and saw if I could walk to the Bangladesh Consulate. Turns out you can, though it's a 25 min walk. I didn't expect it to be open with it being Sunday and all, but I wanted to get info and also find out how long it took to get there. The man on the answering side of the buzzer told me to come back tomorrow at 10.30 with various things, and that it would be ready the day after that. Not too bad, but I feel a day has been wasted for not getting the earlier train. Never mind.So, tomorrow I will sit and wait again. I want to go to the flower market, apparently it's beautiful and most likely more fragrant than most of the city. It's much warmer here, at least 10C more, which makes things much more comfortable.I met up with Alexandra in our room and we decided to move tomorrow morning, before I go to the Consulate. She used the internet and I wandered, bumping into a guy from Germany with Caribbean heritage, called Sanaka. He's a lively interesting person, so he ate and I sat with him until Alex was finished, and then we ate and he sat. Poor Alex had a bad experience with a bad samosa, so now she feels ill even looking at Indian food. I had a thali, which was yum, but it's just as well we aren't travelling together cos the sharing food thing would be a problem.I arranged to meet Sanaka at 9 tomorrow since we are both taking the metro south. Then bed, which was a little uncomfortable since the fan makes it too cold and far too noisy (resulting in a headache in the night) but it's too claustrophobic without some air movement.

19 hours in a share-jeep driven by a guy who bore an uncanny resemblance to Rufio from 'Hook'. Good choice to sit in position 1 [front window-side] since sitting in 2 [next to the driver] means he grabs for your crotch every time he changes gear. Mountains = many gear changes. Dude in seat 2, a nice man from Leh who's name I didn't catch and didn't have the courage to ask him to repeat, didn't blink an eye, but I kept wincing on his behalf.During one of the stops [a collection of parachute tents by the roadside] a small child was chasing a lamb around. Possibly in an attempt to stop him, an old guy decided to lunge wildly at him. I didn't catch the whole event, but one minute this ancient looking Ladakhi man was sat on a seat, and the next there was a crash and he was on the floor, on his side, with a bunch of said child's clothing in his hand. The child looked rather non plussed by the whole thing and the old man was ushered inside by the child's mother, presumably since old people don't fall well. Also to protect her child, I should imagine.

"<i>Is-rae-li men, Hallelujah!" -- what The Weather Girls <i>didn't sing.~~~~~Ahh, Manali! How I love your weed lined streets! Not.But every cloud has a silver lining: in this case it came in the form of an awesome shop selling Kullu shawls at decent prices [Bhuttico].Oh, and a giant white rabbit in Vashisht. No, seriously! The owner must have fed it better than she fed herself and, dude? So shiny white! Had the sun been shining I would have had to shield my eyes... She must have conditioned it too. It was pashmina soft. [Hold the phone -- Rabbit. Pashmina. Why didn't I make the connection when I had my hands on the not-so-little bugger?]Best of all, when it attracted a crowd, the owner totally took a load of Israeli girls [collective noun: 'squeee'] for a ride by demanding 10 rupees per photo with her remarkably calm bunny. Maybe it was stoned too.Hmm... I'm going on about this bunny a bit, no? It was so surreal though, I feel I have to document it. And then find a solid alibi to prove I'm not on drugs myself. No way, Jose!

Base Camp, India

Alright, Francoise's husband, here you have it:Got up at silly o'clock for a chilly toilet trip, totally worth it for the incredible view of the stars. Like, wow!Morning routine as usual - wake earlier than I'd like, read, pack, breakfast, water dance, etc. The one difference was that everyone was to carry their sandals with them rather than leaving them in the main bags with the mules. This was because we had to cross about 5 branches of the river. As I know full well from dumping it over my head while naked, this water is bloody freezing. Draminder joined Narish and, with me and Dirk assisting, everyone got over safe and dry.I should probably take this moment to say how great my Crocs have been. I've seen them around and they always look clompy and uncomfortable, but they've been perfect. Really comfortable, 100% waterproof [nothing stopping water getting in, but no need to dry them afterward], light as a feather...Only slight problem is that they get sweaty after a while on a hot day. I don't know about the usual design, with the holes, but mine have an enclosed toe [means they say dry when it rains] and only an open heel. They should be sold with a free tube of Canestan anti-fungal for the inevitable athlete's foot. Also, when they do get water in them, they get kinda slippy inside - your foot cannot grip the inner bit, despite the dimples.Still, definitely better than velco material sandals.Most of the route was across more grassy hillsides and moraines. Hard work at 4000m. We turned slightly left [not sure what compass direction - the general trek direction is north and then north-east, but we definitely took the left valley] into another huge valley, though this one had no flat base like the campsite. The wildflowers here are astounding.We stuck to the river again, though we climbed way above it, and this provided an actual glacier crossing. Not a big one mind, but still, glacier! Digging your toes in first helps, plus the fact that these are the remains from the winter and have a light covering of dust and soil.This is also the first day of proper full-on sunshine. It's nice but makes it extra sweaty. Katryn felt a bit crappy - headache - and considered taking Diamox to combat it. I had mentioned earlier that my mother was a pharmacist and that if anyone needed to take some of my ibuprofen as well as the paracetamol for a headache, they could. Unfortunately this gave me the honorary position of group <i>hakkim. I know practically nothing about medicine or altitude sickness, bar that sex, fitness, etc has no bearing and it can affect anyone. I hear younger adult are more susceptible so I hope I don't have any problems. We reached camp about midday - an easy day in preparation for the hard slog up the pass tomorrow. I was asked if Jenny could take Diamox. Initially, I thought they meant as well as something such as paracetamol [not that I know that either] but then I found out she is allergic to all the -cillins as well as various other things. Whoa! I totally do not know enough to advise her on something that could well kill her, 2 days walk from anywhere. I held up my hands and backed away. No way, man!I had my usual bracing wash, not hair this time, right beside a crumbing glacier over the river. Then back to the tent [with Ann this evening] for pakora [deep fried veg in batter]. Yum!This afternoon was the first truly nice one in terms of weather. It was warm enough to sit out on the rocks and boulders, so we all draped ourselves like beached whales and read books. We had a game of Uno, which proved difficult since there weren't 7 stones in close enough formation [1 for each bum, plus 1 for the cards]. It goes without saying the surrounding scenery was amazing. <img class="yui-img" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1225/1117581370_f0742fd457_o.png" alt="Horsemen, base camp under Tarik La" width="750" height="562">Right behind the tents is the route we are taking tomorrow. It goes straight up about 1000 meters. Base Camp [as this place is imaginatively named] is at about 4000m and the next night's stop at Palador is at the same altitude. Tomorrow is going to be tough, climbing up to the pass at 4850m and then all the way back down.To the right of the slope is an amazing crag with at glacier lip hanging over the edge. I'm trying not to think too hard about what will happen if it decides to calve [is that the right term for a glacier?]Now to the title of this entry. Dirk and Francoise seem to have a slightly teasing friendship. Francoise has a great sense of humour, I get the idea it's similar to mine, if only we spoke the same language. Dirk is also quite silly at times. Anyway, Francoise is the most shameless member of the group when it comes to peeing [hey, when you gotta go, you gotta go, right?] and suddenly announces that she's going behind one of the tents. Dirk's tent. He yells and tries to stop her, but she's already squatting. So he chucks a rock which bounces beautifully around the tent eves and appears to hit her. I high five him. There is some more glee and Francoise is utterly unrepentant [the stone didn't hit her] and then we all settle down to read again. Once she is deep in her book, Dirk scurries off to put a large rock in her sleeping bag. Katryn and I try not to give the game away with our sniggers. Honestly, this is a group of teachers, all old enough to be my parents. Childish much? Gotta love it though.I thought that was the end of the matter, but later on, after dinner, as Ann and I are trying to sleep, there comes a torrent of giggling, which I identify as Francoise and Katryn. They are friends from school, so I imagine the giggling is an old pastime. We couldn't figure out what was going on - it carried on a lot longer than it ought considering everyone had gone to bed.Next morning we found out the truth - in revenge for the rocks, Francoise had gone to Dirk's tent and threatened to pee beside it while he was inside, effectively beside his head. Lovely. Anyway, on squatting, she had inadvertently let out an audible fart. She was mortified, but unable to stop laughing, Dirk was vastly amused, and Katryn either heard the offending act itself [we were furthest away, out of range] or was told about it when Francoise returned.I feel this is not the end.

Mudh, India

Jenny slept well again in my presence. In fairness, after yesterday's walk it's not surprising.Rather than lie in bed awake and bored - I finished Kim on Monday evening - I got up and snuck into the cook tent. Half of them were still tucked up in blankets on the floor - I had to be really careful where I put my feet as it turns out you can fit more horsemen per square metre of ground than you can pygmies.Draminder make me porridge, bless him. Later on, he outdid himself with the best breakfast omelette yet.It's really dry here. We are all sniffing and twitching our noses in an attempt to dislodge what feels like an entire rhino.At 9 we set off along the same path - a stony, dusty, dry, hot route slowly taking us down toward civilization.The flat stony areas have herbs growing on them, not thickly, but enough that when you walk past it's like walking through a washing power advert. Thyme and lavender - mmm. Except then you come across an air-pocket of recently laid mule poo and the whole image shatters.We came across a river with a bridge. What a bridge. It was two round wooden poles about 5 inches in diameter laid above the water. Large flat rocks had been place over these, at intervals, and some were missing, leaving huge gaps. Not surprising since they were just balanced there and not fixed in any way. Narish made it, then I had a go, standing up and shuffling forward with one foot on each pole. The rocks made it 10 times more difficult. I put my bag down and went back to help Dirk. As I saw he didn't need my help I turned around and one of the rocks promptly fell through underneath me. My leg followed but fortunately I caught myself, only scratching my shin as a souvenir. The others opted to wade across, so the 3 of us formed a human chain. The water was the deepest we've had to cross, shin height, and after standing in it for 3 minutes my feet were thoroughly numb.Possibly because they were damp when I put my shoes on, I then got a blister on my toe. When we stopped for lunch, it was windy, adding to the effect the sun had on my face. Fortunately I borrowed a headband thing from Francoise or I really would've burnt my scalp.We passed some local girls, bearing much more Tibetan features. I used my <i>jule skills and got a grinning response. The others carried on, while I stopped to sort my blister out as best I could.It's so dry here. By the time I got to camp, I was ready to chill. This is the return to civilisation; Mudh is an actual village, dwarfed by the mountain behind it.<img class="yui-img" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1155/1116174399_04985a57bf_o.jpg" alt="Mudh village" width="568" height="757">There were kids around, all with snotfaces. Very cute. I lay in my tent to write in the shade, while the others went down to Mudh village. It was still windy - I think it's always pretty windy here - which adds to the aridity. I found I had a contained nosebleed. I remember when I arrived back in Jo'burg from Mozambique in winter and having the same thing. It'll last for a few days at least.As evening drew in, the donkeys that had been hanging around decided to careen around and bray loudly. Due to the proximity of the cliffs, the noise echoed repeatedly. It was pretty eerie. You know that scene in Star Wars, when Luke gets attacked by Tusken Raiders and then Obi Wan scares them off by making that weird noise? It was very much like that. Not to be outdone, I figured it would be a good time to use my learnt Flemish: picante. Probably spelt wrong, but it means "spicy". PICANTE! echo echo echo... Good stuff, and it got a laugh from the Belgians.Last night in a tent - I get Katryn again.
