San Diego, California, United States

The dock-job (the Beach Gang) in South Naknek didn't work out in my favor. I managed to stick it out for 3 weeks. The HR department in Seattle seem to omit the details of my position, meaning i had signed up for trash duty for the entire summer. The trip wasn't a complete flop.......it had its highlights. Made some great friends (all from the PacNW) and learned the hardships of the fishing industry. On the days not spent in the village dump, i (along with the Beach Gangers) tended to the needs of our fishermen. There's an amazing feeling of gradtitude when the fishermen are appreciative that you helped them get their boat in the water so they could go to work. To see the smiles and cheers as they drift away from our dock.

My journey out of South Naknek will always be memorable. After resigning from the fishery employer, i had to find my way back to civilization all on my own coin. My first hurdle was to cross the King Salmon River by boat or plane since a road bridge was nonexistence. Not a single fisherman would risk the boat option, since the tide was continuing out into the bay. So I started walking to the S. Naknek air strip to where I had to phone over to the Air taxi on the otherside of the river. A friendly native noticed me walking and offered a ride to the air strip (i didn't decline). It was $40 for about a 3min plane ride but when I gave the office lady grief for taking my last $40 she took pity on me and said this one was on the house. From there it was a 20 mile trek to get to King Salmon where I could catch a plane to Anchorage. I decided to try my luck and walk/hitch hike. Four miles down the road I finally got a ride, ironically the guy that picked me up was the pilot that had flowed me over the river. After the short, but expensive, flight to Anchorage I found myself sitting in a cafe wondering what to do next. I decided to go see Meg so another 3 flights and 24 hours later I ended up in San Diego.

My plans are to enjoy the sand and sun for the 4th of July and from there it's to be determined...

South Naknek, Alaska, United States

I finally made it to Alaska! Last Friday I meet with the HR department who told me they did NOT have any spots left on the boats due to too many returning employees from last year. But, they said they had another position that they thought would be "perfect" for me...working the docks with a crew they called the "Beach Gang." Needless to say I was pretty disappointed after waiting for two weeks for a conformation on the boat. A job is a job though and I needed it. So, they put me up in a hotel that night and flew me to South Naknek the next day.
I got off the plane around 2pm, was given a tour, shown to my room, told dinner was at 5 and I could be on the dock after dinner to finish out the day. It's been 12hour days everyday since and they said they say its slow right now. When the season actually starts I could be working up to 22 hours a day...arghhhh! At least I'll be getting a whole lot of overtime!! My first week is finished here.....with many many more to go...LOL! I have a whole new appreciation for the guys that do this year after year.

More to come...hopefully I"ll be able to post some pictures soon...

Seattle, Washington, United States

Arrived in Seattle a couple of weeks ago. Been super busy with finalizing the fishing boat details and hanging out with Meg. She left yesterday (5/27) to spend her summer off in San Diego and then its back to Hawaii for one more year of nursing school (almost there, babe). Meg had a family connection in Seattle, so we had an awesome lakefront studio to rest ourselves each night. The family was very welcoming and we can't thank them enough (thx one more time, john & karen).

Seattle has plenty to offer, whether its live music, festivals (Folklife), underground tours, ferry rides, hiking, boating, bike riding, irish pubs, City Center (space-needle & experience music center), public markets (Pikes), seafood (salmon & oysters), famous houses (Bill Gates) and much more. My favorite and must for everybody is the Underground Tour. This tour is under the streets of Pioneer Square. Many of Seattle's present storefronts are the second story of the original buildings. Seattle experienced major sewer complications in the late 1800's and had to fill all the streets with backfill to restructure their infrastructure. The tour is amazing......just see for yourself!

I'm still hanging around Seattle due to my unfinalized fishing start-date. The company is still deciding what boat i'll be working. I could either be on a boat that leaves June 3rd or 10th. It's very frastrating, but i'm trying to be patient. Hopfully my next entry will be for Alaska.......cold summertime....yikes
Tillamook, Oregon, United States

So just after posting my last entry, Cory arrived at the coffee cafe and explained the day was way too nice to be inside. So with that said, Friday afternoon was spent driving to Mt. Hood. Many stops were made along the way, including: Columbia River Lookout, Latourell Falls, Wahkeena Falls, Multnomah Falls, Double Mt. Brewery (grabbed two growlers) and Timberline Lodge. Some of the best pics of Mt. Hood were taken from Timberline Lodge, which is ski-in/out lodge.

Ended up starting Saturday morning helping Cory's friend move out of her apartment (got to repay Cory somehow). Got back to Cory's place and waited for everyone who was camping/hiking with us on the coast that afternoon. During our wait, we ate some leftover thai food (Vi Thai). The leftovers ended up being cold since Cory doesn't have 21th century basics (i.e. microwave or pots/pans for the stove.....lol). Once everyone showed up, we were in route for the coast.

We hiked Saddle Mountain that afternoon. The loop was just over 5 miles. Cory's decimal-rounding skills aren't the sharpest. He likes to round his miles down to lure hikers on the trip, but once on the trail the number seems to lengthen. No worries, the hike was well worth each extra tenth of a mile. After the hike, we ended at Bill's Tavern and Brewhouse in Cannon Beach for dinner and some tasty beers. I recommend the blackberry wheat. We drove past Haystack Rock and proceeded to Cape Lookout State Park where we camped for the night

We woke early and broke down camp ASAP. We got on the trail (Cape Lookout) early to beat the tourist crowd. And we did indeed because we saw many groups on our return to the trailhead parking lot. We ended our trip at Pelican Brewery at Cape Kiwanda Beach, which is near Pacific City. Also, hiked a huge dune on the beach.

Wow, that was an eventful weekend. Thanks to Cory's knowledge of Portland's camping/hiking areas and not to mention him driving (Ebony). Well, I'm leaving for Seattle on Wednesday (3/13) to meet up with Meg. Can't wait to see you, Meg........
Portland, Oregon, United States

Ended up staying an extra night at the local hostel (total of 3 nights). But then i was introduced to someone who lives here and he grew up close to my hometown. He has been kind enough to let me sleep at his place until i leave for Seattle (thx, man). It sure beats paying for a hostel (gonna owe you some beers).

As for the city of Portland, it has much to offer for the person who is into outdoor activities. Some are easily accessible by walking but camping/hiking activities are in need for a car (as i've found out). Plus the mass transportation doesn't service these locations. After meeting Cory, he is my connection to this spots (man, i owe you again). So this weekend will be a hiking/camping trip to an unknown destination at this point.

Joy the pics of places within the Portand city limits.
Portland, Oregon, United States

Arrived in the city yesterday evening with the rain and all. The weather is gradually changing as i get closer to Alaska and its not to the better. The train ride here was awesome. It was a grueling 20 hours, but the scenery was well worth every minute. The trip offered mountains, rivers/streams, lakes, snow caps, pine forests, sawmills, and much more. The Northwest Hostel (currently resting at) is located to virtually everything. Tonight will be my second and final night in the hostel. My plans are to post up in a remote campground in the area, but things are not finalize. Well, its time to see the sites. First stop, Burnside Skatepart......definitely number one on the list.

The pics are the train ride to Portland and a "Wizard Stick Park" in the bay area. This party was definitely a first for me, so i just had to post them. Sorry....mom.
San Francisco, California, United States

My visit to the bay area has been truly an excellent one. Walking has been my key form of mobilization, plus the city's BART and buses. And let me tell you....this city ISN'T the flattest. But the walking is good since its the only exercising i'm able to squeeze into my trip's itinerary. Much physical conditioning will be required once i'm done with this trip (gonna need the push, mitch).

These are more pics from my highlighted San Francisco stops. My visit to the art museum (SFMOMA) seems nonexistence due to my forgetfulness (simply forgot the camera). I should probably fasten that item to my neck! Anyhow.....the art exhibits were okay, since art museums aren't really my thing. But i did enjoy William Kentridge's work. His art (in my eyes) describes the hardships of life. I look forward to viewing more of his work in the near future.

Tomorrow is a travel day. Gonna be in route to Portland via train. It's going to be 20hrs of click-clack noises and choo-chooin.
San Francisco, California, United States

Made it to San Francisco last Friday (4/24), but along the way i stopped in San Jose. Lauren (my long-lost sister) was kind enough to give me a lift, but she did score a tour of the Winchester Mystery mansion in return of the favor. This mansion had a frightful difference than the Hearst Castle. Ms. Winchester had some odd architecture taste, but was interesting in a weird way. It should be a stop for anyone traveling thru the city of San Jose.

Once in San Francisco, i met with my hometown (IN) friend, Josh. Josh and his roomates have been kind enough to open their couch during my stay. Josh and i have been doing alot of reminiscing and catching up. Josh continues to expand his musical background with his new band (Maus Haus). He also is opening my interests into new musicans. San Francisco is definitely a great city for musicans and artists. It has much to offer them. It's not the city i see myself to every settle down within it, but Josh it's all you. So keep thriving to your dream. Okay, enough of that crap......turn the page.

Haven't seen too many of the city's sights yet. But i did manage to catch a couple of bands at an old-school venue (The Great American Music Hall). This venue was grandest nightclub of its time (opening in 1907). The French architecture was most definitely elegant and elaborate craftsmanship. Much history there, if you're interested check their website (http://www.gamh.com/). I did spend yesterday in the Golden Gate Park. Walked around there for much of the day. Went thru the recently rebuilt Academy of Science. The revenated building had been built to LEED standards (Platinum status). The academy has much to offer; including but not limited to, aquarium and rainforest exhibits. The city has been fun so far...........look forward to seeing more.
Monterey, California, United States

It's all about who you know on this trip........
Some friends (names shouldn't be shared) got me into this festival by going behind the scenes. It was an amazing feeling to be surrounded by some of the most famous chefs. Plus, being able to taste their signature dishes and have great wine to go along with them. I was completely out of my realm, but definitely enjoyed myself. My friends in the culinary arts would be completely jealous. Sorry guys, but like i said "it's all about who you know".
This day i left my camera at home. So NO pics to prove that i was actually there. Seriously........it's all true!!!!
