Newport, Rhode Island, United States

Well, this was a very nice relaxing part of the trip. Saturday we went to the ocean for a loooooong walk, lots of stick-throwing-action for my girl. After that, we drove around the area, passing lots of huge homes that were built here in the 1920's, Vanderbilt was one of them and you can visit lots of these huge estates and since I've seen enough of these over the years, I decided not to participate in this circus.

I compromised on parking downtown and walk around the old district and we caught a sunset over the bay on the back of a boat that I got a tip for from a lady from one of the stores (who happend to have a little crazy barking dog, yet again). Then we sat down somewhere for a hot coco and chatted with somke locals who gave me a good tip on a place to have a drinkie-poo where tourists don't go. So on my way there. Johannah once more in the car, waiting it out. Had 2 local brewskish and a strange guy on one side that was a bit weird and when he got up and socialized a bit, I got the talk with a couple on the other side of him, Kristi and Jim. Nice pair. Talked for a while about traveling, Jim was smitten by the idea and impressed by what I am doing and how cool it is, he said it about 5 times. Kristi said to stop by the next day in the place where she works, Griswolds, a local tavern and I said I would see her then.

After that I went to an internet cafe but the connection wasn't very strong so we called it a night. Next day we went to another beach that the weird dude from the night before recommended and this was a nice beach. Then I decided to hang out with Kristi for a while and since it wasn't busy, we chatted for a while and since I was feeling under the weather again, she made me tea with honey and 2 hot toddies.
The rest of the night was back in bed.

And as much I wanted to get up this morning, I couldn't. I had the chills, starting to cough like an old sailor and so this day was spend pretty much all day in bed. I'm going to New York tomorrow and want to be feeling better for Obama's win (hopefully)

So we're out and up The Big Apple....

Cheers
Newport, Rhode Island, United States

I'm yet in a new town, new state (small one), Newport. Rhode Island. Drove from Portland south and spent the afternoon in Boston. I would like to go there sometime for a couple of days with some company when I can find an el cheapo flight with hotel nights included. If you don't know people in the bigger cities, it's a bit less interesting to check it out, too much to figure out.

I had some parking karma downtown Boston this afternoon so I parked downtown for a couple of quarters and after a quick look on the Yelp page for food on Boston, I decided to have lunch in The Union Oyster House. It was recommended by locals even though there are also plenty of tourists going. I already scoped the menu online and decided to have the fish chowder (no weird fish in it). It gets high ratings from so many people as a great hangout and food spot.

My experience sucked from the moment walking in the door. There is a dude standing behind a counter, mumbling that I can go upstairs and stay down stairs and sit wherever I want. I chose upstairs. Hostess wants to plant me in the waaay back so I asked a seat in 1 of the front booths, all right then. I sit, nobody shows up. People pass me by, don't say a thing. I waited for 5 minutes and ask somebody if I can get somebody to come over, she says that she will get somebody and doesn't. Too lazy, she waits until the other hostess comes back and asks her to get me somebody. She was also too lazy to walk to the bar to get somebody (20 feet)and decides to come over and "help me" by asking me what I want (nice). Chowder comes; it's bland and has 3 small recognizable pieces of fish in it. Nobody ever comes back so I ask if I can please get the bill. Then a waitress shows up and I put my credit card on the bill ($7.30) and she tells me, while walking away (like it's ok what she's about to say and that I'm ok with it too) that there is a $10 minimum for using the card. There is no minimum that a restaurant/store can demand if you want to pay with a credit card so I told her that that was a mistake. She said to check it with her manager and then came back to tell me I was right.

You can take the whole thing up with a manager but in a place like this where it concerns a "too cool for skool" establishment that it wouldn't make a difference they are too complacent. I tip often when I feel bad for the waitress if there is anything positive I can find. This was not one of them.

I got Johannah out the car and took a stroll thru that part of town and decided that I have to come back sometime to delve a little deeper in this town. Time to drive to Newport. A coastal town in the southeast part of Rhode Island. I love coastal. Johannah too, as soon as she smells that smell, she tells me in her Johannah way that it's time. She will put her nose towards her window, then looks at me with her face diagonal and then points with her eyes to the knobs where I open the window with. Then it's my turn as part of our routine to ask her if she wants the window open and then she does the same motions 1 more time but quicker. It's beyond cute.

I drove thru town before striking down at the motel and I think it's a good thing that the summer is over, it's nice and quite, this could be otherwise a pretty touristy place. Although not as crazy touristy (and expensive) as the Cape Cod area, that's one of the reasons I passed that area. We'll be here 2 or 3 nights and then go further south...

Sign I saw in Boston along the street: "Looks can open doors but doesn't keep you in the room".

Great one!!!
