On Monday morning we checked out and then went to Venice Beach and Santa Monica where we shopped some more. We then took the car back and went to the airport. The flight left at 17:35 and was just over 9 hours. We arrived home yesterday at around 11:20am UK time.

Today we started by walking along the beach at Santa Barbara but it was really windy. We then had around a 2 hour drive to LA but we were too early to check in so we went to see the Hollywood sign.Today we're staying at the Crowne Plaza LAX which is near the airport and away from the main areas so we don’t really have time to see anything, especially as there’s so much traffic and you have to drive everywhere.

Santa Barbara, California, United States

Yesterday we drove about 4 hours to Carmel where we stayed at Carmel Mission Inn. There wasn't a whole lot to do there so we went shopping and then went to Monterey to Fisherman’s Wharf. It was really tacky there but we saw seals.Today we drove about 7 and a quarter hours to Santa Barbara where we’re staying at Hotel Mar Monte. Along the drive we went to Point Lobos where we did a walk to see sea lions, we didn’t spot any sea otters though. We also went along the Big Sur and stopped at a beach to see elephant seals. There were loads of them! We also took a detour to San Luis Obispo to find Sephora but there was nowhere to park.When we arrived in Santa Barbara they told us that they didn’t have a room for us in the main building so we’re staying a few blocks away.Here in Santa Barbara we just went shopping.

Yesterday we drove about 6 and a half hours to San Francisco where we're staying in the Kabuki Hotel in Japantown. We first walked to Fisherman’s Wharf where we looked in the shops and saw the sea lions at Pier 39. We also went to Lombard Street before getting hopelessly lost going back to the hotel.Today we left early to go to Pier 33 for our trip to Alcatraz where we did an audio tour. Also there at the time was a former inmate who was signing his book. Then we went on an open-top sightseeing bus which went to places such as Union Square, Haight Ashbury and the Golden Gate Bridge. It was so cold and windy going over the bridge.This evening we had a drink at the Hard Rock Café (at last) and we ended up walking an hour back to the hotel and that’s without getting lost this time!

Yosemite National Park, California, United States

The first place we went today was Bridalveil Falls which was about a 20 minute round walk. However, they're pretty dry at this time of year. We then drove for around an hour to Mariposa Grove where we walked to the "Grizzly Giant" Sequoia tree. Lastly we drove back to the visitor centre where we got the bus to Mirror Lake where we did another walk. The lake is empty at this time of year and we could walk where the water usually is. The lake is in a mountain lion habitat and there were signs saying that if you get attacked you have to fight back!Unfortunately we didn’t see any bears at Yosemite; however, we did see squirrels, woodpeckers and deer.It’s been freezing today and really windy.

Yosemite National Park, California, United States

On Saturday night we walked miles to find some food and Visalia got better if you avoided downtown.Yesterday we went to Sequoia National Park where we saw the huge Sequoia trees; we climbed from 600ft to 7000ft along these twisting windy roads. We felt so ill; the roads just turn back on themselves. We did a walk through the Sequoias and then went to walk to the biggest one. I felt so ill with the altitude though that I didn't go all the way. Mum and dad did though.This morning we drove about 3 hours to Yosemite National Park where we’re staying at Yosemite View Lodge. The view from our room is amazing; it looks out over the mountains and river. Today we walked to Yosemite Falls but they’re currently dry. The walk was about an hour round trip. We then viewed El Capitan from the bottom.

Yesterday we spent most of the day in the hotel because it was too hot. We did look at the museum though and at sunset we went to Zabriskie Point where there was amazing views.Today we drove 6 hours through amazing mountain scenery to Visalia where we're staying at the Marriott Hotel. The book describes Visalia as charming and presentable but it’s more like dated and dull. Everything here is shut by 4pm on a Saturday!

Death Valley National Park, California, United States

Yesterday we explored Las Vegas, we walked miles and it was really hot so we ended up getting the bus down the Strip instead. It stops at every hotel and is really slow because of the traffic but it's worth it to save walking in the heat. Everything looks so close but when you start walking nothing ever seems to get any nearer. We looked at all the hotels, went shopping and watched the "volcano" eruption outside our hotel.Also yesterday morning I went to shop in Sephora and Dad saw that Kat Von D was doing a signing that afternoon so I got to meet her!This morning we drove about 2 and a half hours to Death Valley where we’re staying at Furnace Creek Inn. It’s about 43°C, so hot! There’s no shade anywhere. Even our cold water here is coming out the tap hot. Mum bought a glass that says:“I survived, perspired, cursed the heat, nearly passed out and barely made it out of Death Valley National Park.”It’s so true.

Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

Yesterday morning we were up at 5 with jetlag so at 6 we bundled on the clothes and went to the Grand Canyon for sunrise. It was windy and freezing cold but it was good and we saw the mules going down with the supplies.We then travelled to Las Vegas which took about 5 and a half hours including stops. We drove along a bit of historic Route 66 and saw a roadrunner. We also stopped at Hoover Dam.We're now in Las Vegas, staying at the Mirage. Yesterday we explored the Strip but it’s really long. We also saw the fountain show at the Bellagio where the fountains are choreographed to music which was really good.
