Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

We start this “Odyssey” with a 2:30 a.m. alarm going off, beep...beep....beep (I hope this will be our last alarm for a while) in order to meet the taxi to the airport for our 4:00 a.m. security walk-though and a 6:00 a.m. flight.  All went well on the flight, checked in at the “Avalon” getting a nice suite with a big bathroom and a private out-door hot tub! Cancun was first started in the 1970’s as a mass tourism location for mostly  American’s.  It has been very successful and that maybe it’s downfall, it is not Mexican, but more American.  The town and the beach’s have had their problems with 2 hurricanes hitting it in 2005.  Over building and a bad world  economy has also had their effects on the city.We enjoyed our time here with great weather, (temperature is about 82-84 degree’s during the day and 68-65 degree’s at night), the hotel staff was super and we took the bus downtown for some “real” Mexican food at “La Parrilla.”

We invite you to come along with us on our 4th thrilling adventure, this time it’s Central America.  Starting in the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) we travel though Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and end our trip in Panama. This part of the world offers so many different experiences from the history of the Mayan civilization, Spanish colonial cities of the past, 42 active volcanoes in the region, misty mountain cloud forests, magnificent beaches (from both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean coasts). This area also offers a very high level of biodiversity in both animal and plant life, which we hope to discover during our travels. Our odyssey will be a combination of the unique cultural and traditions (past and present) of the people of the region, to one of the greats man-made marvels the “Panama Canal.”  Over the next six (6) months sit back, open up your computer and join us with pictures, videos and blog entries of what we hope will be another great experience in travel.

We are on the road for 2009, the 3rd leg of the "Goodrich Odyssey" to continue to catch glimpses of the planet we live on.  Our next stop is southern Africa for about 6 months of via planes, buses, cars, and by foot to see the overwhelming display of geographical, ecological, and cultural diversity that the southern part of this vast continent has to offer.  It all begins in South Africa and moves to Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania. We hope to experience the world's largest "free range" of wild animal populations, with large carnivores (such as lions, hyenas, and cheetahs) and herbivores (such as buffalo, deer, elephants, and giraffes). These sites will be blended together with the city and rural life of the continents people. I hope you will enjoy following Darcy and I on another adventure.

Our last few days at Kruger we stayed again at our favorite camp (because of the view) Olifants over looking the Olifants river. Got some great pictures (much better in person, you can see about 60 or more miles in all directions) of elephants crossing the river at sunset and during the early afternoon. We will never forget the view of the park from here! Then moved to the main camp Skukuza for our final night.

We were driving down the main tar road called the H1-6 and found 2 lions resting in the afternoon sun after a night of hunting. A few hours later during our drive some people told us about a hyena den with a female and her babies. We found the den in a back dirt road, could hear the babies but could not see them. Mom & Dad were sleeping.

We hear word at the camp that a leopard was spotted and jumped in the truck and followed the other cars. The pictures did not come out to good, based on it was in the dark parts of the tree branchs. Some facts on them: the leopard is an agile and stealthy predator, smaller than the other members of the cat family. The leopard is still able to take large prey given a massive skull that well utilizes powerful jaw muscles. Head and body length is between 35 and 75&nbsp;inches, the tail reaches 24 to 43&nbsp;inches. Shoulder height is 18-31&nbsp;inches. Males are about 30% larger than females, weighing 82 to 200&nbsp;lbs compared to 62 to 132&nbsp;lbs for females (I think we saw a female). <i>The view of the Olifants River from our bungalow was the best view we have every seen! Elephants, Hippo and many other animals living their daily life in peace.
