Wellington, North Island, New Zealand

Ferry crossing was great, 3 hours from South Island to North Island. Leaving Picton - we had lots of tree clad hills dropping straight into the ocean - we imagine this to be something like Milford Sound - the fiord area we missed in the south. Helen decided now was the time to really get her CV done so took two nights in Hutt valley to camp. Second day we went into Wellington, I took boys to Te Papa museum while Helen went off to find an agent.
Otaki, North Island, New Zealand

Well, now we are here. Byron's Resort. One of the ones we have seen for sale. Everybody tells us how lovely the Kapiti coast is, yes I agree and in summer it is undoubtibly great, very busy with hoilday makers. In winter, come off State Highway 1 and all is very quiet!!!
Still enjoying exceptional weather, we pass through an area of rain when driving, pull up and the sun comes out!!
Nealy got burnt yesterday, forgetting how strong the sun is.
Picton, South Island, New Zealand

Wow, how lucky are we? For three days Lewis pass has been closed to all traffic because of severe weather - basically snow too deep. We were concerened about setting off today and having to take a much longer route, but hey, Lewis Pass is open!!! What beautiful scenery we had, lots of fresh snow on all the trees, and grass. Boys stopped for a while to build play - just after we passed another family playing on the road just over a blind hill and bend - lucky Helen didn't drive over them!!
Got to the top of the track to find the bridge was washed out by last weeks heavy rains!!
Saturday afternoon, boys, including Daniel, enjoyed a ride around the town in Pedal cars. Then off to the Sulphur pools for a dip - POOH are they smelly!!!
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand

We stayed in a nice site in Franz Josef, which had a huge glacier, close to the village.

CHILDREN : We all went indoor ice climbing when we started it was -2c in the ice room, we were all given boots with spikes on them and axes. Alex and Gareth got bigger axes and Ben and Sam got smaller ones. The instructor we had was called Rob. later on we went to go on a glacier walk we had to have lots of warm clothes we were given boots for that. to get to the glacier we had to walk along a river bed and then at the end of the river bed we had to put our spikes on our boots to start climbing the glacier, it was really cold it looked like a 10 minute walk from the start, but that was only because it was so big, it took 4 hours to walk there and and back. when we got to the bus, we had to wait ages for the slow people.
