Abu Simbel, Egypt

This was the reason we didn't leave much sooner. but oh wow, was it worth the wait! well, not really I would have done things different, but Abu Simbel was absolutely Fabulous. Really I dont know how they managed to pull this one off. their architectural, engineering and artistic genius is unparalleled in this TEMPLE. wow. really a sight to see. it was completely worth it. if nothing else go here, and skip Cairo. One of the main things about getting here however, is that you have to get up in time to catch the 4AM ride down to the border of Sudan. this was kind of incredible, but the only way to go see Abu Simbel is to get on the convoy schedule - so you are safely escorted to this remote part of Egypt. It was about 3 hours to get down south, and worth every minute of it. If I can ever come back here, I'll make sure I go to the light show... cuz apparently they had one - but it was at night of course. This is the place to go... Forget GIZA... o.k. not really :D
Alexandria, Egypt

Old Alexandria would have been cool. New Alexandria had very few old monuments to look at. Oh yeah, they had none. cuz everything got destroyed and burnt. it was kind of a anti-climatic place. We were sad that it was so hard to get around here and no one spoke English. Except the guys at the SOFITEL. yummy breakfaast!
Athens, Attica, Greece

This place was really nice. REally easy to get around. I jumped out of the plane, into the metro and went to the Acropolis. it wasn't bad at all. I thought I was going to spend a ton on taxi and whatever, and it was only 12 EUROS for my double trip on the metro. that was almost as much as my entrance fee to the Parthenon. It was really nice to get there before 8am. i was way early. but what was I going to do right? Stay at the airport and shop? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! although I really wish I had gotten some olive oil. I'm silly for not picking one up. it would have been really good! oh well, there's always next time.
Wadi Musa -, Jordan

Oh my God, was I scared for my life!!!! Crossing the border from Israel to Jordan wasn't too bad. Getting from the border to Petra was the scariest thing in my life. Sorry to be such a pesimist, but I honestly did not know what the hell was happening when my taxi driver got pulled over and had to bring a military guy with us. Apparently it's illegal in Jordan to smoke while you're driving. So my taxi driver got a ticket, but since we gave this guy a ride all was well. Well, I was trying to figure out if they were going to kidnap me or what. It was me - a retarded American traveling by myself - and the two of them, in the middle of the freakin' desert. No cell phone reception, no other cars, no tourists nearby.... you get the picture. I'll write more about Petra. Seriously, you only need 2 days in Jordan, no more. Stay tuned for adventures in Petra at night, the HIgh Monastery *AMAZING*, and of course the main sight... Indiana Jones comes to mind?
Eilat, Israel

Ssssooooo....I was super excited to go and get out of Egypt to a country that might be more friendly to American Citizens....Right... so I was optimistic even through the TABA border and walking into the Eilat super resort spot of Israel. All would have been awesome had I not walked into the airport. These people were seriously abusing their authority and the questioning was just plain insane. Things I did wrong: 1)Look like an ARab 2)Travel by myself 3) coming from Egypt. If I had just taken the bus to Jerusalem everything would have been o.k. instead like a dork, I decided to get on a plane for the 1 hour ride to Tel Aviv, and then I had to get a special Nesher taxi to drive me over to Jerusalem. If you are going to Israel, no matter where you're coming from, get ready for some pretty annoying questions. I was nice at the begininning but towards then end when the security chick took my camera and decided to play with it like it was a toy, I lost it. I told her her questions were stupid and irrelevant and to give me back my camera. I was really wishing that they would get hit and the Americans would pull out their help. Anyway, enough moaning. Jerusalem, as seen through the eyes of a Catholic (me) was truly awesome. Walking through the Mount of Olives, and all the churches that they had was pretty amazing. The country overall is much richer than it's neighbors. NO wonder they are fighting for something. Make sure you get walking shoes for Jerusalem. One day should be enough to cover everything. Tour to Nazareth and the sea of Gailee is a good idea. Tour to the Dead Sea and Masada is a MUST. I wish I had stayed at the Dead Sea longer, and skipped all the dang shopping the tour bus brought us to. Other than that, much nicer country than Egypt and Jordan.... Stay tuned for adventures entering the Jordan border :)
Anyway, i got to go on a HOT AIR BALLOON!!!! it was super cheap. o.k. so I don't know how much it is in the US, but this little shindig only ran me about 300 LE, which is about $50USD... it was really nice and we almost made it over the Valley of the Kings and the WEst bank. Except the wind blew us way out of the way, and so we landed in corn... almost. It was really cute, then I had a
'special' car to take me back to my tour cuz they didn't know where in teh world I was... but it was o.k. at least I got to see all the things I wanted to that full day until 2PM, which in Egypt weather that's unheard of!
