Today Barry and I became gluttons in our attempt to imitate Anthony Bourdain.We already went to Pho 78, a Vietnamese restaurant, yesterday for a delicious meal that included soup and a bowl of noodles, meat, shrimp, and more.Today we started the day at Myung Ga Tofu for Korean food.  This turned out to be the biggest surprise and the best meal of the day.  We shared rice and octopus in a hot stone pot and also short ribs.  Both meals were so full of flavor.Following that meal we walked next door for some shwarma at an Israeli restaurant named Shawarma King.Our next stop was Borinqueya for Puerto Rican food.  We shared a platter of monfongo with pork.  Yummy!Next we drove north on University to Kuluck for Persian food.  This was my least favorite meal of the day, but here we had chicken and beef kabobs.The last stop was Hong Kong City for an assortment of dumplings and appetizers.

Hyde Park, New York, United States

We left White Plains, NY and drove about an hour north to Hyde Park.  The first stop was Franklin Delano Roosevelt Home National Historic Site.  Here we toured the home of FDR and saw where he and his wife were buried. Next we visited Eleanor Roosevelt Home National Historic Site and toured her home.  According to nps.gov, "Eleanor Roosevelt and her friends Nancy Cook, Marion Dickerman, and Caroline O’Day created Val-Kill Industries in 1926. Located on the Roosevelt family estate in Hyde Park, New York, Val-Kill Industries was a direct response to changing demographics in the local community. At Val-Kill, the Roosevelts promoted cottage industry as a means to employ young men, supplement the income of farming families, and sustain a healthy balance between rural agriculture and urban industry." Our next visit was at Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site.  According to nps.gov, the mansion "is a remarkably complete example of a gilded-age country place, illustrating the political, economic, social, cultural, and demographic changes that occurred as America industrialized in the years after the Civil War." Next we drove another hour north to visit Martin Van Buren National Historic Site.  Here we visited his home and four miles up the road we visited his burial site. At 7:30PM we went for dinner south of Hyde Park at Shadows.  We ate outside along the Hudson River.  It was great!

I started the day the same by waking up early and eating at Essa Bagel.  I then took a taxi to Pier 83 for a three hour cruise on the Circle Line.  The cruise went completely around the island and I saw all five boroughs.  We had a close up of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.  The boat also went past the United Nations and the tomb of Ulysses S Grant.    I got off the boat at 1PM.  I caught a bus that took me to 50th and 6th Avenue.  I walked to Rockefeller Center and took the elevator up to the three level observation deck on the "Top of the Rock".  I had tremendous 360 degree views of the city as well as spectacular views of Central Park and the Empire State Building. I strolled downstairs to inquire about the NBC tour and the guy told me the tour already left 2 minutes prior.  But he rushed me down two flights and got me on the tour.  I saw some backstage sets with Saturday Night Live being the most famous.  However, the best part came when the tour ended and Jimmy Fallon's assistant asked our small group if we would sit in on his warmup for his monologue for his show that night.  It was great!  Our small group of about 15 came into the theater and I was in the front row.  There were also about a dozen of his writers or assistants there too.  Jimmy Fallon came out and talked to us and then tried out his jokes.  Basically he had a bunch of setups and each had multiple punch lines.  It was interesting that when we had a louder laugh he would look up to us and then take notes on those jokes.  My final stop was back to the Belgian bar for a couple more beers with my parents.We then rented a car and left the city to go north to visit Shelley.  On the drive up we stopped off to visit St. Paul's Cathedral National Historic Site.  According to nps.gov, St. Paul's Church helps to tell the story of the development of colonial society and the road to the American Revolution. It consists of an 18th century stone church that was used as a Revolutionary War hospital, a cemetery with burial stones dating to 1704 and the remnant of a Village Green that was the scene of the famous Election of 1733 which raised issues of Freedom of Religion and the Press. We eventaully arrived to Shelley and Damian's house at 8PM and had a BBQ and margaritas.

I flew in yesterday afternoon.  About a 1/3 into the flight a surprise storm hit the plane from below and knocked the plane up in wild bump.  The plane then plumeted before being knocked up high again and then free falling some more.  Drinks and items went flying everywhere as people were screaming all around.  Luckily there was no more after that.  A couple of hours after landing with my parents, my Aunt Elaine from Toronto flew in too.  We all took a taxi to our hotel.That night we went to an amazing Chinese restaurant in the city called Shun Lee Palace.  We had scallops, ribs and dumplings for appetizers and then orange beef, chicken with three types of nuts, and Beijing duck for the main course.  It was so delicious!!   On July 29th I began my enormous tour.  I woke up at 7:30AM.  I went to Essa Bagels for breakfast.  Then I walked to Rockefeller Center.  Unfortunately the weather wasn'y good enough for me to go up to the observatory.  Next I walked well over 30 blocks north.  Along the way I took a stroll through Central Park.  It's so interesting to be in the metropolitan jungle one minute and then absorbed in Central Park's nature the next. Finally I arrived at the MET.  It was a terrific museum.  I viewed all kinds of Egyptian artifacts, followed by the American wing and then Greek and Roman artifacts.  They also had a good collection of art including works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet and more.  There was also a special visiting exhibit of artifacts from Kabul, Afghanistan.     Next I walked ten more blocks to the Guggenheim.  Although the design of the building was interesting, I wasn't too excited about the museum.  I enjoyed a Picaso and the Kadinsky exhibit, but beyond that it was a bit too bizarre. Things became a bit stranger at the Whitney Museum.  There was a good collection of Edward Hopper paintings, but everything else was too "artsy" for my tastes. My next stop was the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).  I loved this museum!  I saw my favorite Van Gogh, "Starry Night".  They also had my favorite Marc Chagall painting "I and the Village".  There were also paintings by Picasso, Gaugin, Monet, Cezanne, Matisse, Dali, Pollock and Warhol.   My fifth and final museum of the day was the Museum of Natural History.  Here they had one of the biggest, if not the biggest, collection of dinosaur bones.  It was an excellent exhibit not only of dinosaurs, but also of numerous other extinct creatures.I also loved how this museum had a huge collection from other cultures such as Native Americans, African people, Asian, ancient Mexican cultures and many more.  They also had a fantastic special exhibit on the Origins of Man with all kinds of skulls and skeletons of man through his periods of evolution over a million years. My last stop on my self tour was a Belgian bar.  I honestly don't understand how there aren't more Belgian bars since they have such great beer.  I tried four different varieties before crawling back to my hotel.  I showered up and then got together with my parents and aunt.  We went to Carmines for some Italian food and a surprise party for my aunt with numerous other relatives.

Bram and Stacey drove down and then we drove to Oleta State Park to go kayaking.  Unfortunately the one day we choose it's raining and lightning.  So we head across the street to the Ale House.  It was raiing so bad so we had a picnic in the car with the food and drinks we had.  Eventually we went inside to play some pool and have some more drinks.In the early afternoon we ventured back to oleta and although the sky was gray and it continued to drizzle we still took out the kayaks.  We rode out into the intercoastal waterway and hung out on Beer Can Island awhile before making our way back.
