Saint-Pierre, Saint Pierre and Miquelon

bonjour! arrived here a bit later than anticipated and thus lost good daytime hours and light for some photo'ing. plus everything was closed. went to check out the bar scene at night. there are 4 bars. they are all filled with guys. everywhere is either borderline 16 or above 50. um... great. even the live music was a bit lame. at least they were serving desperados and fin du monde beers.otherwise, all there is to do is walk and explore. the streets are empty. the croissants are under-cooked, but the baguettes are nice and the wine is cheap! i'm hoping the fog clears so i can do some hiking in the mountain soon...

60 km down the 210 from marystown found me in fortune, once fortuna, an old old basque fishing settlement. ye auld lore had it that fishermen from france and spain would venture out here in ancient times to drop their buckets in and bring up loads of fish without effort. so says giovanni cabotto at least.arrived at 1:30 for the 2:45 ferry, only to find out thata) the ferry was busted and the replacement doesn't leave until 3:30b) there's nothing to see or do in fortunec) the 3:30 ferry was really expected around 4:30d) 4:30 was a stretch and really it would leave after 5:00and to top it off, mary brown's undercooked her taters!

so having done a few road trips in the previous weeks, to signal hill, cape spear and the northern part of the avalon peninsula, the next road trip took me to the burin. but let me recap how i got there. along the TCH and turning left at goobies (yes, i'm not lying), didn't make it as far as dildo, but did pass way too many irish-named villages, and finally reaching marystown. there are 2 mcdonald's here. one in the walmart and one on its own. that's all i'll say about that.here i stayed the night, but for a reason - to see my friend laura whom i haven't seen since high school graduation more or less. must say it was a really cool reunion. she toured me around the area, which is really barren but pretty. kinda reminds me of a mix of ireland and norway. but i guess it's just newfoundland.was really great catching up with laura though, getting filled in on the gossip of our former classmates, and catching up on life post-high school with each other.next stop... la belle france!

why do I jinx myself? I found the evil denominator: aer lingus, and the new rule is to never fly them as the last flight at the end of a long trip; it happened at the end of my euro backpacking and now after asia. I arrived in dublin but my bag didn't. irony of all ironies too b/c before boarding in amsterdam I inquired if my bag made the flight, and it had. when I attempted to find out the same in london, their computers were not working. grrrrr.

nope. nothing's happened. it's been easy enough to maneuver about. just a few longer than usual line-ups but i've been in no rush. am enjoying the free internet at zurich insurance's station. it's been fine and the lay-over isn't long. but i still can't stand heathrow. last one though! (for the near future at least). now if only aer lingus stays on time...

i am no longer in kansas. not that i ever was. but landing in schipol was a bit of culture shock - i was no longer the only "gwylo".the flight itself was decent enough. but as a personal record, it was my longest solo flight and possibly my longest direct flight (12 hrs).found out the most important information of the day as i exited the plane: barca beat man u 2-0 to win the champions league.and now it's more waiting for more flights, silently grumbling that i didn't re-arrange things and just fly direct to dublin from amsterdam. oh well. one last dance with heathrow...

hello from KLIA's nice free internet kiosk's.made it back to KL, or rather the airport, and am now killing time before boarding my looooong flight to amsterdam. am happy that i was able to get my bags checked all the way through to dublin though! (just hoping they'll meet me there when i arrive)worst part of any trip is the last few hours when it's pre-leaving time. can't complain though b/c it was a great holiday, got to see and do lots, and had a great travel buddy for the bulk of it, followed by amazing hospitality from the locals in both penang and s'pore. (if you guys are reading this, make sure to come visit canada so i can show you around... and see you, of course).so long asia! until next time...

i have no idea where to begin. took my first solo flight in awhile over to the island state of penang to see my long lost UCD/PMC brothers and sisters. was met at the airport by vidhya who whisked me around on an informative tour of the east coast of penang. we picked up s'more peeps on the way and i was treated to a nice road-side hawker to sample on whatever they put in front of me (including frog legs, malaysian-style). went back to miss angela's abode but not before checking out the beach at night with the crazy rip-tide waves.next morning was dim sum! (prawn-themed). went touring around with angie and saw somemore PMC guys cramming away for their up-coming finals. met up with the bigger gang once again for dinner; this time it was seafood and my first taste of crab.all in all, penang was meant to catch-up with the lads and ladies that went back to PMC a few years back, but what i also got was amazing hospitality from (in no particular order) angie, vidhya, krish and gauri. and the only item of food that i ate while there that i had previously eaten before was... water. impressive. thanks a bil!was great to see everyone and sad to leave, also b/c it means *drum roll* end of holiday. boooo.
