On Sunday, September 13th, volunteers gathered in South Portland near the Maine mall for Volunteer Day.  The mission for the day was to clean up trash, build a bridge, finish a kiosk and other tasks related to building walking trails for SP residents to enjoy. The best thing to me was the range of ages who participated -- from very young of 4 or 5 to young at heart of any age!

At the Jewel Gardens Glass Blowing Experience guests are able to watch a demonstration of professional glass blowers at work, and then get a chance to assist the blower to make their own hand-blown glass ornament.  Afterward there is a "fancy tea" in the tearoom of the Jewel Garden Restaurant.

Glacier Point Wilderness Safari -- The first photos are from the 6-hour tour offered by Chilkat Guides begins with a trip through the Lynn Canal from Skagway to Haines, followed by a bumpy bus ride deep in the forest to the team's eqiupment shack (they call it their min-REI), and then a short hike along a wooded trail to the edge of the lake, and then a canoe ride along the lake to beautiful Davidson Glacier where the canoes come withing 70 yards of the glacier's edge.  It's an awesome trip.Sales and Service Desk and other Skagway photos -- The remaining photos are of our Sales and Service team at the desk and on the ships we work for Holland America (Ryndam and Statendam) and various photos from around Skagway, including the Ghost and Goodtime Girls tour.  Enjoy!  cy

This album contains photos from two great tours available in southeast Alaska:  Musher's Camp and Sled Dog Experience (Alaska Excursions) and the Haines Eagle Preserve Float Adventure (Chilkat Guides).  We sell these at the tour desk, so on our days off we are able to go on these tours when there are open seats since first-hand knowledge is helpful for better informing our guests who are trying to decide among the many "shore excursions" offered in the Skagway area.  Both were great trips and I'd highly recommend either one.  I'll let the pictures do the rest.  Cheers!  cy

Haines is located just south of Skagway, a mere 17 miles and only 30 minutes by sea on the Lynn Canal fjord, but a much longer 359 miles via the highway.  It's a small town with a history steeped in fishing tradition, and fortunately the town still retains much of it's original charm and "real" character.  The town was the setting for the movie "White Fang" and the sled used in the movie was made by a local craftsman.  Haines is also the home of the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, created by the State of Alaska in 1982 to protect the world's largest concentration of Bald Eagles and their critical habitat.  Thousands of eagles migrate here every fall and winter (I'll post photos soon of the float trip I took along the preserve in early August).  Enjoy the photos!  cy

After two long months, Tim finally made it to Skagway in July, arriving in time for the July 4th celebration and just before our 25th wedding anniversary on July 16.  It will be tough to see him leave again later this month, but I look forward to his return in September before I finish for the season.

In addition to working at the Liarsville Gold Rush Camp in the gift shop in costume, I also have another job "dock repping" for both the gold camp and jeep tours.  I explain dock repping in detail on the blog (ctssyount.blogspot.com), but here are some photos that illustrate what this is like.  Basically we meet cruise ship passengers at the dock and escort them to their coaches for their desired tours -- not exactly rocket science.  Since one of the tours I dockrep for is the Yukon Jeep Tours, I can also go on that tour for free so I can better inform guests what it's like.  The photos at the end of this album are from that tour.  Enjoy!

The photos in this album illustrate working in the recreated goldrush camp at "Liarsville" on the edge of town in Skagway.  The camp is a recreated goldrush camp similar to what would have been seen during the Yukon gold rush of 1898.  The performers work in full 1898 costumes.  I work in the giftshop, also in period clothing.

I live and work on the north end of Skagway at a recreated gold rush camp called Liarsville.  This area of town got its name back in 1898 when reporters came to Skagway during the gold rush and -- rather than giving true "eye witness reports" from the grueling White Pass Trail to the Yukon gold fields, they wrote bogus reports claiming miners became rich after taking an easy wagon trail up the White Pass to find potato-sized nuggets of gold.  When miners came back down the arduous trail -- many without finding any gold at all -- they ran into these same "reporters" who stayed comfortably in the camps in Skagway.  Hence the name "Liarsville" was coined.
