With each new journey comes more lessons I learn about myself and this incredible world which surrounds me. I see great places, meet lovely people, and know more about who I am. It seems that each travel experience shapes me, challenges me, and teaches me to trust my Lord in new ways. This journey to Australia is no different.Before I came I had not traveled on my own. Although I was sure it would all work out, I was also challenged to leave behind my old way of doing things. My mind had a tendency to rely on others for comfort, companionship, and direction. Alone, I find myself tuning in more to my Lord, His plans for me, and how I will walk alongside of Him in my journeys. It is definitely different, but oh so good. I find new ways to see the world, experience new situations, and broaden my horizons. I have a feeling traveling solo is something I will again embrace.I've learned much about strangers, and how quickly they can turn into close friends. In one moment you know nothing of them, yet you meet eyes and know that you will experience connection, conversation, and companionship. You smile, you laugh, and you fall for each other. Not a falling in love kind of thing, but a falling into friendship. It's precious, it's real, and it challenges you as a person.The challenge comes because in this new friendship you can be whomever you choose. There is no one to set boundaries or determine personalities. Will I be my age? Will I be young and in love? Will I be married but separated? Will I be me? Will I be the me I have always dreamed of? What if the me I am is the me I have dreamed of? Maybe I will be her. Petty questions, but ones that bring new life.With each encounter, I was able to shed a layer of me, leave it on the table, and maybe even let my new companions examine it a bit. Do they like me? Do they not? That has already been determined at first glance, after that initial meeting. Our friendship is already determined, not dependent. So I do not have to be anything else but the woman I am, the woman I desire to be. Me. Realizing more and more, I might even like the me I see. Being away also forced me to think about my life as a whole. I am perplexed at how I got to this point, but realize it's not such a bad place to be. Even though My Love is gone, the life I have yet to live can still be full and rich. My love can be content because my love can be found in My Lord. He will meet me in a cool dark night, he will meet me in a lonely street corner, or even a deserted beach. He will surround me not just with His arms, but with His world. A precious world I am grateful to see. How can I not be content in that? How can I not stand before my God thankful for His abundance.Circumstances, they will change throughout the course of my life. I will have years of joy, and seasons of sorrow. I will be able to stand on mountaintops, and fall tumbling into valleys. Who am I when I get to the bottom? Am I the same person who was standing at the highest peak? Does it matter who I am? It does, it definitely does.Life is short, the last several years have taught me that. In a blink of an eye, time passes, life changes, foundations crumble. What I thought was real, can seem only an illusion. I can sit in the theater downcast and broken, I can wallow in the valley, or I can learn from it all. I can allow defeat to destroy me, or I can realize that the battle is not my own. I can stand up more determined than ever. As I stand I am not bruised and beaten, but somehow stronger than I have ever been. My God reminds me that things are not always how they seem. Hillsong reminded me on Good Friday, that the reality of what God is doing can be confused by what we think is happening. As Jesus died on the cross those looking on had to feel like it was over, their hope demolished. When I look at my life, that same despair can set in. My hopes, my dreams, my love, somehow gone in the blink of an eye. Nothing makes sense, nothing feels right about it, but from the details we can see, things do not look good. God, has He turned His back on my life, on the marriage He designed, on the family He put together? Everything in me shouts that my Lord does care, He is working, and He has not turned His back on me. In fact everyday He beckons me with the question, will I believe? My reply, Oh Lord, Help me overcome my unbelief. Teach me to have the faith You long for and desire.I'm thankful that I know that Jesus did not stay in the grave. I'm thankful that I know He is alive and at work. The perception of His defeat, was not reality. This is also the case in my life. How good it is to know the hope of my salvation and the way my life rests in His constant care. Nothing is out of His control, even when it appears that Satan has won.It is in this knowledge that I now better understand Jesus when He begged us not to worry, not to be anxious, and to continually pray and petition Him for our requests. It makes sense that a world designed by the hand of God can also be orchestrated by him. I don't understand why He allows us to make such destructive choices, or why He allows pain and suffering, but all I know is that He is God and He can be trusted.So my time in Australia was filled with reminders. From the moment I got off the plane He showed me the body of Christ is everywhere and is reaching out on His behalf. He taught me to step out in faith, even when the actions might go against my human nature. He taught me that tears, can be okay, and I don't have to always run from them. In those moments He talks to me, He guides me, and He shows me the way He wants me to go. When I listen, instead of screaming out in anguish, He blesses me. He gives me exactly what I need, and He blows me away with His goodness.Australia was not a trip filled with unbelievable sights. Instead it was a trip filled with an unbelievable God. I was surrounded with His captivating love. He knew the exact thing I needed. I didn't need incredible pictures to hang on the wall, or romance to tickle my heart, I needed to be shown the mighty hand of God and the incredible way He can be trusted with my life.Sydney was delightful. The Great Barrier Reef was incredible. White water rafting was a rush. Cape Trib was interesting. Yet, the Normans were a gift from God. Rachel was a complete blessing. The experience of walking with my Lord, something I hope to never forget. As I head back home, may I remember how to breathe in and out in line with my Savior. May I be the Kelli Anne Curtis He created me to be, and marvel at the way He can transform me into His image. Lord, let me look like you. Wherever I may be, let me look like You.

Had a great day at Hillsong and the Blue Mts.  I'll write about it later.  I have my last night sleep and then I head back to the USA tomorrow evening.  Not thrilled, but God will get me through.  Go ahead and start praying for me back at home...hard stuff.  Somehow traveling the world is easy, dealing with real life...not so easy.  God has plans for me though and I'll just keep my eyes on Him.  He's the same God in Australia as in Indiana, so that is good news.  He is faithful, I'm sure of that.

I had an intense day white water rafting on the Tully River.  The day was incredible and I am absolutely exhausted.  I'm headed to bed.  Goodnight from halfway around the world.I joined Raging Thunder Adventure Company in search of some fun on the Torry River. I had no idea what I was getting into, but it was certainly a thrill of a lifetime. As the bus ride headed to the river the grey sky did not greet us with open arms. It almost seemed it had turned it's back on us, telling us to go home. We weren't swayed from coming, and the excitement seemed to build even though the sunshine did not.We were given some basic rafting instructions and then headed to our boat for a crash course in rafting. The bright yellow boat seemed smaller than I had imagined, but the eight of us climbed in with a smile on our face and a hint of fear in our eyes. Marty, our river guide, tried to teach us how to raft as a team and brave the thrilling waters together. At the start, we were not very impressive.I was given the back corner of the boat and was warned that it is sometimes called the ejector seat. This meant I was likely to be thrown out of the boat at any unlikely moment. This caused me to be a bit more cautious, but I was eager to get going.Our fearful leader, Owen, was put in the front of the boat and asked to lead our team. He shouted, One, Two, One, Two, in an attempt to get us rowing together. We tried to listen and do our best, although our best was a bit weak. With the first raging rapid, we survived, and were gaining confidence. Owen took a tumble into the rushing water, but managed to come out laughing. We all chuckled at our leader not being able to stay in the boat.We tested out our equipment by taking a swim down the cool rushing river. My jacket held me up just fine, and my helmet did it's job beautifully. I practiced my rescue position and hoped I wouldn't really need to use it. It was fun to sit in the water and let it pull me down the beautiful river. I set my head back and thanked God that the rain had stopped and the sun was now shining.After a bit of a struggle to get back in the boat, the fun began. My team and I worked together to dodge many boulders and rapids which seemed to attract us like a magnet. We paddled with force, trying to steer clear of the looming danger. The rocks did laugh at us from time to time as we banged into them, of course they didn't move a bit and we were shot off in whichever direction they chose. Our leader was often tossed in, we then joined the rocks in a belly full of laughter. Our tired bodies could not hide the fun we were experiencing.We took a break from the river ride to go rock jumping. We had two opportunities to climb the high rock tower and plunge into the cool rushing river. I climbed up as fast as I could, ready to take my big jump. I contemplated diving, but the weight of my helmet, and whatever was hidden below forced me to think again. With a quick jump and shout of glee, I headed for the water. It was pure delight. The second jump was even higher so many folks stayed in the boat, but I ran up the rocks as fast as I could. The fun of cascading through the air seemed to call my name. I ran off the edge of the cliff and smiled as I hit the brisk water. Not sure when I will again get this opportunity, but loved every minute of it.After another ride through the water in our raft we found our way to a BBQ lunch on the shore. I mingled with my teammates. New York, Germany, Ireland, and Indiana were represented amongst our team members. We all swapped travel stories and insights in the journeys we had experienced. I have to admit, it made me long to feed my addiction for travel which I try to appease so often. The reminder of the economy and the blessing of having a job I enjoy helped remind me that coming home will also suffice for now.The afternoon brought much more enjoyment. The stages of rapids picked up, and we united in our efforts to ride the river as a team. I grinned from ear to ear as I took in the rush of facing a roaring river. The beauty of the Torry River captivated me, and reminded me of the immense blessings in my life. As the water hit my face, it brought joy and thankfulness. My body was worn out in the midst of the journey, but thrilled that it could be a part of this amazing experience.Often times I also had to face the river with determination. It seemed to be fighting against me. As we were instructed by our guide we were told to hold on, get down, move right, move left, or paddle forward or backward. Being a good listener was vital. I also tried to listen to the river. As the boat shot me to and fro I held on with everything in me. The falling waters and raging rapids pulled hard on me, asking me to come for a fearful swim. I used all that I was taught to try and fight back. I succeeded in this battle never falling out of the boat on my own doing. Owen on the other hand fell in five times, one of them being pretty scary for us. I reached to try and save him, but his life jacket broke and he was pulled under. Eventually he was rescued and we were glad to have him back.Our river guide did toss me in once, but I fought back when he was least expecting it. A quick kick and he found his way into the river as well. He took revenge on us all with our last rapid we faced. We all joined in a huddle and let the waterfall toss us from the boat. What fun we had!I enjoyed this experience in every way possible. I look forward to the next time I can rage the rapids of white water rafting. I hope next time it can be with friends, these folks became my friends, but I also know it would take the friendships I do have to new levels. I'm ready to plan a summer trip!

Cape Tribulation, Australia

I am headed up to Cape Tribulation tomorrow.  I'll be gone for a few days.  I'm headed to the rainforest, should be interesting.  I've met a friend to go on the trip with, she and I are sharing a room at the hostel in Cairns.  This is our home base but we're taking a tour tomorrow for a few days.  Then I'm headed white water rafting on the Tulley River.  So don't worry...I just saw a boat that said...Gotcha Covered on the side.  I felt like God was just reminding me, maybe reminding you worry worts too...He's got me covered.  Love to you all.The details...The journey up to Cape Tribulation was an interesting one. Rachel and I knew we were headed to a mysterious land, but we didn't know how weird it would be. We took a strange bus ride up the beautiful coast, stopping along the way at amazing lookout points and the lush rainforest. Eventually we found our way to PK's Jungle Resort, it was really just a mega hostel and campground. The shared dorm was a bit odd, but we made friends with our bunkmates.Rachel and I wandered out to the beautiful beach, in search of the big Cape Trib attraction. We never did find it, instead we were just met with beach, lush rainforest, and a feeling that some random creature was out to get us. We had the blue ocean water on one side, containing a warning about some stingers that we should avoid. On the other side was the rainforest which we had been told contained huge attacking lizards, a plant that attacks your nervous system, and water in these parts always holds the threat of crocodiles. We felt surrounded and decided we would take the stingers if we had to choose. Thankfully the water never got us boxed in and we enjoyed the afternoon sitting on the beach.Cape Trib didn't have much to offer beside the rainforest and beach. We just enjoyed what we could of each and took a hike up to the lookout point the next day. We met Kate & Nessa, other English friends that were sharing a dorm with us. It was a hot day that eventually led us to the pool. We hung out while a spider hung watching over us.That afternoon we found our way to boat ride up the Daintree River with crocodiles floating nearby. It was a nice peaceful journey, and the crocs didn't seem to mind us staring at them. We were just glad we were not in the water joining them.We headed back to our hostel and found our way out with Kate and Nessa. Although we were exhausted it was a good night out. I slept well in preparation for my White Water Rafting Adventure the next day. The fun continues.

Korunda, Australia

As I made it back from the reef I realized that I needed to find a more social place to stay. So I have checked into the Cairns Girls Hostel. Within just a few minutes of my arrival I met Rachel, another girl traveling alone in Cairns for a bit. She and I are venturing up to Cape Tribulation. I have no idea what I am about to experience, but I am hoping it will be good.Today I found my way up to Korunda. I took a very scenic sky rail which took me over the rainforest canopy. There were some stunning views of the rainforest, mountains, and ocean in the background. The sky rail ended in a small tourist town of Korunda. I wandered through a butterfly sanctuary and took a scenic train back through the rainforest and overlooking the gorge. It was a nice quiet day. Rachel and I found dinner and settled in for our big trip tomorrow.Hoping for another exciting journey to a new place. We'll see what happens.

What I've experienced over the last few days is one that I am not sure I can explain. The Great Barrier Reef is one of those places that you just have to take in yourself. Pictures, don't have any...Words, I will try. Honestly though, nothing will compare to you taking the plunge yourself.For me, the blue ocean water looks very similar to other trips I have been on. It's a lovely shade surrounded by mountains. It took us an hour long boat ride to get there, which did not compare in any way to the beauty of Patagonia. My mind was excited to see the Reef, but I did not know what to expect. From the boat, it just looks like water. This is why I don't have any good pictures.With my snorkel gear on, I jumped into this deceiving boring ocean. My eyes didn't see much at first, just some lovely blue water. I swam and swam ahead in the direction that I was hoping was the Reef. That swim was a great journey leading to another world I have never known.As if sitting in an IMAX theater, my mind tried to take in all that surrounded me. The coral surrounded me and welcomed me to it's world. As I opened the door to my new home, I was blown away by all the inhabitants. So many fish were swimming by, saying their sweet hellos. Each was clothed in the brightest of colors I had never seen before. Boldly they gripped my attention and wouldn't let go. I kicked and kicked through each new room, delighted by all I saw.The reef carried on as far as I could see. There were many different layers, depths, and designs. My eyes were met with new shapes, hues, and somehow even friends. I hung out in school after school of fish, captivated again and again. I saw sea creatures I had never even imagined, and was shocked at the way they allowed me into their world without hesitation. Some even reached out to shake my hand and say hello. I quivered at the touch, and realized my senses were being heightened to new levels. Nothing in me wanted to leave this new found world.Eventually the thought of lunch, and the guides calling me back in, led me back on the boat. I was met with the other newbies who had joined the "Reef Encounter" that day. The four of us joked about the expectations we had and the disappointments in the old boat which was now our home. Quickly I was gaining friends, needed friends.Jenny and I allowed Lance to talk us into a go at scuba diving. I wanted to see the Reef from every angle possible, and diving seemed a good way to do it. Although Jenny couldn't master equalizing her ears, I dove in with little problems. Lance and I ventured to the ocean floor with tanks on our backs, oxygen in our lungs, and smiles on our faces. They called it an intro dive, all I know is that it introduced me into a world that I long to know more.Not only could I see this incredible new world from the top looking in, but now I could be a part of it from all angles. The ocean bottom taught me a lesson of new oceanography and enveloped me in sheer awe. The bright colors which danced against the coral could again be seen, but also the lovely nemos, star fish, marlins, and such held my attention. At one point we found a patch of sand and rested on the bottom. The sea creatures swarmed around us, an unbelievable sight.My dive was something I will remember always and hopefully become an expert in one day. Whether snorkeling, swimming, and simply floating along the reef, I love interacting with this incredible sight. I will surely be back. The two days and seven different trips in the water were not enough. You should plan a trip yourself, there is nothing like it on earth.

Cairns, Australia

The rain of Sydney led me up to Northeast Australia to the town of Cairns. This is my gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and other adventurous activities. Leaving the comfort of friendship has been a challenge. The place screams of beautiful backpackers and a good night on the town. So I nestle in for a dip in the pool, sun on my face, and time with My Lord. Sweet, sweet time to soak up all I have been experiencing is something I have needed.I talked with Maggie, my hostess, about possible adventures and decided on an overnight adventure to the Reef. I'm not looking forward to getting up early tomorrow, but I am excited about seeing this amazing sight. I'll be there for two days, should be wonderful. I hope to have some remarkable memories to add to the list.Exactly how my time here in Cairns will unfold, I am not sure. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about the place. I was hoping for beautiful beaches, instead the waterfront brings lagoon and marshland. They say the lovely beaches are nearby though, so I will try and find them soon enough. Right now my eyes are on what lies beyond the beaches. The beautiful blue and unknown creatures are calling my name and I am thrilled to come running. I'll keep you posted.

I cannot begin to explain what a joy it has been to be in Sydney. I am now sitting in the airport about to embark on my next destination. I can only hope it will be slightly as good as the time I have had here. The highlight of this leg of my journey has definitely been the people. Feeling a part of family and friends on the other side of the world is captivating. Realizing I can just be me, and feel loved and cared for is remarkable. It boldly shouts the goodness of my Lord. And of course I need to shout a huge thank you to Ben & Sandy Norman, and their sweet kids Michael and Jessica. Their church family and friends have also been a huge blessing to me, thank you.Although I only saw a bit of Sydney, what I saw was perfect in every way. The town welcomed me in, claimed me as their own, and gave me the breath of fresh air that I needed. My trip on the ferry was glorious and the beach town of Manly that welcomed me was delightful. The surfer scene fit the picture perfect stereotype I had of Australia. The beaches are gorgeous, the sunshine radiates the comfort that I so needed. I rested there and just soaked up the joy of being in the present.As I headed back on the ferry I smiled at all God was showing me. The opera house stood tall, dominating the view of the harbor. The Harbor Bridge reminded me of the bridges being built in my life and the connections taking place because of my amazing God. I am humbled by it all.Although opera season has just ended my trip inside the opera house was overwhelming. Many magnificent minds and hands worked together to create a glorious sight. I kept telling myself I have to come back and experience it all again. The concert hall pulled me in to it's glory, begging me to come back for a real performance. I was blessed with hearing the organ prepping for a performance, aaahhh. I will surely be back.Wandering out of the opera house I found my way to the botanical gardens. I sat on the banks and took in this great city. Wandering through beautiful trees and greenery I was met with peace. Peace, is a word I am so excited to have finally been a part of. Overwhelming peace seems to hold my hand and envelope my heart. My God, thank you for standing alongside of me.My journey through the Sydney area was even more rich because of the Norman family. Our escapades to try and find Hillsong, resulted in disappointment and companionship. The church was recording a cd this weekend and there was not a service we could attend. We rushed to try and be a part of the concert, but the tickets were sold out. So, I was at the building, even journeyed downtown for the concert, but could be a part of neither. Very disappointing, but God knows what He is doing.Instead of a popular trip to Hillsong I was met with a friendly church belonging to the Normans. The sermon, the testimonies, they spoke right to me. They reminded me of God's faithfulness "when being ambushed." Ambushed...I could relate to that. So God wanted me there, that is for sure. I was then able to enjoy an Aussie BBQ with church friends. What fun, they laughed at the American in me, and I laughed at the Aussie in them. Perfect, absolutely perfect.Whether looking over Sydney in the tower, or being shaken by the OzTrek alongside of sweet Jessica, I am blessed that I was not alone. I am blessed that God knew just who should be standing by my side. As we ventured on the monorail, the Lord knew I needed to laugh at the joy seen in Ben & Michael and the kindness of Jessica and Sandy. As we rushed home God knew the comfort of that family unit was exactly what I needed to welcome me to this new amazing place.The trip to the coast and the wildlife refuge, were simple and delightful. It felt like a day with old friends, although I had only known some of them for a few hours. The kangaroos hopped nearby and even ate from my hand. Their claws were a bit vicious, but their bold hopping made me laugh out loud. The koalas were snuggled up comfortably sleeping, just like I had always knows them to be. Cute, cuddly, adorable. Many other animals shared a kindred moment and made for a great experience. We made our way to the coast for a beautiful view, and a lovely lunch, although the wind and rain challenged us a bit. We warmed ourselves with afternoon tea and good conversation. Truly amazing.Each evening I was blessed with the Norman family. Great food, good company, engaging conversation, led me straight to bed with contentment on my heart. I awoke this morning sad to be leaving my new friends, but excited to be escaping the rain. I am hoping for sunshine and good things to see. I am even praying for some new friends. It should be interesting, and I know it will be good.
