Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Back in the city again and Jo and I have some repairs done to the landy. I make the decision to go to Mayotte to visit Susana and bought a ticket. Had some fun nights out with the normal chaos thrown in. The time came for us to part ways and I sadly said goodbye to Safti and Jo. Jo was really brave setting off with a Landy all on her own into Tanzania
Kilwa Masoko, Tanzania

We stopped off on our way up to Dar to visit the islands of Kilwa. These islands were exceedingly wealthy in the middle ages when they served as an entrepot for the gold mined in present day Zimbabwe. In the 19th century Kilwa gained notoriety as a slave port the negative energy of which gives the place its creepy feel today. When the Portuguese discovered Kilwa their admiral d'Almeida recorded that he thought Kilwa to be the fairest city in all the earth before destroying it with his cannons. This was a really worthwhile stop and both J and I found it really interesting. After a couple of nights we headed up to dar
Msimbati, Tanzania

Finally we rose over the last hill and the ocean lay in front of us. We found a hotel which was fine until I pulled the washbasin off the wall by accident. Jo put me to bed and went to go and get help. We were even offered another night's free stay to compensate us for the inconvenience
Songea, Tanzania

A hard days driving and we only cover 200kms in 10 hrs. Pretty finshed we found an arb hotel in Songea and soon have located a fun pub. Dragging ourselves up the next morning we carried on the slog through the fairly desolate and monotonous scenery.
Ruarwe, Malawi

After some days back in N bay we headed drove to Usisya again. A couple of days and a sunken boat later we made it to Ruarwe. Leaping from our balcony into the lake first thing in the morning was a great way to wake up. Kim, the manager, spoilt us and we were truly sad to leave after a couple of days. Sus needed to fly back to Mayotte for work so back we drove again to NBay after catching the ferry back to Usisya.Back in NBay we discovered that Jo (Clayton's girflriend) had arrived from Tanzania. The staff at Butterfly were doing their damndest to hide the fact that I now had 2 girlfriends at butterfly. They're such sweeties - I think they were greatly relieved if a little perplexed when I explained that Jo was my friends girlfriend and we would just be travelling together. So I said a sad farewell to a madly jealous Susana and she set off on the ferry for her epic 5 day slog back to Pemba for her flight home.Jo brought a sparkle to Butterfly and great times were had by all. We went back to Usisya and Ruarwe before heading north to Chincheche, Karonga and Tanzania.
Nkhata Bay, Malawi

Great to be back with mates at butterfly. Spent a night and then headed to Chincheche for the festival. The first night was a disappointment as the organisers killed the music at 3am due to the djs being tired !! We made ourselves rather unpopular by missioning back to NBay and returning with our own sound system. Things improved from there with Andy Cato arriving and playing a hot set. After the fest back to Butterfly for a couple of days and then back to Usisya.
The drive across Moz was strange but much more pleasant with some company. In one area we tried to confirm we were on the right road but everyone we tried to ask dropped everything and fled into the bush. Something strange had definitely been happening there. When morning came we gathered ourselves together, dropped off D and continued north to Nkhatha Bay.
(without diving in what's supposed to be one of the most beautiful dive areas in the world. Bugger. We set off back to Pemba and the long drive back to Malawi for the "lake of stars" festival. We met loads of cool people on Ibo many expats and Saffers building lodges in Moz. As always many of the Saffers had questionable liberal pedigrees.
