Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada

I managed to organise a flight from Zurich to Toronto via Reykjavik (Iceland) arriving in Toronto 22nd July.
Leslie and Reg (along with Jock & Monty their 2 Shelties) met me to drive to Parry Sound on Georgian Bay.
As it was dark on arrival I was unable to see the view of the lake until the morning. What a sight it was when I surfaced the next morning - water and islands as far as the eye could see. The lake is about 20m from the house where I went swimming most days. Leslie and I would sometimes go in for a dip to have our daily bath and wash our hair - serious fun. Leslie is a wonderful cook (so are you Reg) and kept me fed with some wonderful foods from the area. Some of the highlights were Lobster, Pickerel (fresh water fish), corn, ribs, turkey, salmon camenzola (camembert & gorgonzola combined) blueberries we picked from the bush plus fresh herbs and vegies from Leslie's garden.

KAYAKING
I have finally learnt to kayak!!!! Leslie joined me and we had so much fun on the water for about 2 and half hours learning the basics. Forward and back paddling, turning around but with the best part falling out of the canoe to attempt to recover and swin out from underneath the kayak.
Reg and Leslie have a kayak so I was able to go out a couple of times on my own to practice. The peacefulness when you are out there is very special. All you can hear is the water, the wind and the birds. Just to sit there in the Kayak without paddling and let the wind and the water take you is the most amazing feeling.

FLYING
Flying over the islands (30 000) and seeing how many there are was an amazing experience. Taking off and landing on the the water is an amazing experience which I love too. The view to see all the houses on the tiny islands. The weather was in my favour and to see the horizon on a clear day was incredible.

Most days we went for a walk through the forrest; everyday was drinks in the gazebo or on the deck at 4:40/5pm; swimming in the lake or watching the olympics.

We went out on the boat a couple of times to fish, witness a sunset or to just enjoy the scenery. I witness ed a full moon, am amazingingly beautiful sunrise and one amazing sunset on an evening cruise on a local tour boat.

Thankyou Reg and Leslie for a wonderful stay in your special place on this amazing planet of ours.
Mannedorf, Zurich, Switzerland

Hi everyone,
To bring you up to date on the last two weeks.

Barbara and Chris have been absolutley wonderful taking me places and suggesting places for me to go.
Firstly the summer weather - days range from cold 16° to 31° hot and humid; raining to clear blue and sunny.
Week before last it rained for 3 days which basically kept us indoors reading, I have managed to get through 3 books while I have been here.

The house is half way up the hill in Mannedorf overlooking the Lake of Zürich which I can`t get enough of as the colours of the green hills on the other side and the sky are constantly changing.

Chris is 2 IC for the Swiss Para Olympic Team and is off to Beijing so the first Sunday after I arrived I went to a Para sports meeting for all ages and was impressed to see the size and layout of the Swiss training facility in Magglingen which is the equivalent of our AIS.

Lots of people here walk, ride bikes, do nordic walking, trecking etc so the sports stores here are amazing. The choice of shoes, clothes for all outdoor activities is incredible so have been doing a spot of shopping. After having to throw out my Merrills I bought in Oz before I left, which I wasn`t happy about as they cost a heap and they wore out, barbara took me shopping to buy new shoes. It was difficult deciding from the huge selection they have here.

I have visited the Fhiehfelden which is an enormous waterfall on the border of Switzerland and Germany. They have had an extraordinary amount of rain plus the melting snow, so the water was rushing at an incredible speed over the rocks.

I travelled to Luzern on a beautiful sunny day and fell in love with the city absolutely beautiful - old buildings and amazing shops - yes more shopping.

ZERMATT & the MATTERHORN
The highlight of the two weeks would definitely be the Matterhorn. We stayed in a small hotel in Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn. No cars are allowed in the village, so we parked inthe village before Zermatt and caught the train. It had been a very warm sunny day so on arrival in Zermatt walking up the main street we caught site of the Matterhorn in all its glory clear and sharp without cloud surrounding the tip.
Unfortunately the next day was a little cloudy and showery but after catching 2 cable cars up one of the mountains we managed to complete a 10 km walk passing 4 lakes with views to glaciers, waterfalls and other snow capped mountains in the area. I loved all the flowers in the fields - imagine yellow, purple, pink, white and red. I was unable to get a photo of all together so picked a bunch along the way and took one back at the hotel.
The last day turned out to be sensational weather form the time we woke up so we went to the top of little Matterhorn at 4000m where you can walk inside a glacier, see the Matterhorn and the Italian ski slopes and ply in snow. It was absolutely breathtaking and can only imagine how spectacular and beautiful the mountains wozuld be in winter.

It is with a little sadness I leave Mannedorf and my home for the last two weeks but it is time to move on.
Tomorrow I fly to Toronto, Canada via London and Reikjavik on Icelandair (cheapest at the time on the internet)
No idea what I will be doing yet but will take it as it comes and enjoy the next 6 weeks before returning to London on the 3rd September.

Thankyou to Barbara and Chris, you have been wonderful, I will miss you.
Take care everyone
Love you all
Carol
Bilbao, Basque, Spain

20th June we crossed the border into Spain the only indication being a small amount of police and a sign that said "Welcome to Spain".
With countries now belonging to the EU no one is interested in passport control.
We decided to stay on the coast at San Sebastien which is a beautiful city on the water. we caught the bus into the city outside our hotel to begin discovering our first Spanish town.
The old section, where all the best food and bars are, have streets too narrow for cars. People were out everywhere walking talking drinking. We checked out a few bars and found one that looked loke it had great Tapas and set about working out how to order.
The selction is incredible and we found it so hard to choose everything from fish to meats, cheese, frittata, seafood and sardines.
It cost us £10 ($16) for 5 things and a large glass of red wine.

21June was spent driving to Bilbao via Gernika which is the town on which Picasso based his painting Gernika. They have the most amazing Peace Museum which has been awarded a peace prize for it's work.
One thing we have discovered about spain, everything shuts between 2 & 4. So we have to plan to be either driving or eating at this time because there is absolutely nothing to do.

BILBAO This is the most incredible city and the main one I wanted to visit because of the Guggenheim Gallery. All along the river leading up to the museum are these amazing sculptures. The best being a huge spider that you can stand under and "Puppy" which is a huge dog at the entrance covered in flowers.
For me the Dali's were the highlight of the Guggenheim especially the clothes he designed with Schiaparelli and his jewllery.
The other highlight, apart from the food and wine, was the Belle D'Arte gallery with Spanish artists includinbg Goya.
We stayed 3 nights in Bilbao and caught the train to Portugalette to see the world heritage sight of the suspension bridge built in 1890.
