The setting is magnificent, against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, and only 13 km outside of Cape Town. <br>    <br>   The estate covers 528 hectares, and only indigenous South African plants are grown here. A diverse range of fynbos flora and forest grows naturally on the mountainside, and a number of trails lead through the natural Garden. The cultivated garden (36 hectares) displays collections of South African plants, particularly those from the winter rainfall region of the country.<br>   <br>   <b>Special features:</b><br>   <br>   The Botanical Society Conservatory displays South African plants which cannot be grown in the outdoor gardens. The conservatory features plants from a range of natural habitats, from high mountain peaks and shady forests to hot, dry deserts. In the main house, a large baobab tree dominates a display of succulents from the arid regions of Southern Africa. Special collections of bulbs, ferns and alpines can be seen in smaller corner houses. <br>   The Peninsula garden features some of the 2 500 plant species found on the Cape Peninsula. <br>   In the Water-wise garden you can learn how to create a garden which requires far less water and maintenance than a conventional garden. <br>   Close your eyes and let your olfactory sense take over in the Fragrance garden, which features plants with interesting textures and scents. <br>   The Medicinal garden demonstrates one of the oldest uses of plants, and teaches about the medicinal values of South African plants. The garden was redeveloped and extended to form the Useful Plants garden. <br>   The oldest part of the Garden is The Dell, a lovely oasis of tranquility featuring Colonel Bird's Bath, tree ferns and a variety of shade-loving plants. <br>   The Protea garden is exceptionally spectacular in winter and spring. During these months the proteas (family Proteaceae), cone bushes and serrurias are in flower. In early summer, pincushions provide a colourful display in yellow, orange and red. <br>   The Restio garden focuses on the incredible variety of texture and form found in the reed family (Restionaceae). <br>   The Kirstenbosch Restaurant caters for breakfast, lunch and dinner. <br>    <br><b>   Groot Constantia:</b><br>   <br>   The estate of Groot Constantia was founded as early as 1685 and assigned to the first Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, as an experimental farm for agricultural produce.<br>   <br>   Today Groot Constantia welcomes its visitors with the tranquility and beauty that charmed Simon van der Stel all those years ago.<br>   <br>   The Manor House, with its elegant gables, is a magnificent example of Cape Dutch architecture. Today it houses a cultural history museum, portraying the early years of Groot Constantia.<br>   <br>   The Cloete Cellar, the original wine cellar, dates back to 1791 and houses a Wine Museum, exhibiting various wine making equipment and especially wine storage and wine drinking vessels. The beautiful pediment gable above the cellar is one of sculptor Anton Anreith's masterpieces.<br>   <br>   Groot Constantia produces a range of excellent wines, and has over the years won numerous awards for both reds and whites. The wines may be tasted and bought at the tasting cellar, locally known as Bertram's Cellar, at the entrance of the Estate. There is also a souvenir and gift shop. In the production and maturation Cellar, tours and tastings take place daily.<br>   <br>   Visitors are offered a choice of excellent dining on the Estate. The Tavern Restaurant, built in the original bottling and maturation cellar, offers a variety of continental dishes and caters for larger functions. The graceful Jonkershuis Restaurant in the historic core of the Estate serves Cape Malay, classical and contemporary cuisine. What could be more satisfying than a delicious meal and a glass of excellent wine, surrounded by atmosphere and architecture, vineyards and breathtaking views.<br>   <br>   The Estate also offers stunning walks to various viewpoints. During the spring the strandveld is embroidered with a tapestry of multi-hued flowers, while in the Postberg section many antelope are to be seen in a setting that is as unique as it is idyllic. <br>120,000 years ago a young woman walked down the wet dunes next to the Langebaan lagoon, perhaps in search of food. Nick-named 'Eve', her perfectly preserved footprints were found in 1995. The history of Robben Island provides a fascinating look into the history of South Africa. Other highlights include the 18 metre (54 feet) lighthouse, erected in 1863, and extraordinary architecture of buildings built in the late 1800's, an old leper morgue used between 1846 and 1931 for a leper colony, the wreck of Fung Chung II, a taiwanese fishing vessel which foundered in 1977, the kramat (Muslim shrine) near the harbour and walls of the political prison, built over the grave of the Prince of Madura, who died in exile on this island in 1754. The natural heritage of Robben Island remains important: Elephant and lion roamed here millions of years ago, but today the fauna consists largely of steenbok, springbok and bontebok, and the birdlife includes a nesting colony of jackass penguins, and most important: Seals, after which the island is named. We will take you to De Bergkelder, or 'mountain cellar', which is a convulted series of cellar chambers cut into the bulk of Papegaai mountain. Within the eerie walls, packed wall-to-wall with wine and lit by candles, you are welcome to taste the fruits of Stellenbosch's renowned vineyards. We will depart from De Bergkelder for a visit to Neethlingshof, where we will enjoy a spectacular lunch among the vines, and taste the Neethlingshof's wines that bear a distinctive label depicting the prominent avenue of pine trees for which the estate is known. The views from the farm are quite spectacular. <br>   From here we will embark to the town of Paarl, one of the counrty's main wine-producing areas. Known for its quality wines and cheeses, we will visit Fairview, situated on the southern stretch of Paarl Mountain. The Swiss mountain goats are a popular attraction, and can be seen making their nimble way up and down the specially built staircase to their loft home. The views of the Franschoek Valley from the Franschoek Pass are unsurpassed.
