So many hostelsWe wake up, wonder "we're where?"Then onto the next. Having been back in the USA for almost 2 months now, we can look back on our adventure and appreciate some of the little things we missed, such as sleeping in the same bed for a consistent period of time. As you can imagine we saw the insides of a lotta rooms on this trip. We were struck by the range of decor, some pretty strange business names, and the various vibes from each hostel staff. Sometimes we had our own private room, sometimes we were sharing a dorm room with up to 10 people, and sometimes we had a 10 person dorm room all to ourselves! There were a few cities where we stayed in more than one hostel, and a few hostels where we stayed in more than one room over the course of a visit. For the most part places were actually pretty clean and the people were nice and helpful. Only twice were we grossed out enough to move hostels, and even then we found out Eli and Bron have different ideas about what is gross (a few places one of us loved while the other was horrified.) All in all a very interesting way to see (or sleep through) the world. So for your viewing pleasure- or horror- we present the Bed Blog, a photographic journey through the many, many hostels we stayed in through Latin America. Mazatlan, Pacific Coast, Mexico

What is there to sayAfter the ride of our livesThere's no place like homeThat's right, we made it.&nbsp; After 247 days on the road, nearly 100 cities in 14 countries, innumerable buses and a whole lotta hostels, we completed our journey through Latin America.&nbsp; We had a wonderful final week in<i> Mazatlan soaking in the sun and sea with Eli's folks.&nbsp; After passing the swine flu test at the Mazatlan airport we hugged Jim and Chris goodbye and boarded our flight back to the USA.&nbsp; Surreal, mind-boggling, amazing.&nbsp; We can't believe it was 8 months ago that we were clinging to each other on the flight to Chile, hurtling toward the unknown.Since arriving in Seattle to the open arms (and available bedroom) of Bron's parents, we've been fielding a lot of questions about the trip.&nbsp; So as our final blog we offer you this, the FAQ now that the trip is over.&nbsp; Enjoy!Q:&nbsp; What was your favorite part?&nbsp; This is the hardest question we get, as all the experiences were amazing and memorable in their own way.&nbsp; But if we had to name some highlights we'd say:Bron:&nbsp; Dirk-Peter's farm in Paraguay, the Bolivian salt flats tour, and Ecuador.&nbsp; And Bogota was my favorite capital city.&nbsp; Also Argentina rocks.&nbsp; Ooh and I love Uruguay.&nbsp; Man, this is hard!Eli:&nbsp; The Bolivian salt flats tour, Colombia, and Nicaragua.Bron: Ooh, yeah, and Nicaragua was awesome...Q: Any big surprises?E: I was amazed how nice the buses were in Argentina.&nbsp; And how few mosquitos there are in the Andes.&nbsp; And that there are glaciers on the equator!&nbsp; Wha' happened?!B: Wine in Argentina is $3 a bottle for a quality red!!&nbsp; Surprise!&nbsp; But seriously, I did not expect to meet as many people or make as many friends as we made along the way.&nbsp; Awesome people!&nbsp; Great friends!&nbsp; It was a real joy to travel for little pockets of time with interesting, like-minded folks that hopefully we will see again in some other corner of the world.Q:&nbsp; Was 8 months a good amount of time to travel?&nbsp; Too long?&nbsp; Too short?B and E:&nbsp; For us it was perfect.&nbsp; We didn't feel rushed, we saw just about everything we hoped to see, and by the end we were satisfied and ready (excited!) to come home.&nbsp; And the month in Mazatlan made for a perfect transition.Q:&nbsp; How did you do as far as packing?&nbsp; Overpacked?&nbsp; Underpacked?B and E: We can honestly say on this point...WE NAILED IT!&nbsp; We had about exactly everything we needed in our compact little backpacks, and still had a bit of room for books and extras picked up along the way.&nbsp; We brought some random things that ended up being essential (head lamps, a laundry bag (thanks Ceci and Tom!), calculator, duct tape) and only one thing that we ended up not really using (a sleeping sheet).&nbsp; And it took about exactly 8 months for our small supply of clothes to wear completely through. Q:&nbsp; What did you miss the most while on the road?B: Swimming, iced coffee, big fresh salads, and days without packing.E: Playing basketball, microbreweries, drinking water from a tap, and deli turkey.Q:&nbsp; Did you get sick of each other?B and E: Not really! There were, naturally, some annoying moments and some exhausted whining, but we genuinely enjoyed each others' company for 8 months.&nbsp; We're very lucky.&nbsp; It turns out we make a good team.Q:&nbsp; How many photos did you take?B:&nbsp; Waaaaay too many.&nbsp; Too many to count.&nbsp; Rough estimate?&nbsp; Somewhere around (over) 20,000.&nbsp; Q:&nbsp; What now?B and E:&nbsp; We are staying with Bron's parents (thank you!) in Seattle, looking for jobs (anyone have any leads?) and adjusting to normal life again.&nbsp; Bronwen has about 30 years of photo editing ahead of her on this body of work.&nbsp; Eli is hunting for a regular pickup hoops game.&nbsp; Bron has 3 triathlons lined up this summer.&nbsp; Eli has a list of projects he has been assigned around the house (we might as well be useful while we live here, right?).&nbsp; Generally we aim to become gainfully employed (again, if you have any leads...) and get into the swing of things here in Seattle.&nbsp; Exciting!Final Thoughts:&nbsp; Sigh.&nbsp; They say, and it can be true, that this is a small world.&nbsp; But the bigger truth is that its an enormous, wide, wild, crazy wonderful world filled with more sights and sensations, more beauty both natural and human-made than one person can imagine.&nbsp; The sheer diversity of landscapes, cultures, people, energy, transportation, fashion, food etc. that we experienced on this journey is astounding.&nbsp; And that's just in Latin America!&nbsp; We learned things about ourselves and each other (Bron likes to hike!&nbsp; Eli fears crazy bus drivers! ) and about the world on this trip that will impact us for the rest of our lives.&nbsp; It really surpassed our expectations.&nbsp; We highly recommend it.&nbsp; Throw caution to the wind, get out there and see some stuff!Finally, we want to sincerely thank you all for following along on this adventure.&nbsp; Thanks for all your comments on the blog and all your support and well wishes!&nbsp; We felt a lot less alone knowing you were sharing this journey with us.&nbsp; We love you and miss you all, and hope to see you soon somewhere in this beautiful world!

Mazatlan, Pacific Coast, Mexico

Mazatlán! Wahoo! Home-cooked meals, TV, firm beds. Vacation at last. That's right folks, we made it!&nbsp; Breathing a sigh of joy we touched down at Mazatlán airport on April 6, where Eli's parents Jim and Chris were waiting with enthusiastic hugs.&nbsp; To fill you in, the Houcks bought a house here about 7 years ago, renovated it with amazing style and live here for ¾ of the year. We cannot describe the wonderful feeling of arriving to a real home with a whole month of relaxation stretching before us!&nbsp; Heaven!! Mazatlán is an awesome city with a great historical section, beautiful beaches, fab restaurants, and a bumpin' nightlife.&nbsp; It's a festive town in a country that loves a festival. In our time here we've celebrated Semana Santa/Easter Week, Motorcycle Week, Jose Limon International Dance Week, and Swine Flu Panic Week (haha more on that later). Maz is also surrounded by interesting little towns, and we've taken some great day trips as well. Jim and Chris have created such a beautiful home it's really kind of hard to get out of the house, but we have managed to watch some hoops, see an amazing dance concert, accompany Chris to yoga class and...let's see...what else... Well, to be perfectly honest we've mostly been lounging around, enjoying Chris's amazing cooking, doing some cooking of our own (finally!) and generally doing nothing.&nbsp; Well, there is one little thing.&nbsp; Bronwen, in a moment of inspiration (or madness), signed up for the 2009&nbsp; Mazatlán Triathlon (set for April 25) about 2 months ago.&nbsp; So now here we were, with Bron's new sneakers, a borrowed mountain bike (thanks Greg!) and 3 weeks to train.&nbsp; The Triathlon ended up being a fantastic event and an absolute blast.&nbsp; Bron managed a great swim (straight out to sea and back), a not-too-embarrassing bike ride, and a steady (tired!) run with a strong finish.&nbsp; Jim, Chris, and Eli were kind enough to get up at 5 am to watch the race and made for a great cheering section.&nbsp; Bron even got a medal! (Okay, everyone got a medal, shhhh...) This last week the big news, of course, has been the swine flu.&nbsp; There are no reported cases in Mazatlán or in this area of Mexico, but swine flu hysteria is creeping into the town anyway.&nbsp; All schools are closed, events have been canceled, and its common to see people in surgical masks.&nbsp; In light of this development we decided to change our departure flight from Mexico City to Mazatlán, which means missing a few final stops on our tour in the name of safety (and convenience).&nbsp; So with one more week to go on this epic journey, we will continue to relax here at Hacienda Houck, soak in the Mexican sun, and hope our flight home gets out next week! Postscript: A few weeks ago Max Sr., the enthusiastic 80 year old owner of the Wax Palm Finca in Pasto Colombia, passed away after a brief illness. On April 30 my little brother Griff and his wife Kris brought their first child, Finn, into the world. In honor of those two special beings we bring you a Circle of Life Haiku extra. San Cristobal de las Casas, Pacific Coast, Mexico

Into the home stretchWe find history, culturePlus, guacamole! After our rapid fire highlights hitting tour&nbsp;of Central America, we found ourselves crossing the border into our 14th and final country of the trip - Mexico!&nbsp; We spent our first week&nbsp;on North American soil&nbsp;in Chiapas, Mexico's southernmost state.&nbsp; Our first&nbsp;stop was Palenque, site of an extensive group of Mayan ruins set in the jungle.&nbsp; These structures were very different from the Tikal ruins but equally impressive.&nbsp; We spent an afternoon in the beating&nbsp;sun climbing enormous staircases and exploring the jungle scenery.&nbsp; The town of Palenque itself isn't much to see, but it does have by far the best fresh fruit popsicles ("paletas" in Spanish) in the entire universe, hands down.&nbsp; Bronwen had one a day while we were here - coconut, watermelon, strawberry-&nbsp;and is still dreaming about them. We&nbsp;said goodbye to&nbsp;popsicle heaven and moved onto San Cristobal de las Casas.&nbsp; This is one of the loveliest towns we have visited on our trip.&nbsp; Chiapas is Zapatista country, and San Cristobal was the site of a brief&nbsp;occupation in the '90's.&nbsp;&nbsp;The city&nbsp;remains proud of its Zapatista history.&nbsp; We saw two fantastic documentaries&nbsp;that show here weekly&nbsp;- "The Last Zapatistas - Forgotten Heroes" about the surviving fighters of the original revolution in the early 1900's and "Zapatistas- Chronicle of a Rebellion" about the movement from the San Cristobal occupation in 1994 to present day.&nbsp; It set a nice context for our visit to this&nbsp;interesting city.&nbsp;&nbsp;In addition to&nbsp;the&nbsp;revolutionary spirit there are a myriad of lovely churches, a vibrant market place, great restaurants, and a gazillion vendors in traditional indigenous wear filling the squares.&nbsp;&nbsp;During our visit we took a tour to two nearby Mayan communities.&nbsp; San Juan Chamula is an entirely independent Mayan town, with its own religious and governmental leaders, who are legally recognized by the state.&nbsp;&nbsp; The town has retained its indigenous traditions and we were able to get a glimpse of&nbsp;the rituals and customs&nbsp;that make up their daily life.&nbsp; Perhaps the most impressive&nbsp;aspect was a visit to their unique church.&nbsp; The&nbsp;architecture is traditional Catholic, but the&nbsp;Chamulas ousted the Catholic priests in the 60's and have been free to operate under their own religious customs since then.&nbsp; This includes an open floor plan with no pews, candles lining the walls and floor in an array of&nbsp;colors and patterns (each with their own meaning), live chickens and soda pop used in religious ceremonies, and mirrors around the necks of all the saints.&nbsp; Photography is forbidden inside the church, but try to imagine a huge cathedral filled with music, pine incense, thousands and thousands of lit candles, and people grouped together standing or on the floor in prayer.&nbsp; It was a breathtaking, spiritual place. We moved on from Chamula to the town of Zinacantán, another Mayan pueblo with its own distinct style.&nbsp; While the Chamulas wear heavy black wool skirts (women) and wooly sweater tunics (men), the outfit for Zinacantán women is vibrant purple embroidered blouse with long cotton skirts.&nbsp; The major religion here is still Catholicism, which our guide Cesar (quite a funny guy) says means less tourism for this town because there are "no chickens in the church".&nbsp; We met a group of weavers who showed us their work and then made fresh tortillas for us on an open fire.&nbsp; Cesar&nbsp;further explained&nbsp;Mayan customs and religion&nbsp;and we discussed how the indigenous way of life is being threatened by missionaries who think these customs come from barbarism and ignorance.&nbsp; It was really an eye opening look into an ancient culture&nbsp;continuing to try&nbsp;to find a place in this modern world. We spent four days (that's long for us!) in San Cristobal, soaking in the sites, taking in a theatre production, shopping on the busy pedestrian walkways, and avidly people watching.&nbsp; Finally it was time to move on.&nbsp; Our next scheduled destination was Mazatlán, where Eli's parents live and&nbsp;would be eagerly (we hoped) awaiting us for a glorious month of staying in one place.&nbsp; Our options were&nbsp;35+ hours of buses to get there or a 3 hour flight.&nbsp; So after&nbsp;seven months on the road we boarded our first plane of the year and took off into the skies.

CENTRAL AMERICA, Guatemala

Final push northwardEighteen buses in one weekWhere are we again? With 4 weeks and 4 countries to go before reaching our final destination of sunny Mexico, we embarked on our hightailing adventure through Central America. Our tight schedule allowed us only to hit some highlights, and hit them we did. First on our list was the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, which we crossed into from Panama with our Swedish friend Emmanuel along for the ride. We&nbsp;started in Puerto Jimenez, a hub for travel into Corcovado National Park. Intrigued by a flyer we saw in an internet cafe, we decided to spend our time here at Bolita, a rustic little backpackers' retreat in the jungle alongside the park. It was a grueling uphill hike with our packs to the site, but totally worth it. We spent a wonderful day trekking through the jungle, spotting howler monkeys, irridescent lizards, and wild macaws in the trees and dipping into a natural swimming hole. We passed the evening in the open air cabin chatting with other adventurers and trying to avoid (unsuccessfully it turned out) the infamous, though harmless, Corcovado ticks.&nbsp; Our next Costa Rican stop was the capital of San Jose, where Eli spent his final year of college studying abroad. It was a trip down memory lane, as we visited his former house, the University campus, the court where he used to play hoops with the boys, the hole in the wall bakery where he used to buy cinnamon buns, etc. etc. We even managed to take in a pro basketball game while we were there. Bron enjoyed tales of the good old days and&nbsp;a new exploration of&nbsp;this funky city.&nbsp; It was time to move onto Nicaragua, a beautiful country filled with friendly, laid back people. We spent our first night in San Juan del Sur, a sandy little beach town geared towards vacationers. The next day we caught the ferry to Ometepe, an impressive volcanic island rising out of Lake Nicaragua. Despite a run-in with a scorpion in our sink, we enjoyed a relaxing two days of stunning views and Flor de Caña&nbsp;rum (Nicaragua's specialty). An added bonus was discovering that Ometepe is the sister island to Bainbridge Island in Seattle! Small world!! Next we hit Granada, a sweet colonial town on the edge of the lake. Beautiful architecture and a lively beachfront scene made this city a favorite.&nbsp; We explored the market, watched some neighborhood sports games in the park, and&nbsp;enjoyed the sun setting pink over the serene lake.All too quickly the time came to leave this lovely country and start the trek to Honduras.&nbsp;Five buses, two taxis, one bicycle rickshaw and a rough border crossing later we arrived in Tegucigalpa, where we were immediately warned by 3 neighborhood policemen not to walk around at night. We hightailed it out of there early the next morning and headed for the coast. By the afternoon we were in paradise: the Bay Island of Utila, known for tropical waters and amazing scuba diving. We spent 3 glorious days on Jewel Cay (a tiny island off of Utila), where the good folks of Captain Morgan's Dive Shop guided us through some amazing reef dives and an awesome night dive (jellyfish!).&nbsp; The whole of Jewel Cay is about a 5 minute walk end to end on the town's only footpath, which made for a relaxing small community atmosphere (but not a good place to go for a run, as Bron discovered on a hilarious back and forth, back and forth attempt).After our brief love affair with Honduras it was time to move along to Guatemala. Our main destination was Tikal, although it took us a few days to get there. We had a lovely stopover in Rio Dulce, a bustling little port town on a wide picturesque river. We lucked into an upbeat riverside Eco Lodge hostel where we spent a fun night chatting with the Australian owner and Belgian guests. After another round of buses we finally reached Flores, the main point of entry for Tikal visitors. Tikal itself was impressive and surprising - since Eli visited the site in the 90's they have unearthed several more enormous temples and the work is ongoing. We climbed the temples and marveled at the Mayan craftmanship. It was a beautiful end to our rapid crossing through Central America. Concepcion, Paraguay

River boat to farmBugs we never imaginedBron is staying strong This&nbsp;was quite a different week for us. Jam-packed city bus across the border into Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, then taxi to the bus terminal, cushy bus to Asunción (the capital), a sleepless although air conditioned night in a hotel, up at 5 am and down to the docks to catch the Cacique II riverboat. Really one of the main reasons we wanted to come to Paraguay, the Cacique II is a small passenger and cargo ship that, once a week, weaves up the Rio Paraguay from Asunción to Concepción and beyond. Information about the boat is sketchy at best (Paraguay doesn't have much internet presence in general), so we weren't even sure there would be a boat. However, when we rolled up to the port at 6:30 am on Wednesday there she was, the Cacique II in all her decrepit glory. Butterflies in our stomachs and groceries in hand for the 30 hour trip (mostly canned goods which would survive in the muggy 95 degree heat), we boarded the ship and settled in for the trip.The riverboat ride was really something. We paid the extra $6 to get a camarote (a little cabin with a bunk bed, the alternative to sleeping on deck in a hammock), but spent most of our time out on the upper&nbsp;deck letting the breeze carry away the (biting) flies and cool us in the heat. Its a very calm river, with wide green banks and silty water as smooth as glass. Everyone drank tereré all day long, which is the Paraguayan version of mate - same herb, vessel, and metal straw, but made with cold water poured from a much bigger thermos or pitcher. Every so often the captain maneuvered the boat to shore and people and goods (sacks of vegetables and grain, mysterious boxes and bags, even appliances) were carried on and off over a wooden plank between deck and shore. The sunset was spectacular and the night sky an explosion of stars over the water. We slept in our hot little camarote and spent the next morning enjoying the river, chatting with the friendly capitán (turns out he is Uruguayan!) and eagerly anticipating our arrival to Concepción.&nbsp; Exhausted but satisfied by our river experience, we spent one lazy night in Concepción - Thanksgiving actually, which we celebrated with a lot of beef - shocking, we know. The other reason we came to Paraguay was to visit an organic farm owned and operated by an extremely hilarious and kind German man and his family. Granja El Roble (granja is little farm, el roble is an oak tree) is a working farm, and Peter and his wife Andresa make it available as a sort of resort for backpackers as well as the large Mennonite population in Paraguay (mostly of European descent, many living in the Chaco region). Peter has built and stocked several lakes for fishing, runs river trips, does farm tours and entertains with his animated storytelling. Andresa is a genius in the kitchen and we've enjoyed 3 homecooked meals a day, both Paraguayan and German specialties like stews and fried duck, hard boiled eggs in mandioca, fresh pate and mangos for breakfast - everything grown or raised right here. Along with the abundant animals there are Peter and Andresa's three delightful, energetic children who are ever happy to show you around or hand you a toad or Nina, the family puppy.&nbsp;&nbsp;Really we can't say enough about how amazing our time at the granja&nbsp;was - we had an extremely tough time leaving, staying several days longer than planned. So relaxing, days filled with reading and fishing and drinking beer and stuffing ourselves. We spent one whole day floating down the Rio Ipane on innertubes with Tessa and Andy, a pair of upbeat travelers Peter had come across in Concepcion.&nbsp; Paraguay itself is lush and green, a world apart from anything we've seen, with a still developing infrastructure and very friendly people.&nbsp; Not knowing what to expect before we arrived, its been our&nbsp;most pleasant surprise yet.&nbsp;Next its back on the hostel trail! &nbsp; To view all photos in this entry please choose view all photos above or click on any photo to enlarge and move through the album!
