And on the ground too.

Wild Animals: Moose, elk, coyote, sandhill cranes...and did we mention BEAR?

On the iPod: Sentimental perhaps, but we've listened to our wedding CD!

Tourist Activites: Bellied up on the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar saddles,
Silver Dollar Bar, shopped around the town of Jackson , visited Connie's favorite museum the National Museum of Wildlife Art, visited the chapel where we were married (they've added a brides bathroom since we got hitched...plush!) , hiked around Leigh Lake and Christian Pond (nearly by ourselves).

Culinary Experiences: Trout and elk, which we found out is dangerous to eat if American. The elk served in restaurants in this country comes from elsewhere. Interesting. Also, for Connie's Bon Apetit ladies (Wendy, Jessica, Lisa - if you're out there), we went to Jenny Lake Lodge for dinner...but we did not sing the macarena.

Non-Tourist Activity: Watched a double wedding at the lodge today. Double. Was to be outside, but since it's snowing they had to move it indoors.

Hardship: Leaving.

So we have to admit, we rushed the final stage of our vacation of bit. Jackson Hole was the prize at the bottom of the Crackerjack box. We saved the best for last and we are so happy to be here. It's comfortable, like home. The weather is cold, really cold. Connie wore not one, but two hooded sweatshirts over a long-sleeved t-shirt on our hikes. We didn't really pack for winter. But the beauty of this area makes it all OK. As we look out our window the snow is coming down at a ridiculous pace. We can't begin to see the Tetons. Perhaps we won't get out tomorrow as planned...Oh well!

We also must admit that we're pretty tired. Fatigued. Our adrenalin has run out. Our intestines need re-booting. Our livers need some love. It is time to head home.

Bob and Connie
Oddly the first song that came on this morning was Alan Parsons Project's 'Days Are Numbers (The Traveller)' with the following lyrics (we hate to be sappy, but they got to us):
'The traveller is always leaving town
He never has the time to turn around
And if the road he's taken isn't leading anywhere
He seems to be completely unaware
The traveller awaits the morning tide
He doesn't know what's on the other side
But something deep inside of him
Keeps telling him to go
He hasn't found a reason to say no'

Culinary Experiences: We found ourselves in a dreary diner in dreary Tucumcari, AZ for breakfast. Looking for something...easy, Connie orders the Chicharrone Breakfast Burrito (egg, cheese, green chile). Seems OK, right? Well...the chicharrone part of the equation is fried pig skin. It was CRUNCHY...and not in a good way. Blech. The idea still turns her stomach.

Wild Animals: Elk, hares, sasquatch

You Know You're In The West When: You see a sign on the interstate that reads "watch for (sketch of elk) for the next 64 miles".

Magazines Read: 0
Books Read: 0
Audiobooks Played: 1/10th of one
Roadtrip Games Invented: 2...But we can't disclose the details in public.

Last Gas Price: $4.69/gallon...for the cheap stuff. This was right outside the Grand Canyon and when you're the only kid on the block you can charge whatever you want.

Whew!: The weather has drastically changed for us. We had to put jeans on for the first time since May 19th and were relieved (shocked, as we're sure you are) they still fit.

Thanks for coming along.
Bob and Connie (aka The Sharks...we're always moving forward)
Amarillo, Texas, United States

What a blast!!! Driving from Oklahoma City to Amarillo isn't one of those tasks you typically look forward to undertaking. But fully refreshed, thanks to a wonderfully comfortable night sleep and two home cooked meals, we had a fantastic, memorable day.

States Added: Texas...for a total of 23 plus DC

On the iPod:
Back to Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen

Culinary Experiences:
A steak from the Big Texan Ranch House, famous for it's 72 ounce steak. If you can eat one in 60 minutes you pay nothing. If you can't (and 90% of those who attempt it cannot) it'll cost you about $60.00.

Tourist Activities:
Visited the very moving Oklahoma City Memorial for the Murrah Building bombing in 1995.
Got on and off Route 66, along with visiting a Route 66 museum where we invested in some fuzzy dice for our rearview mirror (classic). Stopped by the Groom Texas cross, the 2nd largest cross in the Western hemisphere weighing 1250 tons...because everything has to be big in Texas.
Checked into the cheesiest motel of our journey, the Big Texan Hotel.

Connie Can Die Happy: Bob had his submarines so it was Connie's turn to experience bliss. Standing in line at the Big Texan Ranch House for dinner, which by anyone's review can only be compared to an arcade, we are informed that there is filming going on in the dining room. What is being filmed? we casually ask. "Andy from No Reservations" we are told. Connie perks up. She asks 'Anthony BOURDAIN of No Reservations?' Yes, that's right, she's told. WHAT????? Many people may know that Connie is a Travel Channel junkie. Anthony Bourdain is the David Cassidy of the Travel Channel (in her opinion). The world gets fuzzy, her ears start to ring, she is revisiting 1972. By golly, as they get seated, there in the middle of the dining room is the man himself lit like a Christmas tree with a halo...um....maybe that was just Connie's interpretation. We digress. To cut a long story short, Bob mortifies Connie by asking Tony (now that we're buddies) if he will have his picture taken with his (crazy) wife. He kindly agrees.
We come to Amarillo Texas on a 95 degree day, check into a roach motel, get in line for a tourist trap dinner and she meets The Man. What are the chances of this happening? What are the chances?????

Cultural Difference: The rest stop bathrooms also function as tornado shelters.

Question Of The Day: This is for our Texas friends (Ralph, Kathy, Scott)...What is the deal with the rest stops down here? These things are plush!!! They even come with BBQs shaped like the state itself. Makes us very suspicious.

We have been on the road now for four full weeks and we are counting down to the day we return home. Much to our surprise, we have caught our second wind and are still thoroughly enjoying the ride.

Bobs Your Uncle. B&C
Norman, Oklahoma, United States

As we crossed the border from Arkansas to Oklahoma the road seemed to widen with fewer crazy drivers, the sky seemed a bit bluer and the air a bit lighter....we've entered the West...and it feels good.

States Added: Tennessee, Arkansas and Oklahoma for a total of 22 (plus DC)

On the iPod:
Mississippi: Delta Blues, some dating back to the 1920s. Not our favorite music to listen to but it sure puts you in the mood.
Memphis: ELVIS!! Plus we listened to Paul Simon's Graceland and Marc Cohn's Walking In Memphis when the time was right.
Oklahoma: Mostly Garth Brooks, with a Flaming Lips song thrown in for good balance!

Culinary Experiences:
NOLA: Muffelatta (sounds like a sheep organ, but it is actually a local specialty sub sandwich with olive salad.
Mississippi: Turnip Greens (which, for the record, are better than collard greens) and fried catfish. The area is also known for hot tamales. The restaurant we went to offered them fried (of course) but they were great. The meal we had at a blues club in Clarksdale was easily one of the best of the trip.
Oklahoma: A true culinary treat when you're on road...a home-cooked meal!

Tourist Activities:
Mississippi: Vicksburg National Civil War Battlefield. Traveled the Blues Highway through the Mississippi Delta.
Stayed at the Shack Up Inn which really has to be experienced to be believed.

Tennessee: Graceland! We also went to the Peabody Hotel and saw the famous Peabody Ducks in the fountain. It would be just like ducks running free in the Davenport Hotel/Fountain. Connie got to walk down Beale Street.

Non-Tourist Activities:
Mississippi: Visiting a local animal shelter (see hardships below)
Oklahoma: Visiting with friends Bob and Sheila.
Their home has been an oasis for two smelly, dehydrated, weary vagabonds. PLUS, during dinner a bell went off and a strange voice came from the master bedroom. It was their severe storm warning system.
We sat on their front porch and watched a beautiful thunderstorm that luckily never turned into anything more...much to Bob's chagrin.

Wild Animals: Armadillo, but the only ones we've have been road kill.

Hardships:
1. Connie has been sick off and on since Charleston. Just as she started to feel human again, Bob got the mother of all headaches in Memphis. We both seem to be on the mend now.
2. Just as we were pulling away from the Shack Up Inn (on the Hopson Cotton Plantation) we saw a little Labrador-mix puppy running down the highway. What are you going to do????? We stopped the car and grabbed the pup and named him Hopson. We took him back to the Inn to get him some water (horribly dehydrated) and a box to put him in until we figured out what options we had, which we found to be very few. The guy at the inn said that it was common and that their county was too poor to have an animal shelter. WHAT??? He suggested we take him up to a wealthier county to see if there was a shelter that would take him. The pup had fleas and we were going to put him in our car for an hour? Grief. On our way North, we happened to get out our trusty iPhriends and found an animal shelter (sort of) right there in Clarksdale. We took him there and found a rather odd place being run by what appeared to be inmates from a local correctional facility. It was the best we could do. We did what we hoped would be best for our buddy Hopson. We hope he gets unbelievably lucky. And yes, we changed our clothes and vacuumed the interior of the car within two blocks of dropping him off.

We'll leave you with a billboard we saw selling wine as we drove through Oklahoma: "Just like California...but less fruity"

Happy Trails! Bob and Connie
Bob, Brian and Adriane had a lovely lunch and toured around the sites outside the French Quarter. Connie hung out in the hotel room, drinking PowerAde, sick in bed...in 93 degree heat. That fast food stop in Myrtle Beach continues to take a toll.

LAISSEZ LE BON TEMPS ROULER!!! Bob & Connie

PS. There are two reasons you will see more photos of Bob than Connie on this blog: 1. Bob doesn't know how to upload and weave the photos onto the blog. 2. Bob likes to take 'unplanned' photos of Connie ie. with food in her mouth, bending over to pick something up off the floor. Plus, Bob loves to have his photo taken, so he's a natural subject!
The great low-country fare restaurants we'd looked forward to visitng were all full for the Memorial Day weekend...or closed. Southerners don't really care for working on the weekends. Therefore we were forced to expand our buffalo wings expertise. Additionally, we would tell you that Bob got a frozen concoction named "call a cab" that included 190 proof alcohol...but his mom reads this blog!

Biggest Disappointment: The Boneventure Cemetary in Savannah is as dripping in spanish moss and humidity as you would hope...but they moved the statue 'Bird Girl' from the Midnight/Garden/Evil movie to a museum downtown.

Wild Animals: Pelicans. However Bob is devastated that there have been no gators on the interstate.

Late Discovery: Bob doesn't read road signs...completely ignores them. Completely. Apparently he feels they're mere suggestions. Connie laughed until she cried when she discovered this...the hard way...a couple of times. How does a person set off on a 9500+ mile road trip with no interest in road signs??? Oh yeah, he conveniently brings along an anal-retentive, map-reading freak.

Opportunity? From what we've seen so far, every piece of waterfront and secondary waterfront property on the Gulf Coast is for sale. Seriously...every single one.

We are writing to you with over 1/2 of our vacation days passed and over 1/2 of our miles driven. We have passed the farthest spot we will be from home and begin our return journey. But before you feel too sad for us, you should know that we are writing this from our river view condo in our bathing suits as fishing boats and pelicans lazily go by.
Charleston, South Carolina, United States

Culinary Experiences: Shrimp and Grits, Fried Green Tomatoes, Collard Greens, Hoppin John, Mac-n-Cheese, Cornbread, Fried Catfish, Butterscotch Pudding, Sweet Tea, Fried Chicken, Biscuits and gravy.....and more grits. Yee Haw!!!

Tourist Activity: Night tour of the 'haunted' jail. Eating Southern food.

Non-Tourist Activity: An unbelievable private tour of the H.L. Hunley (aka the Hemley!), the first successful battle submarine, from the civil war, that has recently been recovered from the ocean outside Charleston and is being preserved. Eating Southern food.

Wild Animals: Buzzards...and tree frogs that sound like well-used old beds creaking into the balmy night.

Cultural Difference: Where do we begin? For one thing, they call cock roaches 'palmetto bugs'...sounds so much prettier doesn't it?

Best Odor: The fragrant jasmine in the evening around every other corner.
Worst Odor: The fragrant smell of horse urine around the other ones.

After surviving the rain downpour, nickel-sized hail and rather frightening thunderstorms we continued our journey on the 'scenic' route through Myrtle Beach. If the miles of Las Vegas style putt putt golf weren't enough (think Division street in Spokane with huge fake volcanoes and dinosaurs thrown about) it was BIKERS WEEK!!! Hundreds and hundreds of urban kids on street bikes without helmets.

CHARLESTON was our final destination...and it proved worth the wait. We met up with our friends Brian and Adriane. Brian grew up outside Charleston so we were in good hands. After getting settled in our lovely carriage house in the heart of town, they took us to a restaurant that truly fulfilled Connie's desire to 'eat her way through the South'. Afterwards we took a walk 'round town before settling in. About 1 am Connie woke up sick...powerfully sick...'roll your eyes into the back of your head' sick. We're thinking she shouldn't have started eating her way through the South while we were still in Myrtle Beach!

The next morning Brian and Adriane surprised submarine-loving Bob with an extraordinary experience. Typically the H.L. Hunley submarine is only open to the public on the weekends because the real people, the archeologists and scientists, work on it M-F. Typically it is soaking in water when the public sees it. Typically...but not good enough for Bob Travis! They had the ship out of water because it was mid-week and they were trying to get the forward pump out - the smoking gun so to speak, as to the mystery of what might have befallen the submarine in 1862. We were four of only 12 people in the room...all the others being scientists, videographers, photographers and benefactors. The event made the newspaper the next day. Wow...I suspect we'll be the four dorks in hard hats in the background when they do a documentary about the event. We'll let you all know when it premiers. Unfortunately, they didn't allow the public (aka the four of us) to take any photographs so you'll have to take our word that all this occured until we're famous!

We also took a haunted tour of the old creep jail. Great, silly fun.

Charleston is a beautiful tasty treat of a city. Thanks for everything Adriane & Brian...see y'all in NOLA!
B&C
Alexandria, Virginia, United States

New Miles: None
Time Spent In Car: None
On the iPod: Nothing
Miles Put On Our Bodies....Argh!

Writing to you from bed...middle of the day.

Fatigue, aches, pains, stiff joints, feeling like we're REALLY old. This is our payback for the 'tourists on speed' mode we practiced yesterday.

The highlights:
-Arlington Cemetary (changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Kennedy graves)

-The National Archives (Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and the Constitution)

-National Air & Space Museum (apparently there is no limit as to how many tools of war a man can gaze upon)

-'Monuments by Moonlight' tour which included just about everything you might like to see in DC with stops at The FDR Memorial, The Iwo Jima Memorial, The Lincoln Memorial and The Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

DC at night is not to be missed.

We left the hotel at about 9 am and didn't get back until after 11 pm. THAT is a long day of sightseeing.

It started out rough...Connie lost her barely used, over-priced sunglasses first thing at Arlington Cemetary. (Gina, if you're out there, you might remember them from Vegas.) Then, though we packed THREE memory cards for our camera, we had NONE of them with us.

OH - we almost forgot...remember how we said Monticello was overrun with school groups? Well, ALL of DC is packed with school groups. What the heck? There was a large group of pre-teens standing in line to get on the 'monuments by moonlight' tour - right in front of us. THEN, the guy who does the DC Ducks tour was finished for the day so he gave every kid a duck whistle...a duck whistle...let the idea of that sink in for just a bit. We gave the gentleman in charge of our destiny, the one figuring out where the line would end/begin for each trolley, the look of sad puppies. We may have even gotten on our knees and begged. He took pity and put us on a 'whistle-free' trolley. Whew!

Today we are strolling around Old Town Alexandria and recovering from yesterday.

They say when you look like your passport its time to head home.......NAH!

B&C

PS...Yes, that is STILL the evidence of Connie's pizza incidence.
