Cabo de la Vela, Colombia

From being in Usuia, pretty much the southernmost point of South America, I have made it to Cabo de la Vela, pretty much the northernmost point of South America. The actual northernmost point is a few mile away but hard to get to without your own transportation. That is a distance of about 4600 miles from point to point. The ground I covered has gotta be two three times that, mabey more. So that is pretty crazy.Getting to Cabo de la Vela from Taganga was a bit of an adventure. From taganga to Riohacha was easy, and I was under the impression that there was direct transportation to Cabo from there. but it was rainy season so not many people where going there, and the coastal road was washed out. we had to take a shared car to a little town call Uribia and then almost got stuck there because all the regular jeeps had gone through for the day. We managed to get a private ride there for 40 bucks.Cabo de la Vela is a really cool place. All the power is provided by personal generator. We were pretty much the only people there at the time. We stayed in hammocks in a little cabana across the street to the beach. Aparently during the hight season the town is packed end to end with tents and all the hamock spots are rented. During the day we hiked to a couple diffent points and to a really nice beach on the northern side of the cape. The moskitoes were going pretty crazy at the time. Normally the area is scruffy desert but during the rainy season there are puddles and temporary lakes all over the place, perfect places for moskitoes to breed. We lucked out and had really nice weather the whole time we where there.

So after 11 Months and 11 days I got back home again, just in time for thanksgiving. It was a really great trip. My favorite countries definitely have to be Argentina and Colombia. My favorite stop by far was Cordoba Argentina. I definitely covered some ground. I estimate that I traveled around 14,000 miles overland, and another 15,000 in an airplane.

New York City, New York, United States

My last stop before going home was New York City. I have a lot of friends from college and a cousin who are living there at the moment. I stayed with a good friend of mine, in Brooklyn, and a bunch of people I know got together on the weekend to see a concert. So it was a lot of fun.It was pretty crazy being able to understand everybody perfectly again. I was also in a city that I knew reasonably well from being there before, so getting around was super easy. So all in all, it was really nice being back in the states, and hanging out with people I know, in places I know.

Oranjestad, Aruba

After Bonaire, I spent three days on Aruba. Because all the hotels there are really expensive, I just rented a car and camped on south end of the island. It worked out pretty well, even with some rain showers. I would set up my tent in the evening, and take it down in the morning, then drive into the nicer beaches. The beach I was camping on has a pretty continuous trade winds, which turns out to be a good thing. The wind keeps it cooler and the sand flies down. The last morning I was there they dropped for a bit and I got murdered by sand flies. Aruba was nice but three days of nothing but beach got kinda dull. I did get a sweet tan out of the deal though.

Kralendijk, Netherlands Antilles

It turns out that I had another friend from Utila living on Bonaire, that I only found out about once I got to Curacao. So I jumped over there and stayed on his couch for three days. Bonaire has only about 14,000 people on it, and is much drier. Diving is the main reason for coming to Bonaire, and I did five dives while I was there. The diving was really good and I saw a seahorse for the first time there. Bonaire also has a large sea salt operation on the south end, that has been in operation since colonial times.

Willemstad, Netherlands Antilles

I stayed for five nights on Curacao, sleeping on the floor of a friend of mine. We had gotten our Scuba Instructor certifications on Utila at about the same time, and he had been working there for the last three years.I island has a lot of people on it, around 150,000, so the southern end is pretty much one big city. The northwest point is much more wild and has some small hills. Apparently the island is usually very dry and brown, and there are a lot of cacti everywhere, but it was very green while I was there because of the rainy season. there were only a few beaches and they were kinda torn up from a previous hurricane but still, as you can see from the pictures, very nice.I did one dive, and some free diving while I was there. The reef is very nice around the island. The dive we did was on the wreck that was pretty cool aswell.

Manizales, Colombia

I came back to Manizales for a second time, to burn some days before I had to catch a flight in Bogota. This is where Brad and I split up, from here he will continue south along the way that I came up. I had a great night on halloween. The weather was off and on, so the only really touristy think we did was to go to chinchina to see a coffee farm. The coffee farm was really cool, becaue they take you through all the stages of coffee production.

Bogota, Colombia

I spent two more nights in Bogota, before I leaving South America. I went to the Gold Museum while I was there, and that was really cool. They have a ridiculous am mount of gold artifacts there. The even have enought to make a crazy artistic light displays room out of them.

Medellin, Colombia

We stayed in Medellin for about a week, and had a good time. I actually got into down town this time. We went to a museum and also up one of the gondolas, for a pretty cool view of the city. Another day we went out to lago guatape, which is a really pretty lake with a huge rock that has a look out at the top.
