Luang prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep

We're now in luang probing after a very interesting bus ride from the capital. The road was targeted a year ago by terrorists who shot at/blew up a bus load of tourists. Sarah neglected to tell me this until we were in laos as she is now organizing the holiday. The trip lasted 12 hours and we were sat 2 seats away from our guard and his ak47, who popped out at every rest stop to sweep the area. He seemed quite excited when the bus stopped at an unexpected road block at which point we passed out. Thankfully it was just an accident up ahead, and in our caring moods we pushed the wrecks out the way so we could get the hell out of there.

So far everything is great (westernized) the food is lovely (burgers) and we can now start planning the next step (how to cross the border avoiding the terrorists)
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep

unfortunately i let sarah work her magic once again.

we missed out malaysia (don't know why) and have come to laos. it takes at least 10 hours to get anywhere, we again have to worry about landmines and have so many mozzie bites malaria is a certainty.

Just thought I'd fill you in on our most interesting couple of days yet. Hopefully it wont take me long as there's an army of red ants around the computer. I've managed to halve their numbers but they're regrouping already.

On our last day in Vientiane (lao capital) we felt invincible and hired a motorbike. The guy didn't seem bothered by the fact that I had never ridden one with gears before, but wasn't going to let sarah leave with one after watching her weave her way down a very straight, paved street. So cue her clinging on to my bike which I now can't control at all with the extra weight. The first few steps went ok, then the road turned to dust and she decided to stick her foot in a pot hole. She managed to hop around the oh-so interesting temple we'd gone to the effort of visiting and then demanded hospital attention. After many minutes of imparting my expert knowledge and assuring her it was just a bruise and to get on and look at the lovely Buddha images and stop trying to get out of her daily temple sightseeing trip, we were off to find a proper doctor.

The docs were very good (yeah right) and knew exactly what they were doing. They pressed her foot, saw dollar signs and ordered an x-ray. Half a million kip, 2 wheelchairs and an ambulance ride later we were at the x-ray house. Dr lord refused to leave until the radiographer had taken the exact picture she wanted, and 4 films later we were back in the ambulance. By this time she was getting used to all the sympathy and didn't want to leave. Obviously the x-rays were normal and we were booted out once the money ran out. 3 days later things are improving and there's less hopping going on, so its onto the next...
