Franz Joseph, New Zealand

Here we are in Franz Joseph to climb the glacier and the rain is coming at us sideways and like nails because of the gusts of bitter wind. The glacier, named after an Austrian Emperor of yesteryear, looks fairly dirty at the bottom but as we precariously ascend higher, the ice whitens and even glistens blue in compact places. It is a lot of fun despite the rain (it rains on average 260 days of the year here)and we've thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and feel good for the excercise.
Akaroa, New Zealand

It was a terrificly scenic drive here in our mushroom coloured Nissan Sunny rental, as the roads winds its way up and over and down the Banks Peninsula, what was once mistakenly declared an island by Captain James Cook. We set up our tent and though the temperature by night is pretty parky we found ourselves to be surprisingly snug, like a couple of glowworms in our sleeping bags! These rolling hills have a gentle beauty about them and a hearty fry-up breakfast sets us in good shape to walk around the harbour, lighthouse and onwards.
Christchurch, New Zealand

It seems as if we've travelled halfway around the globe only to end up back in England, or at least an extremely passable impersonation of it in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. It's the better parts of England too that Christchurch resembles and we've had some splendid walks around the cathedral city, along the River Avon and through the botanical gardens. New Zealand looks quite promising from here.
Paris, France

Here in Paris, slightly jetlagged, we suddenly find oursevles back in a cold yet sunny climate. We're busy seeing the sights and have so far been to the Louvre (home to the world's most famous painted smile) and to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Ben's eaten snails in Montmartre whilst watching the artists paint and we've found time for a bit more shopping too. Having a whale of a time.
Auckland, New Zealand

Here we are at the end of our trip and we've had a lot of fun here in the land of kiwis but we're tired too and it's time to go home. Auckland's nice enough, we got a good view of the city by climbing up Mount Eden and enjoyed the tour of Lion's Brewery. We probably haven't explored it as much as we should have though as we have half a mind on our flight to Paris. Not long now, see you all soon.
Mount Ngauruhoe, New Zealand

Hoping for better weather than we got yesterday at Mount Egmont, we arrived at Mount Ngauruhoe (The Lord of the Rings' Mount Doom) to go on a tramp along part of the Tongariro Crossing. Unfortunately the rain and mist followed us here so we scratched our best laid plans and moved on. Two sights in a row now forfeited. Nothing more to be said really.
Mount Egmont, New Zealand

We went to see this volcano because from the photographs we've seen it's a pretty impressive sight. Looking not dissimilar to Japan's Mount Fuji, this volcano was actually used as a stand-in for The Last Samuri. Sadly this time around we'll not find out what it looks like: the region is well known for its rain fall of seven metres a year and when we visited we saw nothing but fog and drizzle.
