Santiago, Chile

I love this place!
We have been on a tour to Valparaiso, and to Vina Del Mar. They were amazing cities. They are right beside each other on the coast, and they are holiday towns for all the residents of mendoza and santiago, because they are so close, only 1.5 hours from santiago. We saw parks, cool statues, a lot of palm trees, an original moai, the beach, pablo neruda's old house in valparaiso, the neat streets, we went up in an elevator, ummmmm and had lunch on the water.
We also have done a couple of walking tours of Santiago. People are so freindly and helpful. The city is very nice, and very easily laid out. You don't even need a map. There is a little hill in the middle of the old part of the city. It is called Cerro Santa Lucia, and you walk up to the top on staircases that are elegance personified. The day we chose to do this was 35 degrees. A little warm (heard about another storm in vancouver..hahaha). We also had starbucks!!! yay starbucks!!! I think that santigo is more metropolitain then buenos aires, and that there aren't as many things for a tourist to do here, but the people alone make it a worthwhile stop! We also went to a couple more artesan markets, the stuff is amazing, and compared to our prices it is cheap!
I also got some bad news from home recently, a family member has passed away. Very sad, but I am surviving, the pool and the sunshine and the smiley people help a lot. Speaking of which, the pool is calling....
Santiago, Chile

So everyone had said that Santiago was a terrible place, full of smog, rude people, nothing to see, nothing to do.... first impressions.... on the bus and in the car, it's very pretty, surrounded by mountains (which you can't see too well because of the smog), and very nice people...but back a coupla days.....
New Years eve.... We went to the grocery store, bought some more vodka, and some diet sprite, and got ready to spend new years eve doing whatever. There was an electronic music party in the mountains, but it didn't start until 2, and we figured we would pretty much be ready for bed by 2.... There was also a dinner, but we didn't go for the dinner because of the disappointment last time. There were 2 new girls put in our room, one from australia, and one from england. They had just come from mendoza, somewhere where we had to go through. They were tanned, and we were ready for the heat and the sun.
So new years eve we drank the vodka, and played cards with the girls, and another guy from london. We were pretty buzzed by the time dinner rolled around at 11, but that was ok, since we had already eaten. Dinner this time looked amazing and I was kind of disappointed that I didn't go for it, but hey, you never know. The flamenco guitarist guy was back for entertainment, but since we had seen him, we wanted to continue playing cards, but they turned the lights out, and shhh'd us! Oh well. They also made an announcement that the mountain electronic festival was cancelled, so the party was now at the hostel. They moved some tables, turned on some lights, and people danced terribly to techno! I was getting pretty tired, and the smoke was bothering me, so at about 1:30 i headed upstairs to chill out in the non smoke filled room. Brit came up a lil later, asked for some cah, and then left. She didn't come back til 5!! She went with some guys from england to the wilkenny, a typical backpackers irish bar. Next day we just kind of chilled. Watched some movies, made some brekky, etc.
Next day we left. The bus ride up to mendoza was nice, because we left at 4:30 and tried to sleep until we arrived at 9 the next morning. We then hung out in mendoza at a coffee shop til 12 when the bus to santiago left. The bus was shit. The company was tas choapa! do not take them! my seat was broken and constantly fell back, and brits seat was stuck completely upright. One lady went to the bathroom and stunk up the whole bus. Some guys beside us kept spraying cologne, and we put perfume on, and hand lotion to try and keep from gagging. Finally the bus driver came and cleaned the bathroom and added some air freshner, which was much appreciated. We were taking our oil and vinegar for salads with us and they started to leak! so we had to have them at our feet. Then we got to the border to enter chile! what a procession. It took 3 hours! We figured that since santiago was only about 110 kms form the border we would get there quick. wow were we wrong. the ride into santiago was amazing. we came through the andes, at one point there was a zig zag down the mountain where there were 30 curves, brit was not interested in looking at the drops! it was beautiful though. We finally arrived at the bus station at 8:20, when we were supposed to be there at 7:30! oh well, not much we could do. Cristian was waiting there to pick us up. We drove through santiago up into a mountainous area where their house is. The house is amazing. we were completely surprised. they have a maid, and a pool! we had our own room and bathroom, such a chnage after the hostels! Dinner was ready and everyone was waiting for us when we got to the hosue as well.
Today all we have been doing is sitting int he sun by the pool trying to get rid of the casperishness.
Bariloche, Argentina

Yay, we finally made it. The ride up here was long, but not extremely long. Well it didn't seem like it was too long. We arrived back from El chalten to El Calafate, same ride, diff time of day, tried to nod off again, not as easy this time. Had a shower after stopping at the grocery store, then played some card games, drank some beer and headed to bed after finally checking my emails. And woke up at the unGodly time of 4 am! ouch! Got packed and headed down to the bus station. Boarded the bus, random seating on our way back to the lil hole of Rio Gallegos... We changed buses there and we were in the very front seats, so we had a crazy view of the nothingness that would be our view for the next 10 odd hours until we hit Comodoro Rivadavia. We travelled along the water for about an hour before C. Rivadavia, which was gorgeous, it was windy, and there were huge waves, but when they crested the wind blew the water (small spray) in the opposite direction as the wave. It was so neat. There were also caves on the coast, and rocks that were soooo black.
We switched buses in C. Rivadavia and still had the front seats (booked early) this time it was cama; we were in semi cama the rest of the time. Semi cama the seats go back in three positions, but cama they go back 160 degrees, and they are leather, there are only 3 seats across the bus, whereas semi cama there are 4. We also got food included, and wine, and fleece blankets and pillows. The only drawback to the front seats with the company we went with was that we couldn't see the tv, but that was ok, no good movies anyway. Went to sleep after an awesome dinner, and got some sleep, maybe because no one had to brush by us, or because the bus kills sound travel in it, or because i was warm and cozy and could stretch out, or because I was completely tired, or all of the above. Woke up to "when a man loves a woman" at 7:30, was a nice wake up as far as bus wakeups go. Then we were served brekky n coffee, and the scenery had changed, we were now in a mountainous area with snow on the top, coniferous trees, and foxgloves like mad lining the road. We went through a town called el bolson which is supposed to be where all the hippies have hidden out since the 60's, we might rent a car and drive back there to check out their handicrafts market, but we might not.... So continuing the drive into San Carlos de Bariloche we felt very much at home, rivers, lakes, mountains with snow, fields with flowers and cows, horses..... very nice. We saw some really pretty rainbows too, and I probably took about 50 pictures of the bus ride. I will try and get some pictures up in a little bit, but last time I did I got a virus on my memory card and had to have someone fix it for me, formatted it and started again. I think these computers here might be ok tho.
>After we arrived we walked to the hostel with our bags and leftover bus trip food (first bus didn't serve food). It was crazy windy, but really nice after the bus trip and stale air. Got to the hostel to find out we couldn't use our newly purchased hostel international cards, they would save us 5 pesos a night which is over a dollar, so we really wanted to use them, we still might. Got shown to our room, and promptly napped. Got up, Brit slept, checked my email, which is nice, a luxury after Chalten....We made dinner, mmmm hot dogs for me, and mashed potatoes with this awesome cheese sauce thingie we have found here, and a salad, with my fave... cukes... they don't do salad dressing down here so we cart around oil and vinegar everywhere we go, we have a travelling grocery bag, hot choc, tea, two tupperware containers usually with leftovers, oil, vinegar, cup soups, bread, crackers, veggies, apples, bananas, essentially easy on the go food. After dinner we couldn't decide what to do, and didn't wanna be up too late, so we hung out in the main area getting a lil tipsy on orange vodka and sprite and playing yahtzee, which rocked, because it cost a total of 15 pesos! yeah 5 bucks! Then read a bit and slept all night, no snorer, no one leaving at a crazy hour, no nothing that was super bad.... just sleep, nice cozy warm, sleep. And we have a bathroom in our room which makes things easier, no waiting while the other 30 people in the hostel use it....
El chalten, Argentina

This entry is going to have everything from the day we arrived to the day we left, just so ya know :P
Day 1 Dec 14. We left El calafate at 7:30 in the morning, walking down to the bus station, no easy task in crazy crazy winds, with sand and dirt blowing all over you, but we made it. We nodded off for most of the trip there, nothing we hadn't seen before, some guanacos, birds, and sheep, other then that it was barren. We arrived ( the bus dropped us off at the bus stop, conveniently located right across the street from the hostel), and got our room, dropped our bags and walked down to the supermarket to get some supplies. On the way there I realized that (according to the guidebook) they don't have any atms, and they don't accept visa. So check out how much cash we have, enough to get us by with no extra spending, which is great because we need to cut down anyway. Went back to the hostel, changed into some trekking gear and headed up the mountain, literally. I was huffing and puffing up the "easy" trail (the one at torres del paine was considered "medium", I'm not sure what scale they are going by), literally climbing up the side of the mountain, but the scenery was awesome! Got back made some soup (wow, weird soup, we bought a mix of creamy pumpkin and some carrots, and potatoes, and onion -yuck-, and made that, but it was too watery so we dumped a pack of mashed potatoes in it, perfect, and it was really good, we had it for lunch and dinner the next day too!) and then watched a movie (the world according to garp) pretty good, and went to bed.
Day2 dec 15. Nothing exciting, tried to sleep in, but my sleep was seriously bothered by the people in our room who had to catch a bus in the morning. I didn't feel too well again either, I think the lack of sleep is beginning to kill me! I just putzed around for most of the day, tried to get some extra naps in, but not really possible. end of the day, watched ghost.
Day3,dec 16. We were prepared to go for an amazing hike today! Got up normal time, went to the grocery store, got some supplies, and then got changed again to hike. We mapped out our course a circle hike, going up the same mountain, hiking around behind it to get some views of Fitz Roy (mtn) and Cerro Torre (mtn.). We did and it was great. It snowed, rained, sunned, and was basically just some of the most amazing scenery I have seen in a long time! well not too long cuz a lot is amazing here! About 3/4 of the way through the hike my foot started hurting, so I had to limp the last 1/4, which added some time, and made me not enjoy it so much, but c'est la vie. The hike in total took about 7 hours. Went back, and read a bit, and then headed for bed.
Day4, and 5, nothing special at all, I basically sat around the hostel while it rained and was super windy, limping around on my hurt foot. Then we caught the bus on the 6th day back to el calafate.
Bariloche, Argentina

you know where the local drunks hang out :P IE: on 12 de octubre, on the way to the bus station out of town, across the street form the YPF gas station with the guanaco statues :P harmless....
Yesterday we rented a car. It was from a company called A open rent a car. Good little place. It was a fiat... standard, which was nice. At first is was kinda weird to be driving here, everyone just pushes, so if a road is built with two lanes, there is always room for 3 cars... We drove down to El Bolson, a gorgeous drive, rockin out to the mp3 players. The mountains are so nice, and it was nice to be able to stop and take a picture if you wanted....We wanted to go to El Bolson to check out the artisan market, which they have on tuesdays, thursdays and saturdays. We got there, and walked through the market pretty quickly, but I was a bit disappointed because it was smaller and as expensive as the ones in buenos aires :( It was nice tho, and if we had room there would be so much space taken up by the crafts and clothes, and jams...
Today we wanted to take the teleferico up to cerro otto. We walked into town again, and they said it was closed due to wind, so we walked around a bit, and found another market, but again, didn't buy anything... Then we went to a buffet, run by some chinese people, so yay chinese food, I even had a sushi roll!!!! After lunch, we waddled back to the place where the bus leaves for the teleferico (cable car) and it was running do we caught the bus and went up. It only takes 12 mins to get to the top, and if you are hardcore you can hike up or down or bike up. There is a revolving restaurant on the top. We walked around took the obligatory pictures, had a cup pf tea in the restaurant, took the car back down and then caught the bus back. Nothin too special. Tonight at the hostel there is karaoke..... more people butchering songs...
Bariloche, Argentina

So the facials were amazing! Take heed: do not go out in the sun after or you end up looking like rudolph! (thnx steph!). After the facials we had showers and got dressed, even put on some makeup (with eyeshadow...I felt almost normal). Then we headed downstairs, hung out with "crash" the hostel dog and had a couple of beers (have no idea if that is his name or not, but he kept just crashing everywhere). Then the time for dinner came (10 pm!). Brit headed upstairs and I sat down. My seat was beside a guy from wales and his spanish girlfriend from barcelona, and the other side had a couple from sweeden, and across were a couple of brits, so it was good, english all around! We got the first course, and dug in. It was good food. I expected them to bring out more food, and they did but they put it on side table, and didn't mention it for about 30 mins or so. I went n got some food from there (stuffed tomatoe, some potatoe salad, and some roast beef (cold) in some sort of sauce). There was supposed to be more food, and I expected some warm food, but i guess I was completely wrong. Anyway I wasn't the only one! I went up n got Brit, and then the party started. I have never heard anyone butcher english music like they did with their karaoke of english songs sung by native spanish speakers! "weeeeeeelcome to theeeeeeee oh-tel caleeeeeeeeefornyyyyyyyyA!" ouch! We hung out there for a bit, toasted with everyone (apparently Christmas eve is their big night, they eat late, toast at midnight and then open their gifts) and when we couldn't take the music anymore, we went up to bed (we've had the room to ourselves pretty much the whole time we've been there which is awesome, cuz it even has a private bathroom!).
Christmas day we slept in and then woke up and made a Christmas brekky fit for 2 B's! After brekky we got changed and headed to a store to buy some beer and took our mp3 players and some beer down to the beach! I had some Christmas music and Brit had some chill out music, so with the splitter we sipped our beer while grooving to mariah carey, content! We then headed back to the hostel, made a super dinner/lunch of pasta with veggies and cheese and tomatoe sauce and ground beef for me. Then came down to the internet place, and I had a super awesome video conference with my family! even gramma :) Then we went back to the hostel, I had a wee nap...
After the nap we decided to go out for some tapas and drinks to celebrate Christmas, so we walked into town (2 kms). We found a bunch of places, but none had some good tapas, so we went back to the pub we had been at to see the flamenco players before, cuz we knew the nachos were superb! They also had cosmopolitians on special, and to my delight they were playing hip hop :):):) "lean wit it, rock wit it!" then we walked back up to the main street for some ice cream! If you have never had argentine ice cream, you have no idea what you are missing! The tiramisu flavour had real tiramisu in it, and the coconut.......WOW! Good thing we have restraint!
Next day we went to the bus station to buy our tix outta here. We leave for Santiago on Jan 2, 2007! It was pouring outside so we went back to the room and just hung ut. Neither of us were feeling very well, my allergies were making me sneeze non stop, and i had a crazy headache! Brit wasn't feeling too hot either. We had some free drink tickets to go to a place called wilkenny (big irish pub, apparently very popular), so we decided we should go, but you don't go out til like 12..... so we napped, surprise surprise.... I had a shower, went downstairs checked my email and when I came up britney (party poooper!) decided we should sleep instead! oh well.
Today we walked into town again. All the shops were open when we first got there, but then closed for a siesta! There are so many things I wanna buy!!!!! everything! We will prolly end up getting some teeshirts because they are super cute, and maybe some magnets cuz tehy are small and easy to carry. I wanna buy everyone mate cups, but they take up space, and i don't have much :( We bought some chocolate at mamuschka, which is supposed to be the best chocolate in town, and I have to admit it was pretty good. I got my memory card burnt to a cd again so i could upload pics (seems I take a lot!). It only let me upload 5 tho..... sorry :( Now just updating this and i talked to steph, woohoooo, she got a webcam so we can have convos on here :) Now back to the hostel, maybe I can convince Ms. Party pooper to go out tonight!
El Calafate, Argentina

Ok so we've been in this dusty town since the 13th of December, which is technically one day, but we arrived at 1:30 in the monring, so not really, it's kind of two days.
So first impressions of this place. wind wind wind a little more wind and dust and stray dogs thrown in for fun. Yesterday we had nothing to do because we were tired we decided to see the glaciar today, so all we did was wake up kinda late and have breakfast (nice spread here, caorn flakes, dry toasted bread, dulce de leche, jam, butter, orange juice, coffee, oranges) and then ask what to do. The girl who works here was great. She gave us some options, one of which was to go to the laguna, and check out some flamingos! Did it for me, so did the cheap price tag, 2 pesos, less then a dollar!
Went to the laguna, paid the pesos, and walked around. They give you a guide on photocopied paper, and you go around to certain numbers and it tells you what it is at that number. We were befriended by a dog at 3, she was so cute, we still had to name her jorge tho, jorge dos! she reminded me of josie, and was terrozing all the birds in the park! At 7 we picked up another stray (well she had a collar), named her jesus (hey-zeus). She followed us around diligently, and didn't really bother any of the birds. We saw ducks, some thing hawk-like called a cara-cara, and some baby ducklings, and the whole time we were pushed around in the wind. Went back to the hostel, and made some din dins, forgt what tho.
Next day, glaciar day! I had been waiting for forever to see this glaciar. Glaciar perito Moreno. I had seen pictures and was excited to see it myself. We decided not to go in the monring because that was when there were more tourists. We boarded the bus at 3 in the afternoon and headed up to the glaciar (1.5 hours). Got to the glaciar, saw some views of it in the bus, I was amazed. It was as blue as the pictures and as gorgeous. Just amazing! We dropped off some people at the boat (which we decided not to do, another 50 pesos, and the US chicks from puerto madryn said it wasn't worth it), and then continued on. We got dropped off at about 5, and were told we had 3 hours, until 8, to explore the area, which includes 3 tiers of balconies, with stairs connecting them. We were also told that the kiosco (coffee shop-ish thing) and the washrooms ( ya know, the loo!) closed at 6.... so why were we there til 8 you ask... beats me..... if you ever go, get 4 people and rent a taxi, we only spent one hour exploring the balconies, photographing the glaciar, and waiting for icebergs to fall off! After that we froze our bums off waiting for the bus to come back, with no bathrooms! So to top it off, it started to sleet/snow! Oy, bus showed up and we left early, cuz everyone was ont he bus (no joke!). We started down the mountain, and were stopped about 30 mins into the journey by a construction crew! We had to wait for some trucks coming up and they would be about 30 mins! grrrrr, turned the bus off and we waited. While we waited me played hangman with the dudes in the seat across on the windows which had all fogged up! I got all the words, dayum I rock, with one letter, I think the guy was slow so he picked easy words! Anyway.... finally got back, and went to sleep for the journey to el chalten to do some hiking!! And to see the famous Fitz Roy mountain, and Cerro torre!

Bariloche, Argentina

So since we have been here we haven't done that much at all, we haven't even really wandered out of the hostel all that much...walks to the grocery count right???
We met a coupla guys form Calgary, and hung out with them a bit, played some cards, and the national canadian passtime, drinking. They had been to an irish pub the night before we met them and they said that the next night there was live flamenco music at about 11, so we decided to head over. We took a cab because it was raining like crazy, and we got there early, and decided to walk around a bit, most of the stores were closed, but we could look through the windows, much fun.
Bariloche is like the chocolate capital of something, so we had to try some chocolate. We went into one store and she gave us a small square to taste, it was really good, and then we saw some white coconut chocolate....heaven. We decided to buy a piece because it was only one peso... asked her to cut it, but she didn't, she just threw in another piece for free! good times.
Went back to the pub, and got drinks, I had a pina colada, but it wasn't very good, had a lot of dry cocnut flakes on the top... The guys made it in after their dinner and we sat down to talk and watch the show. The band was amazing. It usually consists of 2 guitarists and a percussionist, but they had a friend of theirs playing bass with them, and an older gentleman played some amazing drums... Their fingers were moving so fast that it was a blur. We stayed there til about 2:30 when the music ended. I was bagged, no sleep night after night and then some alcohol, I was dead girl walking! Got back to the hostel, some people were still up, and they were playing loud music, hopped on the puter, talked to some people.
Next day didn't do much of anything. I am not sure what happened but my tummy was a lil upset, and I had a lil bit of a headache :P We just kinda bummed around. At night there was a live music show at the hostel. It was supposed to start at 10:30 but didn't end up starting til about 11:45 by which time I was ready for bed. I watched them play for a bit, and then went to bed.
Tonight is Christmas eve and there is a big dinner here at the hostel. We also have our christmas present to each other today...facials :) quite excited for that :) So have a great Christmas eve, wish I were at home enjoying mom's amazing cooking and the closeness of family and friends on Christmas eve....
