July was hectic. I finished my videography course and launched right into the internship. Being July, it was peak season on Koh Tao and this was reflected by my filming schedule. I would be on for 5 days straight and then have 1-2 days off to recover and then launch right back into another 5-day work week.A videographer's day runs like this: Between 6 AM and 7 AM (depending on the dive shop) the videographer is expected to show up and get some 'scenery' shots of the dive shop and surrouning area. Then once the Dive students show up the day really begins. When the boat returns from its two morning dives, the videographer runs the office and begins capturing the footage onto the computer. This takes about 25-40 minutes...depending on how much was filmed that day. During this time the videographer may then run home for a quick shower and/or eat some lunch. Once the capturing process is finished (and some minor editing has been done) the files get uploaded onto the Adobe Premiere Pro software. The clips must then be arranged in the way you wish them to be presented. Once the movie is finished it must be burned onto the DVD and then checked, to make sure that everything is playing smoothly. The videographer then drives off to a local bar/pub (these again vary depending on the dive shop and its location) and plays the movie for the crowd. Once the movie is done playing... the videographer must then present the sales pitch and sell as many DVDs as possible. This would sometimes run as late as 7-7:30 PM (so...a 12 hour work day). As an intern...if I didn't sell, I didn't make any money. I knew that gaining experience at this point was almost as important (if not more important than) making money. It would still be disappointing though on no-sale days. I am proud to say I didn't have many no-sale days during my time on Koh Tao. In 4.5 months I think I maybe didn't sell anything on perhaps 6 or 7 days. Most of those days coming in September...when the weather was crappy and visibility was equally unpleasant.On most days...I would be so exhausted and drained by the time I finished showing my movie that all I would want to do was go home and sleep. Most times I would have to work the next day as well and preferred to be well-rested and bright-eyed on the job.In July there was also a Gloria English School reunion of sorts. Steve came down to to do his Rescue Diver and Dive Master. Dawn, Megan and Keith also came down to Koh Tao for some diving. Dawn stayed with me in my little bungalow in the woods for the two weeks she was on Koh Tao. It was nice getting to see all those people again. I felt bad though as I was working during most of the days they were there and then wasn't much lively at night because I was so tired all the time. Dawn and I enjoyed some great Thai food and beers by the ocean during those two weeks and life was good. With the Rescue Diver certification firmly under my weight belt...I was now ready to begin phase II of my Koh Tao experience.I met up with Adrian (Aidy) with the Underwater Video Productions and Training company known as Oceans Below (http://www.oceansbelow.net/). They are based out of Sairee Plaza...which is not very far from Sairee beach. Aidy usually has a partner in crime: Elisabeth...but she was off on vacation at the time I began my training.I signed up and took care of the necessary administrative bits, received my training booklet and then went home to do some reading before beginning the course the next day. At 10 AM I showed up and Aidy showed me how to prepare the camera, then the housing and then how to put the two together. He then showed me on dry land different kinds of shots and then sent me out and about to practice them. Some 2 hours later I returned and he then showed me how to get my footage onto the computer (Scenalyzer) and how to cut and edit it before getting it into the editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro). We went over my shots (I was congratulated on how steady my still and pan shots were) and then made plans for the next day...when I would have my first session in the water with the camera.The next few weeks alternated between dry days (editing) and diving days. The course itself is 2 weeks long and so I spent June 1st to June 15th learning the innermost workings of underwater videography. On June 26th I was given my final exam assignment. I would have to go out on my own and do a full customer video from start to finish (film, edit, show and sell). If I sold at least one video, I would pass. If I didn't...well...I think I would've gotten another chance..but I didn't want to think about that.I had had a few trial runs before and so I knew the how things were generally supposed to go and what shots I needed to cover for my video. That didn't stop me from being nervous as hell the day finally came. A million things were running through my head and I was just trying to stay calm.I went out with New Way Diving. They always leave ridiculously early for their morning dives (6 AM). It's a bit of a sacrifice to get up while it's still pitch dark out there. The good thing about leaving that early is that you also get to be one of the first boats at the dive site and return nice and early (around 10:30 and 11:00 AM). I was filming Graham, who I had been told was a super nice guy. We all met in front of the dive shop at 6 AM. I did the 'morning shot' (which is a quick intro to all the divers and instructor/assistant(s) and then we boarded the taxi to the pier. I made sure I was the first one off the taxi so that I could film everyone jumping off it and then ran ahead of them so I could film them getting onto the boat. As a videographer...sometimes you feel like a hummingbird...or perhaps a chipmunk on crack. There is quite a bit of running around...always trying to stay one step ahead of the group and to cover all the basic shots. On the boat I then had to get some 'scenery' shots, film the students setting up their equipment and then film the briefing (where the instructor tells the students about the dive sit, what they can expect to see and any skills they may be expected to perform during the dive). After the briefing I was running around trying to get my own SCUBA gear set up and had to leave it half finished so that I could run off and film the students putting on their gear. Running back to my own gear so I could finish setting up. That morning we went to Chumporn Pinnacle...one of Koh Tao's most amazing dive sites. There you can see many Batfish, Barracuda, Queenfish, Jacks, Trevally and the occasional Whaleshark. It has a maximum depth of 40 m and last year there were even Bull sharks about. The boat ride from Koh Tao to the dive site is some 40 minutes...so I had a bit of time to gather my bearings before we actually arrived at the dive site. Once we arrived at the dive site I quickly geared up and filmed everyone doing their buddy checks. I had my camera ready and was about to jump in when Graham pointed out that I didn't have my weight belt on. Flustered I ran off to get it and then struggled a bit to get it on under all my gear. I told him that I am just really nervous and not really this forgetful normally. He just smiled. The group jumped into the water and I jumped in after them. The dive was quite uneventful. I covered the basic shots. The visibility was quite lovely that day and it was a beautiful sunny day. This made for some great shots underwater. Our second dive would be at White Rock. I changed my old tank for a new one and then made sure I was ready to get in the water before the students were so I could film them jumping into the water. I jumped in (WITH weight belt this time) and filmed the students as they did their 'James Bond' entries (forward roll entry) and then sat around in the water a bit while Graham did the CESA (Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent) with the group. It was during this time that I heard our boat captain shout 'Whaleshark! Whaleshark'! I couldn't believe my ears! I said 'Where'? and he pointed me in the right direction. I swam off like a torpedo in search of the Whaleshark. I found it some 20 seconds later and then began to film it. I think I spent some 20 minutes with it. Thankfully, after Graham finished the CESA with his students he joined the big group of people swimming around the big fish and we were able to find each other. The rest of the dive just wasn't as exciting and I was still giddy beyond belief. I couldn't believe I had just filmed my first Whaleshark AND that I filmed it on my first official 'job'. I felt blessed. Back at Oceans Below I began getting my clips on the computer. While that was happening I ran home for a quick shower and even had some lunch. Then I sat down and began the editing process. I managed to get the movie fully edited and burned on the DVD just before my showing time. I was nervous. I hoped that people would like the movie and also hoped that I would at least get to sell one copy of it. I prayed that by having the Whaleshark on my side that it would make things easier. It did. After the movie was over I had requests for TWO DVDs. I was ecstatic. I had just passed my final exam AND made some cash (I got 500 baht per video). I was officially an Underwater Videographer. :)

The first step of the course was the EFR (Emergency First Responder). The videos for this course were so ridiculous. We see a man who has fallen off a ladder and a women walking down the street approaches him to see if he is alright. 'Hello! My name is YOUR NAME. May I help you'? The man gives no response. The woman reaches into her purse and pulls out a cell phone. She calls for help. She reaches into her purse and pulls out some rubber gloves. Dude, I know I can't speak for women as a whole...but I doubt many women walk around with rubber gloves in their purses. If they do...they're either fetish freaks or house-call proctologists. Anyway, after many laughs were had...we finally all finished the course (there were 9 students in total...quite a large class). There were two instructors and one assistant instructor for our class. The next day we would begin the Rescue Dive component and go out on the boat in the afternoon. The next day our large group, which was now up to 21 people (with all the Dive Master trainees - DMTs - we needed to assist us) took over the Buddha Big Boat. We learned to always be on our toes and have our fins and equipment ready (as well as flotation devices ready) because our DMTs had this uncanny ability to fall overboard and need rescuing. We had to go through 'dive from hell' scenarios...during which your 'buddy' would keep you on our toes and have anything and everything possible go wrong. You had to be there and help them. Then we had to learn how to carry an unconscious diver up the ladder back onto the boat. They paired me up with this guy who was 20 kilos heavier than me. The first time I managed to get him up the ladder...the second time my hand slipped on the hand rails and we both fell backwards into the water. The next day we were all back at it again and did our final scenario rescue. We had to do the whole thing from the beginning..which was...have someone report a missing diver. Get information about the diver's last known location, air, bottom composition (etc..) and then assign people specific jobs (set up O2, call EMS, be spotters on the surface and gear up to go search with you). Then we had to apply a search pattern we had learned, find the diver, surface the diver and then perform rescue breaths while towing the diver back to the boat WHILE removing your equipment and theirs. Then the final part was hauling them up the ladder and back onto the boat. They were nice to me that day and gave me someone who was closer to my own weight to carry up the ladder. After all was said and done. I can honestly say I was exhausted! The Rescue Diver course is seriously the most physically demanding course of all the PADI levels. I had wanted to go out and party that night but was so exhausted that I just ended up going back to my room and passing out in a coma once more.

I arrived ridiculously early: 6 AM at the Bangkok international airport. I was tired and just really wanted to get settled somewhere on Khao San Road and sleep for a few hours. I managed to find an airport bus that charged 150 baht for the trip to Khao San Rd. and just relaxed in the comfortable air conditioned bus with super comfy seats. After being in hot, humid and sweltering India where air conditioning was a perk that wasn't included into my budget...I made sure to make the best of the situation.Some 40 minutes later the bus reached its final destination and I set off in search of a cheap place to stay. I would be leaving that same night already for Koh Tao...so I had hopes of finding a place that wouldn't charge me full price for some accommodation. I managed to find this place called Joe's and I paid 250 baht and would be able to keep the room until 5:30 PM. I quickly went up to my room, showered and lapsed into a coma until 11:30 AM.After waking up I went in search of MEAT. Having spent the better part of 6 weeks living as a vegetarian...I was anxious to sink my teeth into some 'safe' meat once more. I chose Burger King as the place I would have my first meat experience in some almost 6 weeks. Let me tell you...a Whopper never tasted so damn good.I spent some time shopping around for a place to have my hair braided and purchased some fake Havaianas (Brazilian flip flops). I miss the real ones...they were so accessible everywhere in Brazil and incredibly cheap compared to international outlets. I managed to find a place to have my hair done...picked out a color for my extensions and then sat down for some 4-5 hours while it was being done. Good thing I still had my Shantaram book to keep me occupied.It was a bit strange having long hair again. There was this unfamiliar weight and texture of the braided extensions as well. I checked all over and felt relieved that they hadn't bee done too tightly, I had braids done once before back in high school. They were done much too tightly though and I had severe headaches by the next day and couldn't sleep. I ended up just taking them all out. I had hopes for the new set to last a bit longer. I rushed back to the hotel and quickly showered (yay for hot water) and packed my things up again before setting off to find the Buddha View Diving Resort agency to pick up my ticket and get ready for the journey to Koh Tao.Around 8:30 that night, myself and two other people were escorted to the bus stop and then waited around for another 30-40 minutes before we actually boarded it. My seat was on the top deck (it was a double-decker) and right at the front. I'm glad that I brought my zip-up hoodie with me on the bus...the air conditioning was cranked up and it was actually freezing inside the bus for most of the ride. I tried to get some sleep but found it to be futile. I instead tried watching the movie they had chosen to play on the TV that night but also found it difficult to watch. It was called 'Speed Racer' and it must've been one of those Nickelodeon/Disney whatever ventures because it was just terrible. It was about this futuristic car racer guy named Speed. His last name was Racer. It looked like one of those movies people come up with while high on acid and cheap Chinese take-out. It was seriously painful to watch.Very early (around 5:30 AM) the bus made it to Chumporn. There we waited for some 20 minutes before being allowed to board the Lomprayah ferry. I would be another 2-3 hours before making it to Koh Tao.At the pier on Koh Tao I was greeted by a Buddha View taxi driver. He was holding up a sign with my name and two others on it. We loaded up onto the taxi and then were taken to the BV resort in Chalok (the south-west side of the island). I showed up and was dismayed to find out that someone I had relied on to set up accommodation for me hadn't done so. It was then left up to me to find my own accommodation. With some tips and advice I was able to find a place for 8000 baht a month (which I found extremely expensive). My better judgment clouded by fatigue and hunger, I just settled on it and would look for another place after I was all rested up. There wouldn't be much rest for me as the Rescue Diver course was scheduled to start that same day at 1 PM. I had just enough time to dump my belongings off in my new room and grab some lunch before grabbing my books and beginning the course.Around 5 PM we were finally all let out of class and I just grabbed some food, went up to my room, showered and then passed out for the evening.

Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India

I woke up and went in search of a place where I could take some passport/visa size photos. It seemed like nothing would opening up until 10-11 AM. I went to an internet cafe nearby and then went to Blue Sky for some breakfast. Had some corn flakes with fruit (it wasn't very yummy) and ginger/honey/lemon tea. It had rained rather heavily all night long (being next to a door that didn't shut/close very well I knew this for a fact) and it was still a bit of rain action happening. I flagged down a cab after breakfast and asked him to take me to the Thai Consulate. While in the cab I witnessed a downpour of epic proportions. It was raining SO hard! The street we were driving on was flooded in minutes and had turned into a rapid flowing river. The driver detoured and took another road. As quickly as it came, it disappeared. We finished the drive without much incident. After I got to the consulate I walked around a bit trying to find a place to get some photos taken. After some 30 minutes of walking around and getting sent in many different directions by the locals...I was feeling pretty frazzled and unhappy. I began to think that India just didn't have any photo studios/shops around. FINALLY...after some dumb luck...I stumbled upon a place. The man taking the picture was rather incompetent. He originally wanted to take the picture with the green background from some random wall. I told him that it needed to be white. He then taped some white sheets of paper behind me. Then he was taking the picture at an angle. I told him that it needed to be from straight on. Then he was zooming in to my face too much and I had to tell him to include the top half of my shoulders. FINALLY...after what seemed an eternity...I was able to get my pictures printed and ran back to the Thai Consulate. I was worried about the time. It was almost 11:30 by then and I knew that they would be closing at 12-noon for lunch. I made it there and asked the man behind the counter if there would be any way to get a visa done on the same day. He asked me when my flight was and I told him. He asked to see my e-ticked and I showed him. He asked to see my passport and I gave it to him. He took one look at my Brazilian passport and said that I didn't need a visa. He showed me a special list of exceptions and Brazil was on this list (only 3 countries long) of passports that received 90-day visas to Thailand upon arrival. I was ecstatic and quite relieved. I didn't think that I was going to be able to get a visa done in time and was going to have to go in with my Canadian passport...which would only get me 30 days' worth. I shook the man's hand and thanked him and then went back to the guesthouse. The rain had started up again, quite seriously. Turns out that there was a cyclone raging over Kolkata that day (it has started the day before). I resumed my reading of Shantaram and just listened as the weather raged on outside. Some trees had been knocked over and some rooves had lost their shingles. The guesthouse was also suffering from some flooding and leaky everythings. My little bed in the corner stayed nice and dry though...so I had no problems. I had begun chatting up this girl (the only other one in the dorm) named Aimee. She was from England and we were swapping India stories for a bit. We decided to go get some dinner at Blue Sky (hey, the food was cheap and good). We both had noodle dishes. She went back to the guesthouse and I went to the internet cafe one last time to jot down some addresses and phone numbers I was going to be needing in Thailand. After all was settled I went back and began packing away my belongings. I was such a pro at packing that it only took me 15 minutes to get all travel-ready. I had been thinking of heading over to the airport around 10:30 and left earlier instead. The weather was bad and I didn't know if the taxi driver was going to need to make any detours. I was also worried that there wouldn't be any taxis around later on. People in India just seemed to go to bed with the chickens (as in...early in the night). I didn't want to take the risk. I stopped the first cab and asked him how much to the airport. He said RS$600. I just about had a heart attack. I was like...'are you kidding'? He said that it was the 'night price' and 'bad weather price'. I replied that I thought it was a 'bullshit price'. I left to ask other cabs. After stopping to talk to some 10 taxis...I FINALLY found one that was willing to do it for RS$300. It was still more than what I thought it was worth...but I settled because I was just annoyed with the haggling and didn't want to leave India on a sour note. What ended up happening was the driver...who didn't speak much English...asking me for RS$350 because of some reason of another and kept saying 'night, night' over and over. I was so annoyed. I informed him that we had settled on RS$300 and that was all he would be getting. He kept saying 'sorry, no English'. I replied with 'sorry, no Hindi'. The little prick even dropped me off at the wrong terminal (domestic departures) and I had to walk 10 minutes to get to the international departures. So much for not leaving India on a sour note. I settled in at the airport and resumed my reading of Shantaram. Around 12:30 AM they called my flight to go in for security check. The guys there took offense with either me of my bag...because they had me open it and they rummaged through it looking for something or other. After much searching they were finally satisfied and let me through. I checked in...the lady that checked me in was one surly bitch. Every question I asked was ignored. Lots of cranky people at the Thai Airways counter in Kolkata...I'll tell you that. Boarded the flight...had a decent meal and landed in bangkok at 6:10 AM. End of India chapter. Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India

Having spent most of my 15.5 hour train ride from Varanasi sleeping on the train...I felt quite rested upon my arrival in Kolkata. At the train station's information desk I stopped to ask which was the pre-paid taxi booth was. I lined up and waited for some 20 minutes (it was quite the busy day). I paid RS$65 for my trip to Sudder Street (the backpacker hotel/guesthouse street). I noticed that it wasn't as hot in Kolkata as I had been expecting. It was an overcast day and as a result the temperature was much lower than normal. It was nice. Once I got off I was ambushed by this one guy who tried shoving his business card in my face. Some hotel nearby or something. I didn't appreciate him being in my face the moment I got off the taxi. I asked him which was the Salvation Army was and he told me it was 'closed'. I highly doubted that he was being honest. I stopped and asked some other people...who then also told me it was closed and tried to get me to go to some other hotel with them. ARRGH! I finally gave up on the Salvation Army (I couldn't trust the locals) and just walked into a few hotels/guesthouses on my own to find out the prices. There was some ridiculously expensive and shitty stuff happening in Kolkata. I was shown some single rooms that were much worse than the one I had in Varanasi and 2-3 times the price. Other places just wanted RS$500 and I was not going to spend that much on a room just for myself. After some more searching I found Center Point Guesthouse. It was just around the corner from the busy Sudder St. and they had dorm rooms available for RS$100 a night. I took a bed next to the breezy door and began the process of unpacking my basic necessities and getting myself showered. After the shower my next priority became food. I was feeling pretty hungry and just wandered around a bit looking for a decent place to eat. Walked past some bazaars and then stopped to ask a pair of foreigners if they knew a good place to eat breakfast. They mentioned that they had just eaten at the Blue Sky cafe. It wasn't too far from where we were so I went there and had a nice sandwich and a Pepsi (I was in desperate need of sugar). After breakfast I went to an internet cafe to check mail, Facebook and other stuff. Exhausted...I returned to the guesthouse and had a nice 2 hour nap. I woke up and went to check out some more bazaars (it has begun raining intermittently). I found this kid selling some books on the street and purchased 'Shantaram'. It seemed that everyone was reading that book (about an Australian who had escaped from jail and moved to India to work in the mob) and it had received rave reviews from everyone I had talked to about it. I talked the kid down to RS$200 (Annina, the Swiss girl had purchased hers for RS$400). I checked to make sure that it was in English and that the pages were all in order (hey, this IS India we're talking about here. The land of foreigner rip-offs). I made it back to the guesthouse and began to read. Some 4 hours later I was finally driven by hunger to put the book down and go find some food. I stopped at a bakery called Kathleen's Creations and popped in to have a look. There were some super delicious looking pastries and cakes/desserts. For the first time since I had stepped foot in India...I felt safe about ordering something to eat that contained meat. I ordered a chicken tikka patty, a Limca and a chocolate rum ball. All for just RS$32. I was impressed....by both the price and the taste. It was a rather delicious meal indeed. It had started to rain quite heavily and so I just scampered back to the guesthouse and resumed my book reading. I set my alarm for the next day. I wanted to get up early and go to the Thai Consulate and get a visa sorted out for myself. Emil had told me that they were able to get a 60-day one free of charge...but that it had taken them one full day to get it. I didn't have a full day. My flight would be leaving at 2 AM on Tuesday. At any rate....I kept reading until I was too tired to continued and then turned in for the night.
