Interesting start being shunted to a different hostel to the one we
booked - the new one hadn't been opened yet and really wasn't ready for
it. the owners went on a shopping spree to get it up to scatch. only a
few of us the first night which meant that we made some really gd
friends.

rome itself is huge and hard to absorb, especially being as travel
weary as we are. still it does have the best gelati we've ever tasted
(we see ourselves as experts now)..

Naples, Italy

A little disappointed with Naples - went expecting a nice city
encircling a bay and in the shadow of a looming Mt. Vesuvius. That all
is kind of true but unless you're right on the waterfront it is
impossible to see sea or volcano from almost any other point in the
city. Within Naples you are engulfed by the traffic which seems to
impose more than any other Italian city we visited. Everytime you cross
the street your life is in someone else hands as they zoom around
either side of you. Pompeii on the other hand was amazing. The size of
that place beggars belief.

Had been eating Italian for a while so decided to go for chinese one
night. Amazingly enough mains at this really nice restaurant were
around 2-3 euros - and it was empty every night! We get the feeling
that Italians NEVER eat anything but Italian.

Nicest area we visited in Italy. had some trouble finding accomodation
on the weekend and big crowds on the sat - had a 3hr wait to get into
the Uffizi gallery --- no-one here has heard of off-peak.

went here only really because it was the one place in italy we could
get a budget flight to. were expecting milan to be horrendously
expensive but (apart from the 15,000euro dresses in the store windows)
didn't find it any more pricy than other italian cities we subsequently
visited.Da Vinici's 'the last supper' was a huge highlight.

got dropped off by the bus in a deserted terminal at 4 in the morning.
Luckily, us and the other disorientated tourists managed to find a late
night diner still open and drink coffee until sunup. athens itself was
well worth the short visit. expecting an ugly polluted city (from all
the stories we had heard) we were surprised to find it clean and
actually really pretty. all the main sites are easily within walking
distance and you can cover them within 2-3 days. Only drawback was
prices, which seem to have shot up since the lonely planet had last
been there.

amazingly beautiful place. able to catch up again with Skyler and
Anika. great week until we both got sick with only a couple of days to
go - able to postpone our 18hr bus ride which was lucky - the absence
of a toilet on the bus could have been a problem :)
