Well, it looks like we are taking the first steps on our journey just by starting this travel blog!
We are Allison, Gustavo, Ariel (13) and Mateo (8), and this is a trip that we have dreamed of doing for years. It is hard to believe that -- due to the right combination of circumstances at the right time -- it is actually beginning to come true! Our new (to us) family member had been sitting in our backyard until last week, when we decided that spring was here (finally) and that it was time to get the plates on! Now we have tons of planning to do to get ready to take it (or more accurately, for it to take us) on a long trip through the US, Mexico, Central and South America to our final destination: Punta del Diablo, Uruguay. We have alot to do, including storing, selling/giving away and shipping our belongings, preparing the vehicle, and collecting important spare parts and a tool kit (not to mention pesky little things like making money, etc.)
This is the beginning of a pretty exciting adventure...here we go.....

Hola a todos, supongo que si estan leyendo esto ya saben que estamos preparando para manejar en un volkswagen westfalia desde Hamilton, Canada hasta Punta del Diablo!! A veces me va a tocar a mi, escribir en espanol (y encima no encuentro los tildes de *&%!) y por eso me van a tener que aguantar muchas faltas de ortografia, etcetera. Pero, como dicen - es lo que hay valor!
Bueno, ya estamos en la parte preparativa: mandando algunas cosas que queremos tener en PDD a Uruguay, regalando otras cosas por alli, y Mateo esta muy emocionado porque va hacer un enorme venta de "garage sale" en frente de la casa (si es que algun dia sale el sol...)
Tambien tenemos que hacer un monton de cosas para preparar la kombi para un viaje asi. Ya encontramos un mecanico en Toronto que parece muy bueno, y nos va decir que hacer, que repuestas tendriamos que llevar, los herramientos mas importantes, etc. Tambien esta el pequenio inconveniente de tratar de hacer $ para poder pagar un viaje asi, y algunas deudas que nos quedan aca, antes de salir. Pero, si todo sale bien, pensamos salir en julio para poder llegar en diciembre a Uruguay (viva la primavera!!)

After Gustavo's appointment at the Juravinski Cancer Centre here in Hamilton, we were very relieved to hear that the oncologist thinks that it is very unlikely that the spots on his liver and lung are cancer-related, seeing as how his lymph nodes were clear. Apparently all signs point to it having been a stage one cancer contained to the testicle that they removed. He still has to undergo surveillance to make sure that these spots do not grow (another scan in late August/early September), but the most likely thing is that they are benign hemangiomas. The tumour was a strange one, apparently, so they thought that he may have needed some radiation, just in case, but then finally decided that he does not at this point. So, we are breathing a big, audible sigh of relief now!
He is going for another CT scan next week to make sure everything is okay, and then we will be able to start thinking about planning our trip again....
By way of celebration, we decided to spend a few days at Killbear Provincial Park on Georgian Bay, just north of Parry Sound.
The only problem now is that our camera broke :-(
so we don't have any evidence of the really gniess rock formations at the park, or proof that Ariel and Mateo jumped off a cliff and swam to shore....

update: Thanks to Carla and Mariano, who were at Killbear with us, we now have photo evidence of Killbear.

Well, another summer is almost over and school is upon us once again. The kids and I will be starting classes next week, so we decided that another trip to Pinery was in order! Whenever we are missing our place in Punta del Diablo, we can almost fool ourselves into thinking we are there when the conditions are right and the wind comes in from the west, creating huge (ok, maybe not *huge*, but it IS a lake so come on....) waves for the kids to frolic in, and the sound can be heard from the campground all night. The combination of pine trees and fine white sand dunes make it so that -- it weren't for the lack of salt in the air -- the combination of sun and wind would make you swear you were on the south Atlantic coast. But you also get the spectacular sunsets in the West as a bonus.....
