Yosemite National Park, California, United States

We're in California!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After a long, 2-day drive through desolate Nevada, we reached the Welcome to California sign! Soon after, we pitched our tent in Lee Irving, the gateway to Yosemite and then toured Mono Lake. Mono Lake is known in environmental circles because the City of LA tried to purchase land and water rights to the lake for municipal use (that what happens when a large city is built on the desert!! LA is known for its 'water grabbing'). The CA Supreme Court held that LA had to reduce its consumption of the water and restore Mono Lake to previous levels. Some of the pictures we took of the lake's deposits may not be visible in 10 years, as the lake slowly rises back to its normal level.

The next morning, we drive through the alpine pass into Yosemite National Park.

We also hiked Yosemite's Upper Falls. The hike was strenuous and worth every switchback. At the top we took our time viewing all of the vistas of the valley. We were pleasantly exhausted after it all.
Moab, Utah, United States

Jackie and Josh convinced us to extend our roadtrip and discover Moab Utah for a day. This was well worth the detour. Moab is amazing and beautiful desert and canyonland. Edward Abbey wrote about this part of the U.S. in a book I read years ago named 'Desert Solitaire.'

We camped a little bit outside town in a beautiful campsite in the canyon. The canyon floor was all sand and large gusts of canyon wind greeted us at 5AM. It was quite a beautiful and exciting experience and fortunately our tent held up well.

The following day we hiked in Arches National Park, home of thousands of natural arches created by underlying salt beds, wind and erosion. We hiked the 'Dark Angel' 5 mile hike, crossing rock bridges, various arches and finally a rock pinnacle. I am really glad that Josh recommended this hike.

Moab, the city itself, was full of fantastic art galleries and fun adventure outfitter stores. We ate delicious homemade pasta at 'Pasta Jay's.' We also met a few people that came to Moab for vacation and never left. After two days there, I can see why.

Next stop: Mono Lake and Yosemite National Park
Mitchell, South Dakota, United States

We took a little detour and saw the famous Corn Palace of Mitchell, South Dakota. I'd like to say that it rocked my world, but you know how corny roadside attractions are (no pun intended).....they only rock the world of those that have been driving through the flatness of South Dakota for hours on end.

On the other hand, the Badlands did rock our world. They were gorgeous and well worth the hour detour it took to do the 'Badlands Loop.' A welcome change to the otherwise flat landscape of South Dakota.

Forward ho...to Colorado......
The smell of Lake Nagawicka and the feeling of being at my parent's house refreshed me though. I haven't done that since Duck Hunt.

Ha! Surprisingly, my mother was the best sharpshooter with a score of 19 out of 20 despite my dad's years of deer hunting experience.

Our wonderful visit in Wisconsin ended too soon and with a bit of car trouble (already)! No worries, though - it was just a loose battery terminal. Something we'll fix in our next stop - Minnesota.
Delhi, India

We've returned to Delhi! For my last day in India, Adam's co-worker, Jitin, took us on a tour of Old Delhi. It was great to see Delhi through the eyes of a local. We toured through the very confusing and windy streets of Old Delhi's markets, purchasing treasures and tasting delicious street food along the way. It's amazing the chaotic retrofitting that Old Delhi has gone through to bring its old structures into the 20th century. Electrical and telephone wires are strung precariously on the front of every building. Adam and I thought we had seen crowded streets in Jodhpur, but those pale in comparison to this area of Delhi. People form one moving mass down the street. What a spectacular final day in India!

As a treat, Adam and I dined at the Imperial Hotel's Spice Route restaurant and had one of the best meals we've had in India. Delicious Asian fusion food.

I barely made my international flight home, but all ends well as I am safely back home. It's all a bit of a culture shock: there is toilet paper in bathrooms, left-over Christmas and New Years decorations strung about, traffic that stays in proper lanes, supermarkets with a plethora of brands to choose from, the cleanliness of our apartment, no litter or trash on the streets, no beggars and blatant poverty, no vibrant and colorful clothing, no painted trucks or buildings....
