    ... and a white picket gate that opens on the the cliff path, and directly in front - the Edge. From our porch we can hear waves breaking on the rocks below, and the squawk of sea birds. But not seabirds as we imagine them, white gulls. In Varkala, black crows share the sky with sea eagles that soar and swoop along the edge of the precipice.

    Just outside the Bamboo Village, along the path, a temporary community of souvenir shops, restaurants and health spas exists ...

    ... ground too and I asked him questions I probably didn't want to know the answer to such as had he ever crashed. He insisted that he never had, not even when he was training, because you learn slowly. Goooood to know. Towards the end he flew us over North Cliff where we glided over the cafes and restaurants that I frequent before he swung over the helipad again in tight circles my stomach ...

    ... to see what I missed. The next day we went on a fantastic backwaters tour which is what the state of Kerala is famous for. The guide really made the difference as his English was fantastic, he was a former teacher and we learned a lot from him. We were punted down one of the narrow canals on a small canoe enjoying the peace and quiet that is a world away from the rest of India.
