... office, the first secondary school in Argentina and the original first house built in the town. We were intending to have a typical Welsh tea and went to three old places that did them, unfortunately they were all full of tourists and so we did not bother in the end. No real hardship since neither of us drinks tea!

12th – It is very windy once again and since the campsite is quite well sheltered we have decide to stay for another couple of days just resting.

Half Million Penguins at Punto Tumbo Colony

... on getting where they need to go- envision a trail with several packs of tourists stopping to wait for penguins to cross the path. I was ignorant in thinking that penguins just lived in snowy, icy places (from movies and cartoons and such). These penguins live in fairly warm places and build nests in the ground. They will be here in Argentina until April and then will head to ...

Welcome to Argentina

... the countryside saying prayers. Somehow, I quickly regained an innocent and nonchelant composure. The car then slowed and came to a halt directly in front of the bike. In itself, this is not unusual as people occasionally stop to ask for directions believing a cyclist will know exactly where every village, waterfall and turn-off within two hundred kilometres is located. It's only when they drive off, I wonder why they ...

Patagonie, Puerto Madryn

Penguins!!!! - Punto Tombo

... better seats than the last time, but the anxiety from our last experience still surfaced quite quickly. We crawled into the tiny seats and picked up the rest of the the people for the tour before heading towards Punto Tombo. We were told by our guide that we would be stopping at the dolphin watching expedition first. I have seen dolphins in the wild before, but we were told that these dolphins (Commerson Dolphins) were specific to only this area of the world. Both Siobhan and I were ...

Our Last Look Around Ushuaia

This evening we fly to Trelew and then head to Gaiman - A small town that retains it´s Welsh heritage. We spend the day looking around Ushuaia, including a couple of museums. We took a taxi to the base of the chairlift, which could have taken us to up the mountain with great views over Ushuaia and the beagle channel - except nobody told us it was closed for maintenance. There were serious trekkers ...

Welsh tea cakes

... tasted pretty good. Later we meet a Welsh guy: Phill, a teacher travelling through South America. He finds the whole Trelew and Gaiman Welsh experience tacky, distasteful and outdated. Its a bit like the image problems Scotland suffered from 50 years ago: all tartan and shortbread. Scotland and Wales are not like that anymore. The tea rooms of Gaiman are theme-parks celebrating life in Wales in a time long gone. Well worth visiting as long as you´re not Welsh.

We felt welcome and immediately comfortable. The view from our bedroom window of the lower Andes made us want to stay there forever. We went out for some lunch and only in small-town Argentina would all restaurants and ...
