... city. Awesome architecture and canals winding around the city, as I took tons of pictures as always and just enjoyed the city.
Apparently Brugges had a movie made recently with it as a location; I'll have to check it out sometime. The main "art" piece I saw was a Madonna with Child from -the- Michaelangelo from Italy. It was quit nice, as were the countless other paintings and sculptures I saw in that ...
... soldier'. Again, it was pretty sobering, seeing all these graves.
We managed to all get completely soaked today, and it was freezing cold and windy as well, so it wasn't particularly comfortable. After that, it was back to Calais, stopping at one more of the massive French hypermarkets for a few souvenir pieces of food, then back onto the ferry back to Dover.
So, that was the Crumball Rally over! We did ...
... attention to detail.
Back on the road, we headed further north and crossed over the border in Luxembourg. We stopped briefly at some motorway services, but as we were running short for time we didn't get the chance to stop in Luxembourg city. Going through one village we did see a pretty cool house on top of an outcrop of rocks, which looked great all lit up, but it was hard to get a shot which did it justice.
After crossing over into Belgium we stopped for gas, then ...
... went to as well (hey, it was raining the whole time). This was considerably better than the fry museum (although not as funny) and we got a demonstration on how they make the famous Belgian Prailines.
Other than that, our 3 days in Brugge were filled with more choclate, beer, and fries (and one waffle) and admiring what the cute little town has to offer. Now we're off to Amsterdam... wish us luck!
... went for a wander around the Beguinage and the little streets of the city before stopping for lunch in a restaurant on the main square, which was really nice and served local traditional food which was really great.
We wanted to go up the clock-tower but the queue was far too long and we decided that we could go back another day during the week when there weren't so many tourists!
The Christmas market had just started in Bruges so we spent quite a while wandering ...
We went to Ypres on the suggestion of my dad. Ypres is located in Flanders and was a central battle ground during WWI. The town of Ypres seemed to be right in the midst of the fight and was almost completely destroyed in bombings and fires. It is also in this area that the battles of Pashchendale took place. It was one of the most deadly and greusomome places to fight in WWI and many young Canadians lost their lives there.
We got a ...
... The Grote Markt (Big Town Square) was huge and surrounded by cafes and gorgeous buildings such as the city hall. Many cities we've been to have similar squares with some being much more exceptional then others, Brugge included. We walked around the city, passing over the canals and peering into the churches. We went into the Beguinage in the city which was once owned by the Benguines who you could say were the first feminists. Their ...
Brugge, West Flanders, Belgium ktchris... place where we enjoyed relaxing at night.
The highlights for me were the pubs and beer cafes we found thanks to the map where I attempted to try as many different beers as possible. After 3 days I had managed quite a few.The pubs included tiny local bars hidden in alleyways and pubs boasting the number of beersthey had available. One in particular held the guinness record a few years ago at around 2000 types but today ...
We finally took the time to go to the Belgian coast. We had gotten within 60 kms of it by visiting other towns such as Ghent and Brugges, but hadn't gone the extra distance to see the coast. We decided that we would overnight there on Easter weekend. We arrived early afternoon and drove through Oostend which is a cute costal town with a nice shoreline, a casino and cute shops and restaurants ...
Ichtegem, West Flanders, Belgium pucketts... time. We headed home to the hostel and got a tasty meal at the hostel's restaurant. The third day was, laundry day!!! Not much done here, just clean clothing, and a good nights rest. Then our 4 hour ride to Amsterdam!
