Quamran - The site of the Dead Sea Scrolls

What a hot and dry day. There we were in Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in a cave by young sheperds . More information can be found here http://www.centuryone.com/25dssfacts.ht ml and http://www.bibleplaces.com/qumrancaves. htm. The fact that manuscripts of the Old Testment were found dating to a 1000 years ago is mind boggling. To think people wandered through this vast dry land. Rachie and I left Mom and Dad at a shaded area since the heat was pretty intense. Well... when...

Church of the Visitation - A steep climb

This was a test for Mom and Dad. The Church of the Visitation was on the hillside of Ein Kerem and it was a steep climb. The bus couldn't even drive through the town. So we disembarked the bus, walked through the town and up we went. Dad already had this look of dread on his face but Brother Carmelo accompanied the older members and prayed the rosary as we made the climb. There were several rest stops but we all made it. After succeeding that climb Dad knew he could do the rest of the pilgrim...

Garden tomb and Mt. of Olives

... Moslem cemetery at the base of the wall. I understood that the cemetery had been placed here so that it would become a filthy place for the Jews who were expecting the Messiah on the Mount of Olives but this cemetery was something else. Full of trash, broken bottles, signs all over of recent trash fires. It surprised me that Muslims would so desecrate their own cemetery. Maybe there is more to this story than I know or ...

Shopping for Shabbat: The Mahane Yehuda market

In Jerusalem, most Jews strictly observe Shabbat (day of rest) and that means there are a lot of restrictions (no driving, turning off and on lights, no exchange of money, ...) that begin at sundown. So, on Friday afternoons Jews frantically shop for Shabbat and the Mahane Yehuda Markets is quite a spectacle. Just look at the video and pics and you'll get the idea. It was really fun and exciting. We stopped inside the Shuq to eat at a tiny and busy Iraqi restaurant.

Dead Sea

... that put that famous Dead Sea black mud all over your body while you relax. I didn't try it myself as I couldn't be bothered to rinse it off afterwards, not to mention that no other woman did... only this Chinese guy...and it didn't look very relaxing with 3 people over his head...Anyways, make sure you get your flip flops with you as going into the sea can prove tricky with the salt creating sharp crystals rather unpleasant to the foot, from there inwards though it ...
