... towers, all of which make for a very picturesque skyline. We did the recommended walk, which took us past the main features. The castle is very impressive. In the information pamphlet it says: "Whoever comes to Ghent without visiting this castle, built in 1180, deserves thumbscrews, a stay in the dungeons or even the guillotine, which was last used in 1861." So we went in, but neither of us has the stomach for dwelling ...

It was currently allowing water to leave the protected zone and flow back to the sea, but this was creating lots of currents and waves. ... frites and a Flemmish fish stew (shrimp, salmon, potatoes, white fish in a white wine cream sauce). It was the perfect meal after a day of travel! After the sun went down, the DJs emerged in the different town squares: dance, hip hop and a wickedly funky lounge jazz vibe. The streets were packed with people dancing, chillin' and drinking beer (did you know that Belgium has over 1000 different varieties!). We headed home at a reasonable hour to get ready for our adventure-packed day ...

... of old Brugge, and again were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the museum.

Also on our walk we watched two bridges open, one to let larger boats move around the perimeter of central Brugge whilst heading to the sea, and the other smaller pedestrian bridge being lifted to let smaller boats move into the internal waterways -quiet fascinating.

We also discovered on the walk ...
