Admans and goobyes to India

... frustrating if the tide is in. We timed our walk so that the tide was out so the walk was super easy and we got to see all kinds of small crabs with big orange claws duck into their holes as we passed by. As with the day we bike rode, it was overcast and rainy and made it hard to see while snorkeling. I saw a few really cool coral but nothing super interesting. The hike to the beach and back was more fun for me than the snorkeling but I'm still glad I got out in ...

Kingfisher - The King of Good Times

... to spend the entirety of the time we'd be in the Andamans, so we just wandered around in the vicinity of some hotel we got a day room at called the Holiday Resort (7000 Rupees, nothing to write home about but a decent deal) and then hired a tuk-tuk to take us on a little trip around Port Blair. The driver spoke pretty limited English, but he seemed to feel that it was important to point out everything we were passing so we'd know what Port Blair had going on. So, as we drove ...

... going on. I hung out mostly with the instructors and other guests that were diving there. I'm back in Chennai for a few hours and tonight I'm taking the night train to Cochin which is on the west coast. I hope you are doing well and getting ready for the holiday season. This will be my first winter without snow and freezing temperatures...I'll try not to rub it in too much :) Hope to hear from you soon... peace, Jen

NELSON MANDELA - THE ANDAMAN CONNECTION

... not permit him. Mandela recognized the books as his own and Nolitha too. When asked why he kept the picture, Mandela said he saw in the exuberance of the woman a "celebration of life". What could have been on Mandela's mind when on December 26, 2004, a couple of months after the rediscovery of the photo, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands were devastated by the tsunami?

... the bus that are more threatening with their undiluted curiosity, staring and gesticulating animatedly. Some of them even whip out their cameras and start clicking away. One goes to the extent of pulling open her window and nearly throws some food item to the poor, non-plussed Jarawa when the guide yells at her. By now, the bus is awake and we are approaching the end of the Jarawa reserve. Another 90mts into the ride, at 7.30, we have reached Baratang ...

The first day in the Andamans

... the waters, stretching to a turquoise blue to as far as the eye could see - the vision marred, of course, by the odd verdant island or a passing cruiser. Which is what we had seen so far. Quite naturally, then, the sight of Corbyn Cove and its beautiful sandy beach told us that the Andaman experience would be all about promises kept, and exceeded. Just 7kms to the south of Port Blair, Corbyn Cove is a beautiful sandy curve that is fringed by lazily swinging ...

Two Englishmen on English Island

... that took two whole days to get back to normal.

On the first visit to English Island we had seen two dogs running on the beach before we landed. We asked if there were people there as well but were told that the dogs had been abandoned to die. As we landed the dogs ran towards us, overjoyed at our arrival. It was a ***** and her puppy, a lop-eared black and white dog that was cartoon-cute. Both dogs were emaciated and were drinking seawater and we guessed that the puppy ...

... in a threefold increase in Indian numbers (to approx. 300,000) in the last twenty years.

The heavily forested islands are being stripped of their hardwood timber and habitat loss of the endemic animals is alarming. In typical Indian fashion, the development of the islands is being accelerated and the hammers and saws are restless in their efforts to raise an infrastructure for visitors. An international airport is nearing completion and, when ready, it will ...
