India - Bodhgaya

... trains it was the only choice available. In most countries you might expect the train station to be pretty empty at such an early hour in a pretty small city (by India standards) but not so. When I walked outside the main terminal into the night I was greeted by the incredible sight of literally hundreds of bodies huddled up sleeping on the asphalt parking lot in front of the station. There were also dozens upon dozens of wide awake folks milling ...

Buddhas tree

We stopped in Bodhigaya for two reason: the first was to break up the long haul to Darjeeling and second was to see the spot where Buddha attained enlightenment. It was here, 26 centuries ago, that Prince Sidartha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. It also just so happens that Bodhigaya is located in the state of Bihar - one of India’s poorest and most troubled regions. This area is wracked by widespread government corruption, sporadic intercaste ...

Bodh Gaya - Enlightenment

We stopped off and stayed the night in BodhGaya and traveled the next day to Gaya, where Siddhattha Gotama meditated beneath a bodhi tree and attained enlightenment, to become Lord Buddha.

It's a beautiful place where we sat for just one afternoon and watched devoted Buddhists gather to meditate at the sacred spot under the grand old tree. Neither Mish or myself are Buddhist, but it didn't detract from our experience and we took pleasure ...

Bodh Gaya

April 20, 2009 6th installment In order to beat the heat and the crowds we walk to the main temple at 6:30 in the AM. It is already getting light and the air is around 70 degrees. We quickly passed the gauntlet of beggars and hawkers, most of which are just stirring awake. Inside the temple we pay our 20 rupee camera fee (about 40 cents) and enter the grounds. After saying no to one young guide we were approached by another and decided to pay his fee ...

Varanasi to Bodh Gaya

April 19th 5th installment Today we have another great breakfast at the hotel restaurant. We like the buffet breakfast with the opportunity to choose either European style food or Indian food. We usually go for the exotic Indian, although we are still learning the names and flavors. Returned to the room and packed our things (getting more difficult to do as we are accumulating), preparing for the trip to Bodagaya. At 10 am the guides arrive and we ...

Introduction to India (proper)

5th April: Got to Bodhgaya after about 45mins in the rickshaw (3-wheeled taxi powered by lawnmower engine) and arrived at the deep guest house which proved the lonely planet (or the book) right in that the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and the room was pretty nice as well, even had a TV. Unfortunately the power was prone to switching off occasionally but this we could live with. At last an India we could get on board with! After pancakes and a nap (about ...

... better we went out on a boat to see the daily Puja, which is some ceremony that I am not exactly sure what for, but is performed every morning and night. We also watched the burning bodies on the Ghats for the first time which was pretty crazy, I thought I would react more but it just seemed normal. Well when I saw the burning feet sticking out of the fire it was pretty wierd, but we got used to seeing it everyday. We also did a sunrise boat ride which was really nice watching ...

Buddha's place of enlightenment

After Varanasi we went to Bodhgaya - which was a very nice place. We met up with Tumu - who is a friend of Mark - a friend who lives in Colorado - that was quite a coincidence. The mahabodhi temple is an amazing structure as you can see from the photos and it was very nice to walk around. When we first arrived at the temple who did I see but Dzigar Kongtrul and many of his ...
