First day in Dubai

... then directed to follow our driver outside.....OMG.....like walking into an oven at 200 degrees, it was just past 1am and 39 degrees. Boarded our Tarago like van...thank god it was air conditioned. Drove around 20 mins to our hotel Howard Johnson Bur Dubai. In the old part of Dubai (Bur Dubai) Got into our rooms..unfortunately different floors, thank god there was lovely air conditioning! Unpacked then bed....ahhhh Got up showered dressed, M & I went to brekky around ...

The side entrance with its heavy bronze and glass double doors – handles set with AB Swarovski Rivoli crystals !!!! - is none the less magnificent !

Shehnaaz asks that we stick together as a group so she can show us around this magnificent hotel which is a replica of the King’s former palace … apparently he has a new one now … wonder what ...

... to make the ATM give us any money at the airport, and all we had was a $50 NZ note. So he took that and gave Allan some change which sounded reasonable. We were pretty tired so just wanted to pay him and be done with it.

We couldn't check into the hotel at that time which was 7am, so left bags there and took the train to what we thought was an open park. Turned out it was fenced off with a long queue to get in. We didn't quite work ...

... that's reserved for the likes of Tom Cruise when filming Mission Impossible or for base jumpers, but you do get to go up about two thirds of the way to the 124th floor. Well you actually go up to the 125th floor, then get another elevator to go back down a level, we presume that this was a planning oversight! ... unprepared and hadn't researched much. We got the the Marina and thought we would walk down to and around the Palms area. Unfortunately, the map wasn't exactly to scale and after walking for 3hrs in flip flops, our feet were throbbing and blistered. Every time we thought we were getting close to the Atlantis Hotel, our final destination, we would turn a corner only to discover it was still miles away.
