Karni Mata ("Rat Temple") of Deshnok *video*

View video of Karni Mata ("Rat Temple") of Deshnok in Rajasthan

Many animals in India are considered sacred. At Deshnok’s Karni Marta Rat Temple, I had to walk barefoot over sacred rat pee and sacred rat poop which at the time was the only
option that allowed me to witness millions of rats take free reign over
an entire temple (I know what ...

Rats!

... beggars, touts, or salesmen (to think!!)! After enjoying the evening and the fresh food, the next day we made our way to Deshnoke, home of Karni Mata, the Rat Temple. Here the rat is venerated, due to an old story stating that the Kabas (legion rats) carry the souls of future children of the goddess Durga, who inhabited the town long ago. Rats are everywhere here, being fed yogurt, rice ...

... whilst Chrissy watched it all being prepared in the kitchen on the reception CCTV. The next morning we left the hotel at 9am for the three hour drive to Mandawa. Later that day I realised I had somehow left behind the comms cable that connects our phone to a PC. I hadn't uploaded any blog for a while (we hadn't been sat still for long enough!) so there were quite a few entries sat on the phone. Now I had to find a cable before I could empty the phone. Bugger!

... decided to tuck into it himself. I reminded him of all the yellow stuff on the floor left for the rats. I should have stopped him before but was too busy laughing. On our last day we went to the camel breeding farm, the biggest in Asia. We didn't buy one in the end but found a few suitable girlfriends for Paul especially the ones with the long eyelashes. After the camel breeding farm we had to get our overnight train to Delhi.

DAY 8 &9 - made it alive

... four wheel driving. We arrived in Bikaner and were greeted by an army of tuk tuks. We were taken to our hotel - Hanasar Haveli which was also a resotred haveli although it was very differant, much larger, mre like a hotel. Our room was realy really nice, we had a window seat and everything...even a personal balcony...Lou got attacked by pigeons, didnt go back out there again..the struggle of making it through a tiny hip sized window didnt make it any better! We decided we were ...

... night time and we had to crunch our way through dinner, reminiscent of childhood beach picnics, only with sand rice and dhal on the menu instead of sand sandwiches. We were to sleep in the dunes, in sight of a desert village of thatch-roofed mud houses, and its just as well I have few toilet inhibitions as it was nigh on impossible to find a pee spot without the grinning heads of children from said village popping up ...

We seem to be getting a bit stir crazy as we are now addressing one another with a heavily accented , "Hallo my friend," or asking the locals for money. We joked that we should have charged some of the locals at our camp outside of ...

... Jodhpur was a 4 hour drive from the Hindu temple. As we progressed westward the landscape became rougher and more desert like. The area surrounding Jodhpur resembles Arizona, which makes a lot of sense since it is also right near a desert. The drive was long, dusty, bumpy and tiring. Jodhpur city is pretty unimpressive as it is like a typical town. Because we got there so late (~5pm) we could not visit any of the monument as they ...
