... was tried for not moving to a national religion not centered in Rome and denounce Jesus. I then made my way into the Cathedral. Once again so beautiful and had painted walls. They had a high altar pull out (I looked and nothing on the other side). Then behind the altar lay the "remains" of Archbishop Stepinac displayed beautifully. ... in check vs. the ‘ch’ in ‘choose’ are actually different consonants to them. So they were having a lot of trouble with the ‘x’ sound in Chinese, which is another “sh” type sound, but not one they have in Croatian. I kept using words the girl didn’t know when we were trying to come up with a dialogue, which was sort of embarrassing and frustrating on my part. I guess she told some of the other students ...

Hopped on the tram this morning but hopped off at the Opera House (actually called the Croatian National Theater - - because it also does drama and ballet and concerts. But it is the Opera House for ME) to get tickets for Bellini's Norma on the 18th. Unfortunately it is in some weird modern dress but I will get over it - especially as I managed to get the best seats (the 18th is Good Friday...) for the incredible price of $28 each!!! Upper town is more beautiful, with lots of medieval architecture, small, narrow streets, orange and yellow colored buildings and heaps of museums. With summer in our sights, we travelled south through Hungary, hitting our first official border crossing into Croatia, just north of the capital Zagreb. Both keen to get a first stamp on our new passports, we were sorely disappointed when the border patrol waved us through with little more than a second glance at the empty pages sitting between the covers.
