... it was refreshing to eat some Chinese food.

We were told that the best way to explore Santiago is by on a free walking tours (we pay a tip to the guide if we are happy with the tour). The 'Wally' tour had been recommended to us by a number of fellow travellers, where the guides are identified by the red and white striped 'Where's Wally' tshirts.

After a great breakfast of scrambled eggs, fresh fruit salad and fresh pineapple ...

... midnight or 1am here as the majority of the people in our hostel noisily turn in between 4am and 6am. 'That's the problem with these hostels' says Karen dryly 'too many young people having fun!'. As we leave the next day for an early bus to Mendoza at 7am (having gone to bed a bit tipsy at a respectable 1am!) there are still people drinking in the streets who I think were just celebrating the start of the weekend. They certainly know how to throw a party ...

... a remarkable German influence is most visible in the food: Sauerkraut is a popular topping in their hot dogs and lomitos (Chilean burgers). We found a busy Fast Food restaurant, where lomitos are made in perfection - visually as well as regarding taste. Recommended!

... yelling at me to pay her for toilet paper as in other public toilets. As for the quality of toilet paper in hostels....

Which brings me to another beef. Hostel booking sites should add another search filter to their websites. Never mind TV or wifi or cooking facilties. What about identifying those where you can flush your toilet paper down the loo? I would happily pay more for that. But you just have to take your chances:(((

... which followed through on the palate to red berry, spice and racy acidity. This is a big wine and tasty too. The pairing with the slow cooked beef and rich gratin potato worked beautifully.

Act 6 – The finale – worth the wait. Here we had a Bordeaux blend, but one that Bordeaux can no longer give us thanks to the Carmenere, 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Carmenere, 2% Petit Verdot. Wonderful mix of fresh raspberry and cracked ...
