The French Quarter

... hot again so we took things quite leisurely.

Life in Laos is very simple and people are very poor. There’s a strong French influence from their colonial rule and this was seen in the buildings and the availability of baguettes & crepes!

We had a walk about and checked out the local Wat (oh no, not another temple), which was very pretty, and set in a ...

Wat a beautiful town

... up images of haute cuisine in the balmy romantic setting of a luxury establishment, I should confess that in reality our dining spot was rather more makeshift - a flaming wok and coal grill for a kitchen, with plastic tables and chairs set up on the wide expanse of the muddy riverbank under a couple of bare light bulbs. But one of our best meals so far in Laos – what better way to celebrate our 3 month ...

Elephants!!!!!............

... for a bath........ So fantastic! The water is freezing and the elephants are so accurate with their squirting!!! It is probably the only time i have ever wished for a bit of sunshine!! - it was a little chilly when coming out of the water - it is the only time on the whole trip that has been pleasantly cool!!

We then went tubing down the river (basically - river, us sat in a rubber tube). We met a girl who was from New York ...

... It's not a sad thing to spend another day here, but I'm getting itchy feet. I can't wait to drive over those mountains!

We no longer plan to head into Hanoi, as some one told us; "6 Million people, 3 Million scooters and no directions". Sounds horrific. Will probably spend more time in Laos heading south, then into Vietnam.

Anyway, should go and look after my wife. Apparently I said something about 'in sickness and in health' at the wedding. Oh well...
Luang Prabang - Jewel of the Mekong

... definitely a good idea to visit it before the sun rises and the meat and fish start to smell!

We saw lots of Monks wandering around, working and at dusk the sound of chanting and drums fills the air - magical. Paul got very clever with the camera settings and the monk's washing lines.

Luang Prabang is truly charming, we spent a lot of time just sitting, eating great food and drinking Beerlao and watching the world ...

Settling in....

... watch his 8' 3" self try to fit in the public transportation here. Even my knees are a bit sore at the end of a long bus ride form digging into the seat in front of me.
After Luke decided that he was coming we were setting up where we would go/meet. I had already written Pong, the owner of the hostel, and was waiting on a reply. Pong finally wrote back and said that he could use an extra hand. Then I had to decide whether or not I actually wanted to stay and work ...

Recognizing Beauty

The thought of spending the next two days travelling down the Mekong River on a “Slow Boat” with nothing but uncomfortable, straight-backed wooden benches, was anything but intriguing.
But how could anyone not marvel at the river’s large rock outcrops, while observing the sporadic villages, all easily identifiable by the rich green colour of maize that had been planted directly into the sandy riverbank, and of ...

Luang Prabang by speedboat

... a double! How fascinating traveling can be. People that had met only hours ago, we were not only sharing a room, but having lost the straws was sharing a bed also. Somehow this sort of thing never seems an issue when travelling, as we were already firm pals and had been through what seemed like a lot together today. The German girl MUST HAVE HAD MUCH TRUST for her to share a room with guys she had just met. Though she definitely regretted it i ...
