After 6:15am Mass we got on the bus to go to Monte Cassino. The Abbey for the Benedictines is there. We went up the mountain to the Abbey and had a great tour. ... s there from the North Africa campaign. It housed up to 3000 prisoners It is now a museum. We arrived back at the hotel about 4pm and rested till about 6 when Derek and I went shopping. The locals were out strolling as usual. We met the group at 6.30 for an early dinner at a bar as no restaurants open till after 8pm and some wanted an early night for packing. ... was also wonderful with two of the best pastas I have ever tasted. While we were there, a man walked in with trays of fresh Porcini mushrooms that he had just picked. They were on one of our pastas. Some then shared a plate of baked mushrooms that were like small pieces of meat. Throw in the usual ceramic jug of local rough red and an espresso and lunch was complete......again. Derek asked for a caffe Americano (long black) ...

... food was fabulous. We were served by her 11 year old grandson. The Italians are very family oriented and all generations spend lots of time together. We had 14 courses of food and four different drinks. We were all totally stuffed long before the dessert which we managed to force down. There were lots of laughs and a good time was had by all.
