... in the afternoon, dinner and a couple nights of drinking/dancing at night. The perfect vacation to me. It was such a welcome break after a year of work in chilly San Francisco.

After seven nights in Las Galeras - which I highly recommend and would absolutely return to (but next time I would fly in to El Catey airport) - it was finally time to move on. I had an old friend to see in Cabarete, the kite surfing capital of Dominican Republic.

... do with the local culture. It’s a development for North Americans and Europeans and far beyond the means of the local people. The marina was beautiful with some nice boats. The allure escaped us as the water was as filthy here as it was in town. Our guide told us about the excellent local fishing and shrimp. They might be fun to catch but I would not eat anything out of that beautiful sewer. No way.

... people got seriously burnt. My factor 30 was pushed to its limits, but I evaded the burn. That night, there was a beach party in a beach bar for the peace corps with a huge mixture of locals and Americans getting drunk. It was really fun, but I sweated shed loads.

The stairs are an absolute hazard for a climber like Aaron. The stone floors are perfect for splitting a head, the open-air shelves are great for the boy to pull everything to the floor.

In fairness, that is not the Chalet’s fault…they aren’t marketing to children. But these are still facts we have to navigate.
