      ... to explain what is was like as we neared the top, the landscape was grey dust, scattered with chunks of volcanic rock, the sky was filled with smoke and our ears were filled with a sound like the boom of crashing waves!! At the top we peered down into the smoking hole, it was still daylight so the molten lava erupting into the sky didn't look particularly dramatic yet, but as the sunset that changed.

      Back in the relative safety of the bay and the comfort of the cat we are treated to a particularly spectacular display from the volcano during the night and early morning. Bits of lava spitting up high into the air, the ominous red glowing fires against the pitch black night sky, looking something like a malevolent Satan's Red-Chili-Tomato Soup.       In the girls dorm at night time it was very interesting! It was a little hotter than our normal climate as you can imagine. Gabby and myself were in a dorm with no lights so there were torches flashing all around whilst they were trying to continue work and making bracelets still.
